This pattern is for private use only! Please don’t try to sell it and don’t sell finished Wirt. Don’t repost this pattern or a
part of it anywhere without my permission (instead feel free to link to it). I’d also appreciate if you didn’t use this
pattern or a part of it as a base for a doll/pattern you’re going to make for selling. Thank you!
Over the Garden Wall of course belongs to its creators and Cartoon Network.

Materials:
Yarns

• peach (or whatever colour you prefer for skin)

• white
• grey
• dark grey
• black
• dark brown
• dark blue
• red
• a very short length of light blue

Small amount of black thread

Six little yellow buttons or beads

Stuffing
If you want to felt the eyes and the nose like I did, a small amount of white and pink wool for that + a felting needle
and a black marker. (Tip: this requires so little amount of wool that you can easily brush it out of yarn, google it to find
out how.)

2
Abbreviations:
• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet (US), double crochet (UK)
• st = stitch
• ss = slip stitch
• dc = double crochet (US), treble crochet (UK)
• sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
• yoh = yarn over the hook

The number of stitches has been written in brackets at the end of each row.
I usually start by using a magic ring but instead of that you can ch 2 and work the stitches in the first ch.

Please keep in mind English is not my native. And feel free to inform me of any mistakes you may notice in the pattern
and I’ll try to correct them :)

Let’s start!

Head and body

peach yarn, stuff firmly as you go along
Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Row 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Row 3: [sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st] 6 times (18)
Row 4: [sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st] 6 times (24)
Row 5: [sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st] 6 times (30)
Row 6: sc in each st around (30)
Row 7: [sc in the next 4 st, 2 sc in the next st] 6 times (36)
Row 8-13 (6 rounds): sc in each st around (36)
Row 14: [sc in the next 4 st, sc2tog] 6 times (30)
Row 15: sc in each st around (30)
Row 16: [sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog] 6 times (24)
Row 17: [sc in the next 2 st, sc2tog] 6 times (18)
Row 18: [sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times (12)
Row 19: sc2tog 7 times (5)
switch to white yarn
Row 20: 2 sc in each st around (10)
Row 21: [sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st] 5 times (15)
Row 22: sc in each st around (15)
Row 23: [sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st] 5 times (20)
Row 24: sc in each st around (20)
Row 25: [sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st] 5 times (25)

3
Row 26: sc in each st around (25)
switch to grey yarn
Row 27-31 (5 rounds): sc in each st around (25)
Row 32-33 (2 rounds): sc2tog, repeat until the hole is small enough to be sewn shut, finish off and weave in the tail

Ears (make two)

What you’re going to do now is to work the ears right onto the head. Decide a good place for the ear (do one st on
one row of the head, the ear is 5 stitches wide so it’ll take 5 rows of the head). Hook in the right spot (start from the
bottom of the ear and move upward), yoh, pull through, yoh, pull through the loop, do sc in the same spot, do sc in
the next 4 spots too, ch 1, turn, sc in the 3 st, sc2tog, ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 2 st, sc along the upper edge
towards the head, finish off and weave in the tails. Do the other ear onto the other side of the head.

Legs (make two)

grey yarn, leave a long tail at the start and keep it on the outside, you’re going to need it to sew the leg on the body
Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Row 2: [2 sc in the next 2 st, sc in the next st] 2 times (10)
Row 3-14 (12 rounds): sc in each st around (10)
Row 15: 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 9 st (11)
ss, finish off and leave a long tail

4
Socks (make two, one with the last row made in black and one with the last row made in dark grey)
white yarn
Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Row 2-4 (3 rounds): sc in each st around (6)
switch to black/dark grey yarn
Row 5: sc in each st around (6)
ss and finish off, leave a long tail, stuff firmly

Shoes (make two, one in black and one in dark grey)

black/dark grey yarn
Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Row 2: [2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 st] 2 times (8)
Row 3-7 (5 rounds): sc in each st around (8)
finish off, stuff firmly, sew shut and weave in the tail

Sewing together the legs

1. Sew together the sock and the shoe. Weave in the tail.
2. Stuff the leg firmly but leave room for the sock. Put the sock in the leg so that the white part is still showing a
little.
3. Sew a few stitches (with the grey tail) around the leg to attach the sock to it.

Finally sew the legs on the body. The one with a dark grey shoe is the left one (the left from Wirt’s point of view of
course).

5
Arms (make two)
peach yarn
Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Row 2-4 (3 rounds): sc in each st around (6)
switch to white yarn
Row 5-15 (11 rounds): sc in each st around (6)
Finish off and leave a long tail. Stuff the tip of the arm firmly and closer to the shoulder only slightly. Sew the arms on
the body.

Hat
red yarn
Row 1: ch 2, work 4 sc into the first ch (4)
Row 2: [sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st] 2 times (6)
Row 3: [sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st] 2 times (8)
Row 4: [sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st] 2 times (10)
Continue with this pattern (adding 2 st on every row) until the hat is big enough. I for example did 21 rows (the
number of stitches on the last one being 44) but the yarn I used was slightly thinner than the yarn I used for the head
so you may not need to get that far.
ss, finish off and leave a long tail

Hair
dark brown yarn
I did Wirt’s hair by sewing short stitches on the head. The most important thing is that you try to make the stitches
look like hair and try not to leave the scalp show too much. Notice that the top of the head is going to be covered by
the hat and you don’t need to sew hair there.

6
If you need more instructions, I’ve made a little tutorial of sewing the hair. You can find it on my DeviantArt, I’ve put
the link on this pattern’s description page on Ravelry.
When you’re happy with the hair, sew on the hat.

Face
I felted the eyes and the nose with a needle on the face. You need a little amount of wool for that and a felting needle.
Do eyes first. Add a little amount of wool at a time and felt it into a round. I made the pupils with a black marker (by
pressing the tip of the marker onto the eyes repeatedly instead of actually trying to draw with it) though you can also
felt those with some black wool. The nose is pink and shaped like a triangle.
I’m still an amateur with this technique so I can’t really give any better tips for it. As always, Google is your friend
when you need some tutorials :)
The eyebrows and the mouth are sewn with black thread.

7
Cloak
dark blue yarn, leave long tail at the start, use it to join the sides in the end
I’ve put both verbal instructions and a chart for the first 5 rows. Follow whichever is clearer to you.

8
ch 17
Row 1: dc in the 4th ch from the hook, dc in the next 13 ch, ch 3, turn
Row 2: dc in the first 2 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st, 2 dc in the next
st, dc in the next 2 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st, 2 dc in the top turning ch, ch 3, turn
Row 3: dc in the first 3 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 5 st, 2 dc in the next
st, dc in the next 3 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st, 2 dc in the top turning ch, ch 3, turn
Row 4: dc in the 2nd st, dc in the next 2 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 7 st,
2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st, dc in the top turning ch, ch 3, turn
Row 5-8 (4 rounds): dc in the 2nd st, dc in the next 29 st, dc in the top turning ch, ch 3, turn
Row 9: dc in the 2nd st, dc in the next 29 st, dc in the top turning ch, ch 1
sc along the side (see the drawing), ss along the neckline, sc along the other side, finish off and weave in the tail

You should sew the suspenders before putting the cloak on Wirt. Use black yarn for it.

9
Sew on the buttons/beads. Wrap the cloak on Wirt and sew a few stitches near the neckline to join the sides. Wirt has
this light blue chain between the upper buttons, I used light blue yarn for it.

And ta-da, you are finished!

Finally
I hope you found my pattern useful and understandable. If you’ve got any questions feel free to message me.
Feedback is always welcome and I’d also be really happy to see your Wirt :)
