READING
7 Read the text and choose the correct options.
This is the curious story of a man who arrived at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, in July 1954.
According to most sources, the man, described as being European-looking and having a beard, said he was
from Europe, spoke French fluently and was carrying currency from a number of European countries. However,
when he produced his passport, airport officials saw that the country he was from was called ‘Taured’ – which
didn’t exist.
When questioned, he continued insisting he was from Taured, saying it was between France and Spain and had
existed for thousands of years. The officials refused to believe him. Getting angry, the man said this was his
third trip that year, and that he’d been making such trips for his company for five years. He couldn’t
understand why the officials wouldn’t let him continue with his trip. His passport had stamps showing he had
visited Japan before, but the officials found no evidence that his company existed, and the company he was
visiting said they didn’t know him. The officials decided to keep him guarded in a hotel room until
the authorities had decided what to do. He had dinner and went to sleep. Although the room was guarded all
night by two immigration officials, the next morning, the man, his passport and other personal items were
gone. The only other exit from the room was a window high above a busy street. The traveller had vanished
and was never seen again.
Who was this man? Some people say he must have been a time-traveller from another world. However, others
have claimed that everything may have started with a story about a possible passport from Taured to which
other details have later been added to create a fascinating mystery.
1 The man
A had arrived from France.
B had been to Japan before.
C was French.

2 He said that Taured was

A the name of his company.
B the old name for a part of Europe.
C a country.

3 He said he was
A meeting colleagues.
B on holiday.
C on his way home from a business trip.

4 Officials
A didn’t allow him out of the airport.
B put him in prison.
C sent him to a hotel.

5 The next morning,

B he jumped out of the window.
