INTERMEDIATE/JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL/SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVELS
SCHOOL YEAR 2023-2024
GENERAL GUIDELINES
A. PRE-CONTEST PROPER:
1. Only NAPSPHIL member-schools are qualified to participate in the contests. Member schools are those who have
paid their institutional fees.
2. Contestants must be bona fide students of the school they represent.
3. For Intermediate and Junior High School Levels, there will be four (4) subject areas:
SCIENCE - Science 1, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
MATHEMATICS – Problem solving, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability
ENGLISH:
Intermediate level: Grammar – Parts of Speech (Uses and Function) and Spelling
Junior High School level:
Grammar – Subject Verb Agreement and
Literature - Philippine Lit., Afro-Asian Lit., American Lit., and World Lit.
ARALING PANLIPUNAN
Intermediate level: Philippine History
Junior High School: Asian History, World History and Economics
4. For Senior High School level, there will be two (2) categories: SPELLING and CURRENT EVENTS
5. Contestants in all events should be organized in teams:
a. three (3) members for intermediate [Grade 4 (1), Grade 5 (1), and Grade 6 (1)];
b. four (4) members for Junior High School [ Grade 7 (1), Grade 8 (1), Grade 9 (1) and Grade 10 (1)]
c. three (3) members for the Senior High School [Grade 11 (1) Grade 12 (1) and the third member may either be
Grade 11 or Grade 12
6. A contestant is allowed to join one contest only. Reserved student is not allowed.
7. The team may still compete even with two members due to sickness.
8. If the school has no enrollee in one grade level, the team may still compete even if it only has two members. The
team may also get another member from the lowest grade level.
9. A team is automatically disqualified if only one member is present.
10. Each
team must have a leader and an official coach
11. Winning teams from the municipal level will proceed to the provincial level and must submit the following on
March 14, 2024 for the Provincial level contest.
a. photocopy of the contestant’s I.D.; and
b. certificate of enrollment signed by the official coach and school principal.
12. The
National level contest will be held on April 5, 2024.
13. Failure to
abide by the general guidelines means disqualification.
14. Coaches and contestants are expected to:
a. wear appropriate attire; school uniform and ID are not allowed;
b. bring 1/8 size white board, writing instrument and eraser
(scratch paper will be provided by the organizers);
c. be identified by an assigned number and not by the name of the school they
represent; and
d. prohibit themselves from having consultations during the contest proper.
14. Bringing of other students for support is not allowed.
B. CONTEST SCHEDULE:

C. CONTEST PROPER:
1. A grace period of 5 minutes will be given to each team. If the team fails to show up after 5 minutes,
the team/contestant will automatically be disqualified from joining the contest.
2. Use of calculators or other electronic devices will not be allowed.
3. Cheating in any form will not be tolerated. This is a ground for disqualification.
4. All questions have been prepared by a team of external specialists.
5. During the contest proper, contestants are expected to:
a. be on their designated seats;
b. place their team number on the upper right hand corner of the white board
(The number will be determined based on the registration.); and
c. confer with one another in a moderate voice.
6. The quizmaster must do the following:
a. announce the allotted time for each round;
b. read the question twice;
c. instruct contestants to answer only after he/she says any of these words:
“GO”, “START”, “BEGIN”;
d. declare answer as “CORRECT” or “WRONG”; and
e. break the tie by giving clincher question/s (“knock-out” system will be used).
f. In case of tie after 15 clincher questions, both teams will declare as a tie.
7. In case of problem solving in Mathematics and Science, jotting down of facts may be
done after the first reading.
8. A buzzer signals the end of the allotted time.
9. The white board will be raised by the team leader for checking. Answers must be written legibly, in
lowest / simplest term, spelled correctly, with accurate units when needed. Answers will be
considered wrong if these instructions are not followed.
10. Unless the item calls for multiple answers, the contestant should write only one answer.
11. Two official scorers will record the points in their respective tally board/sheet. The tally board will
be visible to the audience.
12. Complaints/Questions by the team leader or coach must be raised before the next question is given.
13. The decision of the quizmaster is final and irrevocable.
14. Medals and plaques will be awarded to winners.
C. SCOPE:
1. All questions for MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, ARALING PANLIPUNAN and ENGLISH shall be
based on K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum for Intermediate and Junior High School.
2. SPELLING (Intermediate and Senior High School)
a. Spelling words are limited to common English words.
b. The American English spelling system of Webster’s Dictionary shall be followed.
c. No foreign derivation and scientific terms will be included. Regardless of the position in the
sentence, all common nouns should be written in small letters while proper nouns should start
with capital letters.
3. GRAMMAR
a. Parts of speech for Intermediate level will focus on the uses and function of the different parts
of speech.
b. Grammar for the Junior high school level will focus on the rules of subject-verb agreement as
used in the sentence.
4. CURRENT EVENTS
- Current Events will cover local (Philippines) and international news from December 2023 to
March 10, 2024.

[Intermediate Level]
Easy : 5 questions for 1 point each (Multiple Choice)
Five (5) seconds will be allotted for each question
Average : 5 questions for 2 points each (Identification)
Ten (10) seconds will be allotted for each question
Difficult: 5 questions for 3 points each (Identification or Problem Solving)
Fifteen (15) seconds will be allotted for Identification
Forty (40) seconds will be allotted for Problem Solving

Easy : 5 questions for 1 point each
Five (5) seconds will be allotted for each question (Multiple Choice)
2 questions – Science 1
1 question – Biology
1 question - Chemistry
1 question - Physics
Average: 5 questions for 2 points each (Identification)
Ten (10) seconds will be allotted for each question
2 questions – Science 1
1 question - Biology
1 question - Chemistry
1 question – Physics
Difficult : 5 questions for 3 points each (Problem Solving)
Forty (40) seconds will be allotted for each question
2 questions – Chemistry
3 questions – Physics

Easy : 5 questions for 1 point each
: Ten (10) seconds will be allotted for each question (Multiple Choice)
Average : 5 questions for 2 points each
:Thirty (30) seconds will be allotted for each question

Difficult : 5 questions for 3 points each (Problem Solving)
: One (1) minute will be allotted for each question

Easy : 5 questions for 1 point each

Average : 5 questions for 2 points each.

Average:
