2 IJAUNCHING SYSTEM

A summary of the most important particulars of the launching

appliance as weII as those of the craft to be launched is given in
the preceding chapter.
The appliance is capable of handling a life saving craft of
specified dimensions and capacity, the latter comprising a total
of persons, as specified on page 4.
Details of design as well as further particulars of the equipment
follow from the accompanying documents.

2.1 GENERAIJITIES

The tife saving system is designed in that way that all necessary
functions for hoisting and l-owering of the craft are fulfilled.
The system corresponds to the enclosed arrangement drawing
This D-RC type davit system is suitable for launching a raft
including the full complement of persons from the embarkation
position to the water level. The lowering procedure is performed
due to gravity. This procedures can be conLrolled from either the
winch position, or from within the craft.
The davit system is fixed on the embarkation deck and allows an
entirely free deck near t.he raft, as no wire ropes are running on
the deck, thus causing no difficulties when embarking the raft.
Before embarking, the davit arm has to be brought t.o the outboard
position; by inserting the co-delivered hand crank on the squared
extension shaft, a slewing gear can be driven by hand power.
NOTE: In most cases it wiII not be necessary, to rotate the crane
90 degrees. ït is not required to crank further than neces-
sary, the slewing gear will hold the davit arm (in loaded
condition) in every position.
Recovery of the empty hook, for reason of Iaunching a second raft
(if any), is performed with the quick ret,urn device. A retractable
crank or handwheel is t.hen situated on the drum shaft.
Recovery of the raft is performed with the crank handle, which has
to be inserted on the squared extension shaft on the winch.
To assure a minimum of maint.enance aLI shafts are of stainless
steel. The sheaves include life time lubricated bushes. This way
further greasing is reduced to the minimum.
Additionally, there is a possibitity to mount grease nipples on the
shafts.
d-i davit international g'r'bh pg.9
ManuaI

2.2 I,ÀUNCHING INSTRUCTIONS

To assure a safe and well-executed launching, for each davit

sysLem, an instruction plate has been installed. This instruction
plate, showing the exact sequence of the launching procedure is
placed near the embarkation position.
By following the instructions one by one safe Launching is guaran-
teed. Nevertheless the complete procedures for a safe launching
and recovering will be reviewed in the next paragraph.

2.3 RÀFT LAUNCHING AND RECOVERY

For a safe launching the following actions should be taken by the

raft handling cre\^I:
2.3.1. PRËPARATIONS BEFORE LAUNCHÏNG
- Remove all protection covers.
- Check and remove any obstruction/rail work.
- Bring first raft container to the embarkation position
2-3-2 LAUNCHÏNG PROCEDURE
- Retrieve the empty hook, using the quick-return device
and jockey pulley (if required).
- Engage off-load release hook for rafts.
- Turn crane to the launching position.
Attach the bowsing lines of Lhe raft to the ship's side.
- Open the life raft container, while inflating the raft,
following the instructions of the raft buiLder.
- Embarkation, assure no people wearing sharp edged shoes
or instruments enLer t.he raf t.
- Release bowsing lines/flap.
- Lift t.he brake lever of the winch, for which two options
are available:
1) From within the raft: PulI firmly on the RED remote
control grip, to start the descend. By releasing the
remole control grip stopping is still possible.
2) From near the winch: Lift the brake lever by hand;
stopping is still possible. By actuating the remote
control lever by hand, the descend will be activated
and continued until the raft is waterborne.
- Release Lhe off-Ìoad release hook when waterborne.
- Recover the empty hook with t.he quick return crank han-
dle on the winch (if required).
- Bring the release hook to the inboard, using the jockey
pulley, and proceed wit.h the next raft (if any) .
NOTE: Arm position does not need to be altered for subse-
quent raft launchings.
d-i davit international grmbh p9.10
ManuaL
system raft handling systeÍr D-Re.02

2.3 .3 RECOVERY PROCEDURE

- The recovery of any life raft is only allowed with a
crew of maximum 2 persons in the raft.
- Make sure the wire rope falls contain slack and fasten
the of f -]oad release hook.
- Start hoisting using the hand crank or motor. Ensure
each wire rope turn remaining permanently on t.he winch
drum to be kept close to the adjacent one until rope
slack is eliminated by rope tautening.
- When reaching the embarkation position the recovery pro-
cedure is to be stopped, further recovery is performed
using the sl-ewing gear.
- Check whether the hoisting wire has been spooled up as
appropriate.
- Start slewing with the crankharidle situaLed at the
crane. Ensure no obstruclions block the path of the
raft .
- For preparing the craft for stowing, follow the instruc-
t.ions as given in the manual of the survival craft.

2.4 AUTOI!{ATIC RELEASE HOOK

The automatic release hook has been designed to meet the official
authorit.ies regulat.ions and requirements for use with single arm
davit for launching inflatable rafts.
Direct.ions f or use:
- The automatic release hook engages on the raft suspension ring
and remains locked by means of a built-in safety catch. The
engaging operation is carried out by hand. When the hook is
closed the lever is pushed up into the "Iocked'r position (see
drawing) and then both the hook and safety catch are engaged.
- After the weight of the raft has been taken on the hook and the
raft has been l-owered near to the water, the white lanyard or
the stainless rope must be pulledrrrelease"
(depending on hook type). This
t.rips the safety catch into its position, but. the
weight of the raft continues to keep the hook closed.
- Immediately the raft becomes waterborne the weight of the raft
is released from the hook, and spring pressure causes the hook
to open and release the raft.
- The automatic release hook is made of stainless steel and
requires IittIe maintenance; clean environment provided, a peri-
odical inspection and greasing is advisable. The hook must be
checked on functioning every three months.

2.5 REMOTE CONTROL

For activating the launching procedure from within the survival

craft the remote control system is foreseen:
1) Lowering system, the RED control lever can be acti-
vated by the craft handling crew from inside the
craft.
For reason of personal safety never attempt to wrap the control
line round fingers or hand, for any obstrucLion on the ouEside
could lead to serious woundings t.hen. Use the control wire grip
only as shown in the accompanying drawing "actuating the remote
control line grip".

2.6 WrNCrr
To satisfy the launching and recovery of the survival craft, the
Launching appliance is equipped with a winch, for enabling the
craft suspended by the wire rope falls, to be launched and recov-
ered as appropriate.
In essence the launching of each Life saving craft occurs by
gravity only.
For t.he purpose of craft. recovery by manual cranking, the hand
crank provided with the system is to be inserted t.o the squared
extension of the hoisting winch shaft and rotated as appropriate,
the facility is back-kick proof.
The winch system wiII be explained further in this manual.

3 WINCH SYSTEM

3.]- BASIC WINCH DESCRIPTTON

For a better comprehension of the text below, it is advisable to

unfold the accompanying illustration sheet "kinematic diagram of
winch" included further in this manual.
Basically, the wínch comprises a:
wire rope coiling gear; t.he drum or barrel
speed reducer gear
safet.y gear
brake gear
manual hoisting facility

3.1.1 DRUM
To coil, accommodate, or unwind the necessary wire rope
falls, Lhe winch is equipped with a drum, the shaft of
which is being supported in roller type bearings.
3 .L.2 SPEED REDUCER GEAR
The speed reducer gear employs an appropriate a conven-
tional gear train.
3 .l_.3 SAFETY GEAR (CENTRIFUGAL BRAKE)
To the purpose of gravity lowering, the winch includes a
governor brake for keeping the lowering speed within per-
missible limits.
3 .L.4 BRAKE GEAR (STOP BRAKE)
To the purpose of holding the survival craft in any posi-
tion a freewheel coupling has been installed.
By lifting the brake lever a spindle type axial- mechanism
opens the coupling between the gear train and this free-
wheel coupling,' Iowering due to gravity with a speed gov-
erned by the safety gear is possible.
By releasing the brake lever the lever drops back to the
neutral position; the coupling between the gear train and
the freewheel coupling prevents Ìowering by gravity. Some
assistance in positioning the brake l-ever in the neutral
position may be required, but pushing the lever downwards
with high force is not allowed since this wiII cause ex-
cessive wear in t.he bearings of the spindle type axial
mechanism.
d-i davit international gilìbh p9.13
Manual
srrstem raft handlinq svstem D-Re.02

3.1.5 MANUAL CRANKING GEAR

There is on every winch a back-kick proof manual hoisting
gear, enabling the crafL to be recovered by manual crank-
ittg as need be. For this purpose the hand crank provided
with the system has to be inserted on the squared exten-
sion shaft of Lhe winch and rot.ated as long as necessary.
If not required, the crank-handle should be stowed in its
supports on the winch. During gravity lowering the hand
crántç wiII not rotate, but nevertheless it should be in
its stowage supports.

3.2 FIINCTÏONAÏ, DESCRIPTION

The individual modes of operation are as follows:

3 .2.L LOVüERÍNG BY GRAVÏTY
For the purpose of lowering the load by graviLy, the cou-
pting is released by lifting its control lever, which also
permits the spindle mechanism to rotate.
As a result: the load is no longer restrained by the free-
wheel coupling and the drum is free to pay-out the load.
For safety reasons the design is such that in case of dis-
continuing the Iifting of the lever the descend of the
survival craft is st.opped immediately; the design is of
the rÍdead-manI type.
3.2.2 HOISTING BY MANUAL CRANKING
ManuaI crank rotation coincides with the corresponding
drum rotation, the crank engaging with gear shaft. Free
hoisting rotaLion is enabled by the incorporated non-
return device/freewheel coupling.
3 .2.3 RECOVER]NG THE EMPTY HOOK
Manual hoisting with high speed is possible, if the hook
is unloaded. By retracting the hand grip of the 'Íquick-
returnrr crank handle and by retracting the complete,
spring loaded, lever mechanism, it is possible to rotate
the drum directly (ratio 1:1).
After using this device the complete mechanism wil-I re-
tract automatically, due to the incorporated spring.
Checking is required, for excessive painting may disturb a
proper functioning of this mechanism.
If a winch of the type 02 has been applied, the recovery
of the empty hook can be realised by rotating the hand-
wheel on the drum.

4 BRÀKE SYSTEM OF LAITNCHING APPLIANCE WINCHES

The brake shoe Iinings should be periodicalty checked for wear

and, on reaching their minimum permissible thickness following
from the accompanying information sheet, they should be replaced,
observing the prescribed properties of the linings and the rivets.
The period of time between two successive checks depending prepon-
derously on the frequency and way of operation and other factors;
a generally applicable value is difficult to be prescribed. As a
rule the linings should be checked for hlear every 25 launching
procedures or every year, whichever occurs earlier; an optimum
interval will however be shown by own experience of trial and
error.
At the occasion of the above checking, the condition of the other
brake part-s should be inspected as weII ancl measures taken as
appropriate.
NOTE: WHEN START]NG ANY INSPECTTON OF Vü]NCH BRAKES, ALWAYS BE
CERTA]N THAT:
- CRAFT IS NOT HANGING IN THE WÏRE ROPE FALLS.

4. ]- SAFETY BRAKE SHOE ÀSSEIIBLY

For the purpose of proper installation after checking the brake

assembly the following information sheets are included in this
manual:
- A3-1048 Centrifugal brake assembly
- A3-1049 Exploded view centrifugal brake
Note:
Double execution of safety brake is as shown, single or
even triple executions are used as necessary.
Four rivets per lining are to be applied.
The springs should be treated with grease lubricants
prior to assembly.
Please observe the dimensions and properties of parts to
be replaced.

Manual
strstem raft handlins system D-RC.02

5 BRÀKE GEAR AND SPINDLE TYPE AXTÀL IJIFTING MECHANISM

The frequency of inspection checks and adjustment activities

strongly depends primarily on the frequency and extent of use, the
way of actuating t.he controls and similar factors; as is customary
with such kind of equipment, your ov/n experience will provide for
an optimum frequency of servicing and maintenance activities to be
assessed.
To start wit.h, a three-month interval is recommended.

5.1 INSPECTION CHECK & AD.]USTI{ENT

Please see to that purpose the accompanying illustration sheet. To
ensure a reliable performance of the coupling, the brake lever has
to remain in a horizontal posrLion, or in a position positíve of
the horizontal.
Due to a wearing process occurred bet\,veen the brake lining and the
counLer-part faces, the brake lever weight drops to a certain
extent until finally it drops back to a position of approx. 15
degrees below the horizontal position.
Adjustment is absol-uteIy necessary then, to guaranLee a safe
performance of the brake gear under aII circumstances.
To adjust the brake lever position proceed as follows:
- Make sure brake lever weight is in lowest position.
- Remove brake lever by loosening the 3 bolts on the pivot
point of the lever.
- Replace brake lever in a, positive to horizontal, posi -
tion and remount the 3 bolts.

5.2 PRECAUTIONS DURING REMOVAI, OF THE COUPI,ING ASSEI{BT,Y

If in the course of the adjustment activities the coupling has to

be dismounted, it is imperative to take every safety precaution to
prevent any accident to occur, e. g.by locking the davit arm in
the inboard position.

6 RECOMMENDED LUBRIEAÌiITS

For the recommended oil and grease fubricants, please see the
accompanying list made up in compliance with recommendations by
the oil companies mentioned therein. For obvious reasons, the list
can not be exhaustive; equivalent products by other recognised
companies are acceptable as weIL.
Lubricants have been developing unceasingly; it is advisable to
consult your lubricant supplier, in particular whenever operation
at extremes of LemperaLure should be envisaged.
I{ith respect to the particulars mentioned in the líst, your
Iubricant supplier will be pleased to assist you in making a
choice of the lubricant types optimally suited to t.he ship's area
of navigation.

7 MAINTENÀNCE

In this chapter the required maintenance wiII be described; it is

to be execuLed by the shiprs crew.
Even though the int, erval of checking and maintaining the parts of
a davit system depends on the frequency and way of operation, we
have tried to give an estimation of the required intervals.

7.1. MAINTENANCE GROUP ]., THREE MONTIIS SERVICE

7 .I.I DAVITS (greasing)

The davits have been provided with maintenance free, pre-
Iubricated, bushes, running on stainless steel shafts.
.So; a special maintenanee of the t.urni"ng part.s is not nec-
essary. NevertheLess, aII shafts have a possibility for
grease nipple mounting.
AII thread ends, required for adjustment purposes, musL
always be kept greased.
7 .L.2 WïNCHES (greasing)
AII lubrication points, if âDY, must be l-ubricated by
means of a high pressure grease gun at regular inLervals.
7 .L.3 WïRE ROPES (greasing)
Rope maintenance encompasses re-l-ubrication and if neces-
sary prior cleaning; furthermore inspection and adjustment
of aII rope reeving components like drums, sheaves etc.
Re-lubrication should employ a grease or dressing that is
compatible with the manufacturers lubricant. The coating
must be such as nol to impair the visual inspection of the
ropes surface. The applied grease should be stightly
heated beforehand. Ropes must be renewed in case of det'e-
rioration or at intervals of not more than 5 years.
7 .r.4 SHEAVES
Sheaves musL be turning freely and truly and the grooves
should seat the rope properly. A damaged sheave must be
exchanged.
7.1.5 OIL LEVEL CHECK
The oil level in the gearbox of the winch musL be checked.
For this purpose a Ievel plug has been installed on the
winch housing.

7.t.6 BRAKE GEAR

The brake gear and the spindle-type axial lifting mecha-
nism should be checked periodically.
The checking procedure has been described in paragraph
5.1.
d-i davit international gútbh pg. 18
IvÍanual
system raft handlinq svstem D-RC.02

7 .L.7 AUTOMATÏC RELEASE HOOK

The automatic release hook must be greased at regular l-n-
terval-s. Checking of functioning as described in 2.4 l_s
required.

7.2 MAINTENANCE GROUP 2, ONE YEAR SERVICE

7.2.r vüïNCHES/SLEWTNGGEAR (oir change)

AIl gearboxes have the tooth wheels running in an oi-J.
bath; the oil must be changed once a Year. Before filling
the gearbox with new oil, it. should be cleaned thoroughly
with scouring oil and the sedimenL removed from Lhe bottom
of the gearbox. The gearbox has been provided with a drain
plug on the lower side. The quantity of oil has been indi-
cated on paqe 4 rrnder 'rlaunchi.ng appliance claLarr.
7 .2.2 SAFETY BRAKE
The safety brake linings should be checked on wear. The
method is described in chapter 4.
7.2.3 ÏNSTALLING/CHANGING OF WÏRE ROPES
Speciat attention is drawn to the necessity for checking
that. the wire rope falls are running on the drum from the
correct side. This must be checked before unreeving the
rope falls.
When wedge cases are used for connecting the wire rope,
the wire rope which is under strain, must form one line
with one side of the wedge casing.
The windings on the drum must be laid tightly against each
other, they should not be laid over one another.
It. is advisable to unreeve the wire ropes once a year and
to turn the wires before they are reeved anew. (if possi-
ble) .
Tt is also advisable to cuL 30 cm (1 foot) from each wire
rope before they are reeved anew.
7 -2 -4 PA]NTÏNG
When repainting the davits, winches eLc., it frequently
happens that a further coat of paint is applied over the
prèvious one, so that the free clearances between moving
parts are entirely filled up with paint. Consequently in
the long run the moving parts seize up.
When repainting special attention musL therefore be paid
to the prior removal of the old coat of paint near the
moving parts, ât least on the dangerous areas. The grease
nipples must never be painted, to avoid a stoppage in the
grease channef.
À red circle should be painted around each grease nipple.
