Specification rev. 18.09.2018
Free-fall lifeboat system D-FH.

01. GENERAL DESCRIPTION WITH APPLIED REGULATIONS

All equipment will be provided according to SOLAS 1974 with the protocol of 1978/1988 and
latest amendments including LSA code amendments and maritime regulation of vessel's registry
(CYPRUS) and classification society(RMRS).

Davit international will provide necessary certificates requested by SOLAS and/or concerned
authority (CYPRUS) and CLASS(RMRS) certificate.

The system is designed in that way, that all necessary functions, such as launching and recovery
of the boat, are fulfilled. The system can be operated in the free-fall mode, alternatively in the
powered launching/recovery mode.

The davit system corresponds to the enclosed arrangement drawing No. G1-6168.

The davit system is fixed on a free deck and is suitable for launching a fully manned boat from
the stowed position to the water level by means of gravity or by the hydraulic power system.

In order to allow a launching and recovery procedure as appropriate, the system is equipped
with a hydraulic winch. Hoisting of the fully equipped boat, including the crew (see ”technical
data sheet”), can be realised by means of the incorporated hydraulic motor.

The winch is equipped with a one section drum, which has to wind the lowering falls.

The control push buttons for controlling of turning-out/in and lowering/hoisting are placed on deck
and are of the "dead-man" type.

To assure a minimum of maintenance all shafts are of stainless steel. All sheaves and pivot points
contain life time lubricated bushes, in this way further greasing is reduced to the minimum.

2 LAUNCHING SYSTEM

A summary of the most important particulars of the launching appliance

as well as those of the craft to be launched is given in the preceding
chapter. The appliance is capable of handling a life saving craft of
specified dimensions and capacity, comprising a total of:

- lifeboats: the permissible number of persons as specified on

page 4.

Details of design as well as further particulars of the equipment follow

from the accompanying documents.

To avoid possible injury or death, read this manual and

the instructions of the craft builders carefully before
using this system.

2.1 GENERALITIES

The life saving system is designed in that way that all necessary
functions for hoisting and lowering of the craft are fulfilled. The
system corresponds to the enclosed arrangement drawing.

The D-FH davit system is designed for launching boats in free-fall and
for recovering these boats with the davit. This type of D-FH system is
also suitable for launching a boat including the full complement of
persons, power-driven, from the launching position to the sea level.
This procedure can be introduced from the control stand at the aft
outboard railing.

It will be evident that this davit system requires an embarkation

platform on the stowed position level.

Recovery/powered launching of the boat can be introduced from the

control stand near the aft outboard railing. For the hoisting winch as
well as for the main cylinders control buttons have been installed. By
activating the "hoisting"-button the load can be lifted to the highest
position. By reaching this position the hydraulic hoisting motor will
stop, thanks to the incorporated pressure safety valve; actuating of the
control button should be stopped as soon as possible in order to prevent
excessive heating of the oil.

By activating the "cylinder out” and “cylinder in” button the position
of the davit arm can be controlled. By reaching the full inboard or
outboard position, the hydraulic cylinders will stop, thanks to the
incorporated pressure safety valve; actuating of the control button
should be stopped as soon as possible.

For the reasons of safety, the design of the control buttons is such
that an immediate braking power is available as soon as actuation of the
lever is discontinued; "dead-man"-type controls are being applied.
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.9
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

To assure a minimum of maintenance all shafts are of stainless steel.

The hydraulic cylinders incorporate spherical ball bearings which need

additional greasing.

The sheaves and pivot points include lifetime lubricated bushes. This
way further greasing is reduced to the minimum.
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.10
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

2.2 LAUNCHING INSTRUCTIONS

To assure a safe and well-executed launching, for each davit

system, an instruction plate has been installed. This
instruction plate, showing the exact sequence of the
launching procedure is placed near the embarkation position.
By following the instructions one by one safe launching is
guaranteed. Nevertheless the complete procedures for a safe
launching and recovering will be reviewed in the next
paragraph. In addition to the following operation guide the
boat manual has to be used in parallel to fulfil the boat
specific tasks when necessary.

2.3 CRAFT LAUNCHING AND RECOVERY

2.4 GRIPE GEAR (LASHING GEAR)

When not actually in use, the craft should be securely stowed for sea
trail; the way in which the gripe lines have to be applied, as well as
further details, follow from the accompanying arrangement plan.

By applying this gripe gear, the craft is secured in a seaworthy

position.

To prepare the davit for the launching operation, the boat has to be
made ready by first slipping the gripe lines.

2.5 WINCH

To satisfy the launching and recovery of the survival craft, the

launching appliance is equipped with a winch; for enabling the craft
suspended by the wire rope falls, to be launched and recovered as
appropriate.

In essence the launching of each free-fall boat can be executed by free-

fall and/or motor driven.

For the purpose of craft recovery/launching by hydraulic power the winch

is executed with a hydraulic motor.

The winch system will be explained further in this manual.

2.6 ELECTRICS

The launching/recovery of the lifeboat is performed by means of a

hydraulic motor, situated on the winch. The hydraulic power pack
contains an electric motor, driving the hydraulic pump.

The electric control system is shown on the accompanying drawing

"electric circuit diagram". It comprises the following main items:

- Electric motor, situated in the power pack.

- Starter box, enclosure IP54.
- Transformer box, enclosure IP54.
- Control station, placed in protection box enclosure IP 66.

3 WINCH SYSTEM

3.1 BASIC WINCH DESCRIPTION

For a better comprehension of the text below, it is advisable to unfold

the accompanying illustration sheet "kinematic diagram of winch"
included further in this manual.

Basically, the winch comprises a:

- wire rope coiling gear; the drum or barrel

- speed reducer gear
- motor power unit

3.1.1 DRUM
To coil, accommodate, or unwind the necessary wire rope
falls, the winch is equipped with a single drum, the shaft of
which is splined to the output stage reduction gear and sup-
ported in roller type bearings.

3.1.2 SPEED REDUCER GEAR

The speed reducer gear employs an appropriate conventional
gear train.

3.1.3 MOTOR POWER UNIT

The motor power unit is represented by a hydraulic motor, al-
lowing speeds from 0 to the maximum required. The motor
drives the conventional gear train through a multi-disc hy-
draulic brake. The brake is released during lowering as well as
during hoisting.
The motor has been equipped with a load valve, preventing ac-
cidents in the case of line-malfunctioning. The same valve is
used for the releasing the hydraulic brake.

3.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The individual modes of operation are as follows:

3.2.1 HOISTING BY HYDRAULIC POWER

Hydraulic motor rotation enacted by actuation of the control
button on the control stand results in a corresponding drum ro-
tation.

3.2.2 LOWERING BY HYDRAULIC POWER

This procedure is identical to the procedure as described in
paragraph 3.2.1 .
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.30
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

4 RECOMMENDED LUBRICANTS

For the recommended oil and grease lubricants, please see the accompany-
ing list made up in compliance with recommendations by the oil companies
mentioned therein. For obvious reasons, the list cannot be exhaustive;
equivalent products by other recognised companies are acceptable as
well.

Lubricants have been developing unceasingly; it is advisable to consult

your lubricant supplier, in particular whenever operation at extremes of
temperature should be envisaged.

5 MAINTENANCE

In this chapter the required maintenance will be described; it is to

be executed by the ship's crew. The maintenance procedure shall be
performed in accordance to Solas Edition 2001, Chapter III, Regula-
tion 20.

LAUNCHING APPLIANCES SHALL BE SERVICED AND TESTED AT

RECOMMENDED INTERVALS IN ACCORDANCE WITH SOLAS AND THE LSA-
CODE. A THOROUGH EXAMINATION, INCLUSIVE WINCH BRAKE TEST,
NOTE: AT INTERVALS NOT EXCEEDING 5 YEARS MUST BE ACCOMPLISHED.

Even though the interval of checking and maintaining the parts of a

davit system depends on the frequency and way of operation, we have
tried to give an estimation of the required intervals.

For this safety system it is compulsory to have any repair performed

by skilled labour only.

Please bear in mind that the use of “No Name” spare parts exclude any
warranty from our side. It will be dangerous also in that way that a
proper function may not be ensured.

WHEN STARTING ANY MAINTENANCE, INSPECTION OR REPAIR AT THE

DAVIT OR WINCH, ALWAYS BE CERTAIN THAT BOAT IS NOT HANGING
IN THE WIRE ROPE FALLS.
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.31
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

5.1 MAINTENANCE GROUP 1, DAILY INSPECTION

5.1.1 VISUAL INSPECTION

Visual inspection of the complete davit system should be
done, to ensure operational readiness.

ICE ACCERTION SHOULD BE REGURARLY REMOVED FROM THE LIFEBOAT

AND DAVIT TO ENSURE EASE OF LAUNCHING WHEN REQUIRED.

AN ICING REMOVAL MALLET SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN THE VICINITY

OF THE DAVIT.

Operation of heating elements (see electric) to be checked.

5.2 MAINTENANCE GROUP 2, ONE WEEK SERVICE

5.2.1 HYDRAULIC FLUID LEVEL

The level of the hydraulic fluid in the tank, which is situ-
ated under deck, should be checked every week. For this purpose
a dipstick has been installed on the tank. The level has to be
at the upper mark in home position. In this connection the hy-
draulic connections and components should be checked for
leakage.

5.2.2 AIR CONDITIONER CHECK

The hydraulic power pack can breathe, thus allowing water va-
pour and solid contaminants to enter. Temperature fluctua-
tions in the tank will cause this water vapour to condense.

HYDRAULIC OIL MUST BE KEPT FREE FROM CONTAMINATION AND

WATER!!
WATER IN OIL CAN LEAD TO CONSIDERABLE MECHANICAL DAMAGE OF
THE HYDRAULIC COMPONENTS AND TO MALFUNCTIONING OF THE
SYSTEM!!

To prevent this, air conditioner is built on power pack.

The uptake of moisture can be observed by the

change in colour of the indicator granules in
the air conditioner.

They turn from orange (active) to very dark

green (replace).

The air conditioner is completely replaceable.

d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.32
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

5.3 MAINTENANCE GROUP 3, THREE MONTHS SERVICE

5.3.1 DAVIT (greasing)

The davit sheaves and pivot points have been provided with
maintenance free, pre-lubricated bushes, running on stainless
steel shafts. So: a special maintenance of these turning parts
is not necessary.

The hydraulic cylinders are executed with spherical ball

bearings, which require additional greasing.

All thread ends, required for adjustment purposes (as sea

lashing turnbuckles, must always be kept greased.

Special attention should be given to the items as mentioned

below:
- hand operated valves of the hydraulic system

5.3.2 WINCHES (greasing)

All lubrication points must be lubricated by means of a high
pressure grease gun at regular intervals.

5.3.3 WIRE ROPES (greasing)

Rope maintenance encompasses re-lubrication and if necessary
prior cleaning; furthermore inspection and adjustment of all
rope reeving components like drums, sheaves etc.
Re-lubrication should employ grease or dressing that is com-
patible with the manufacturers´ lubricant. The coating must
be such as not to impair the visual inspection of the ropes
surface. The applied grease should be slightly heated before-
hand. Ropes must be renewed in case of deterioration.

5.3.4 SHEAVES
Sheaves must be turning freely and truly and the grooves
should seat the rope properly. A damaged sheave must be ex-
changed.

5.3.5 OIL LEVEL CHECK

The oil level in the gearbox of the winch must be checked.
For this purpose a level plug has been installed on the winch
housing.

5.3.6 DRAIN OFF CONDENSATE

Due to temperature variation it is necessary to drain off the
separate condensate. For this procedure open the drain plug
on the bottom of the tank as long as water escapes.
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.33
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

5.4 MAINTENANCE GROUP 4, ONE YEAR SERVICE

5.4.1 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM (oil change)

The complete quantity of hydraulic oil must be changed once a
year. During the changing of the oil, the following should be
kept in mind:
DIRT IS POISON TO EVERY HYDRAULIC INSTALLATION!!
So also the filter element should be changed.
Only absolute and perfect cleanliness will ensure a faultless
operation of the equipment. The quantity of oil has been indi-
cated on the drawing of the power pack.

5.4.2 WINCHES (oil change)

All winches have the tooth wheels running in an oil bath; the
oil must be changed once a year. Before filling the gearbox
with new oil, it should be cleaned thoroughly with scouring
oil and the sediment removed from the bottom of the gearbox.
The gearbox has been provided with a drain plug on the lower
side. The quantity of oil has been indicated on page 4, under
"LAUNCHING APPLIANCE DATA".

5.4.3 INSTALLING/CHANGING OF WIRE ROPES

Special attention is drawn to the necessity for checking that
the wire rope falls are running on the drum from the correct
side. This must be checked before unreeving the rope falls.
When wedge cases are used for connecting the wire rope, the
wire rope which is under strain, must form one line with one
side of the wedge casing.
The windings on the drum must be laid tightly against each
other, they should not be laid over one another.
It is advisable to unreeve the wire ropes each 30 months and
turned end for end before they are reeved anew (if possible).
Reference is made to regulation 20.4.1 of Chapter III, SOLAS
2001.
It is also advisable to cut 30 cm (1 foot) from each wire
rope before they are reeved anew.

5.4.4 PAINTING
When repainting the davits, winches etc., it frequently hap-
pens that a further coat of paint is applied over the previ-
ous one, so that the free clearances between moving parts are
entirely filled up with paint.
Consequently in the long run the moving parts seize up.
When repainting special attention must therefore be paid to
the prior removal of the old coat of paint near the moving
parts, at least on the dangerous areas. The grease nipples
and the breathers must never be painted, to avoid a stoppage
in the grease channel and malfunctions during bleeding.
A red circle should be painted around each grease nipple.

5.4.5 SPARE PARTS

Periodically the presence of spare parts should be checked.
For this purpose our recommendation can be found in the chap-
ter "SPARE PARTS".
d-i davit international-hische gmbh pg.34
Manual
system free-fall system for lifeboat D-FH.

5.5 MAINTENANCE GROUP 5, FIVE YEAR SERVICE

For this five year service it is compulsory to have any repair

performed by skilled labour only. If there are any questions please
contact our spare part and service department.

5.5.1 WIRE ROPES

Ropes must be renewed at intervals of not more than 5 years,
if not done before due to deterioration.

5.6 HOSE LINES (REPLACING)

Hose lines should be replaced in regularly intervals, even if no defects

are visible. At least after 5 years the hose lines should be renewed.
For this procedure the date of manufacturing which is marked on the hose
cover is decisively. The way of marking depends on the producer, for
example:
3Q12 = 3rd Quarter of 2012
25/09/2012 = the date directly

5.7 LOG FOR INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE

The above mentioned maintenance procedures as well as the required

inspections have to been logged up. For this reason the table below
will show an example which can be used.
