Meaning
Amigurumi is of Japanese origin and means knitted doll
(ami – knit and gurumi – doll), a Japanese trend or fashion
that consists of knitting small dolls using crochet or crochet
techniques (Mari, 2017).

Amigurumis mainly take the form of animals such as bears,

rabbits, cats or dogs, but they also take on other forms
such as foods, plants, and even accessories such as bags,

History
Fabrics emerged in the Neolithic period (6000 BC
to 3000 BC) due to the need to protect themselves
from cold, rain and other climatic effects.
Currently, the fabric is not only used to make
blankets to protect the body from unfavorable
climates. In Japan in the 50's, what we currently
know as Amigorumis was born. Due to the Second
World War, grandmothers and aunts began to knit

a wide variety of dolls; a way to entertain yourself
and the family's children in the midst of the gloomy prevailing weather.

Despite having more than half a century since the creation of amigurumis, we heard
about them on this side of the world a few years ago, which little by little took over
the shop windows and were included in major brands in the children's sector. These
can be used both as a toy and as a decorative object.
Materials employed
Amigurumis are usually knitted using wool or cotton thread.
These materials vary in thickness, color, texture and
composition, ranging from 100% sheep wool to the use of synthetic
fibers, such as acrylic and
spandex in different percentages. (Wikipedia, 2020) Image

are used. The size of the crochet hook to use is

will determine the tension of the fabric; Ideally,
the fabric is tight enough so that the stuffing is not visible and loose enough so that
the amigurumi is soft and still maintains its characteristic plush shape.

To fill the amigurumis, foam or siliconized fiber (cotton

or synthetic feather) is used, like any stuffed stuffed
animal. Recently, the use of recycled fillers has been
promoted, such as scraps of fabric, leftover yarn, sand
or rice, chickpeas or fruit stones, and Styrofoam balls.

expected result, the amigurumi being lighter or
heavier, malleable
or rigid, small or large, etc. To sew the parts that make up the amigurumi, you need
a wool needle (ideally a blunt tip to avoid damaging the threads) and thread of the color of
the parts to be sewn, although generally it is the same final thread of the fabric that is used
to sew. join each part in its place.

Since DIY (Do It Yourself) became a global movement, and craft is in fashion, the
use of other materials, such as embroidery thread or synthetic fibers such as felt,
has become more popular. noticeably extended.

Amigurumi has promoted the creation of industries dedicated exclusively to the sale of
supplies for this craft, along with a wide variety of
objects and decorative elements manufactured
following the principles and kawaii aesthetics of
amigurumi. Craftsmen are dedicated not only to
manufacture stuffed animals of all kinds, but
they have also ventured into accessories,

The basic and most widespread shape of amigurumis is the sphere. However, the
versatility of this technique allows the creation of an infinite number of shapes both
in plane and in volume, thus allowing the variety of designs to be practically infinite.
There are numerous patterns that can be found by searching specialized
bibliography, especially in Japanese and English, despite the fact that the growing
expansion of the popularity of these dolls means that the linguistic offering in which
tutorials and help can be found is increasing. perform them. However, there are
a movement called "freestyle crochet", which moves more and more people to
make their own dolls without any help other than their imagination.

Although crochet is the most used technique, amigurumis can also be knitted with
toothpicks or two needles.

Technique
The amigurumis are made with the spiral crochet
technique, so the fabric is continuous, there are as
many varieties of amigurumi as you can imagine since
crochet allows you to create different shapes that once
