Chest trauma or
Chest trauma is a serious injury to the
chest.

Chest trauma can be divided into penetrating and blunt trauma.
► Blunt chest trauma: these can be caused by a blow or bruise, a fall from a great height, an assault, a car accident (the
most common reason), etc.
► Penetrating chest trauma: caused by a knife, a bullet, explosion fragments or any object that is accidentally
introduced into the chest
Injuries to the chest wall: contusions or hematomas, rib fractures, sternum
fractures, clavicle fractures and flail chest.

Lung injury: lung contusion, pneumothorax, lung laceration, hemothorax


or hemo-neuomthorax.

Cardiac injury or blood vessel injuries: thoracic aorta injury, myocardial


contusion or cardiac tamponade.

Diaphragm injury

Esophageal injuries

Damage to the airways

Injuries to other structures of the trunk


Disease prognosis
A chest trauma is a serious injury that in many cases causes
disability or even death. In fact, it is, among the different
physical traumas, the main cause of mortality after head
trauma and spinal cord injuries .
It is important to receive prompt medical attention and
treatment to avoid serious consequences. This is because
potential anatomical and functional injuries to the ribs and
soft tissues, including the lung, heart or large blood vessels
Symptoms of chest trauma
Symptoms may vary depending on the structures or organs affected. There are some
recurrent symptoms in all chest traumas that may include

Treatments for chest trauma

► 80% of chest injuries can be treated non-surgically but


between 15 and 20% will require surgical treatment.
► These interventions can be very difficult, due to the
complications that injuries to vital structures present in
the thorax can cause. Support will also be provided with
intravenous fluids and medications, which will guarantee
the functioning of vital organs and maintain vital signs.
