INTRODUCTION:
The film "wonder" directed by stephen chbosky, deals with optimism and delicacy issues such as friendship, personal growth, loneliness and
problems related to bullying, telling the moving story of a special boy in search of acceptance with a tear-jerking happy ending.
“WONDER” DESCRIPTION:
August Pullman, aka Auggie, is a 10-year-old boy with a severe craniofacial malformation caused by Treacher Collins syndrome, which prevents
him from living a normal life. In order to see, hear and breathe normally he had to undergo 27 surgeries and, for fear of both health complications
and other children's reactions, he never went to school in his life, always receiving private lessons. When he enters sixth grade, his parents decide it
is time for him to go to school with the other children at Beecher Prep School. The principal, Mr. Tushman, delegates three students named Julian
Albans, Jack Will and Charlotte to have them visit the school. Julian turns out to be wary and unpleasant and Charlotte shows that she can only
make herself friendly with a great deal of effort, while Jack immediately takes Auggie into sincere sympathy.
Once at school Auggie turns out to be an excellent pupil but spends his days in solitude. Even during the lunch break, when all the tables are
crowded, no one ever sits at his table. At some point Jack decides to get close to him and the two form a bond of friendship. Meanwhile Julian
targets Auggie with constant bad jokes about his appearance, tormenting him along with two other companions, Henry and Miles. On Halloween
day Auggie, wearing a costume, witnesses a despicable conversation between Jack and other companions (who do not recognize him due to the
disguise), hearing him tell Julian to be just pretending to be Auggie's friend at the request of the headmaster and that he would kill himself rather
than have a face like his partner's; Auggie, embittered, decides not to speak to Jack anymore.
Jack initially doesn't understand why Auggie started avoiding him; later, thinking back to what he had said and done, he realizes in his heart that the
friendship that bound him to Auggie was not just a facade to please the headmaster but was born from an authentic personal feeling; after realizing
that Auggie was offended because he had heard the bad things he had said behind his back, he apologizes by writing to him via Minecraft and the
two become friends again. In the same period a similar experience happens to Via, Auggie's older sister, recently engaged to a boy, who reconnects
with her historical best friend Miranda, from whom she had estranged after a quarrel. Around Christmas Auggie bonds with a little girl named
Summer.
Towards the end of the year the classes organize a school trip, which Julian does not attend because he is suspended due to bullying against Auggie.
During the trip, Auggie and Jack are attacked by three older boys and, unexpectedly, Julian's friends, Henry and Miles, come to their aid. Auggie, at
the end of the school year, gets an important recognition from the principal: initially derided and marginalized for his appearance, he became an
example and befriended everyone.
REVIEW:
The director Stephen Chbosk signs a work full of nuances that, despite carrying out positive messages dictated by good feelings,
he never gives up showing the great contradictions of our time, a time when appearances reign supreme.
In this social critique, well outlined, the great story of Auggie is inserted, a disadvantaged boy in search of the approval and sincere friendship of his
peers.
Although the real protagonists are undoubtedly children, it is a film suitable for young and old, which certainly leaves great lessons to those who
decide to view it.
In my opinion, the plot is well structured, has excellent acting, but above all deals with important issues
that allow us to reflect on a reality that is not so far from us.
I recommend anyone to watch this film regardless of age, as it teaches you to go on and never give up despite a thousand adversities.
