Maybe you go to the meat department first. There is some meat on sale, and you want to find it. The
manager of the supermarket knows where customers enter the meat department. The cheaper meat is at the
other end of the meat department, away from where the customers enter. You have to walk by all the
expensive meat before you find the cheaper meat. Maybe you will buy some of the expensive meat instead
of the meat on sale.
The dairy department sells milk and milk products such as butter and cheese. Many customers like milk that
has only little butterfat in it. One store has three different containers of low fat milk. One says ‘1% fat’ on
the container. The second says ‘99 percent (99%) fat free’. The third says ‘Low fat’ in big letters and 1% in
small letters. As you can see, all the milk has the same amount of fat. The milk is all the same. The amount
of milk in each container is also the same. However, in this store they cost three different amounts of
money. Maybe the customers will buy the milk that costs the most.

You will hear part of a radio programme in which a man talks about his childhood in Australia. For
Questions 9-18, complete the sentences.
Interviewer: Each week we invite different people into the studio to talk about their childhood. This week
William Cameron talks about growing up in Australia.
William Cameron: Australia is a huge country and I grew up on the north-west coast. The southern parts of
Australia get snow but there is never any snow in the north. However, we do have a wet season and I
remember when I was a child lying in bed at night, listening to the rain clattering on the tin roof of our
house. Most houses were wooden but the roofs were generally metal. The noise was absolutely deafening
and when I got up in the morning, it was usually impossible to get to school because the river had flooded.
If the storm was really fierce, then we would stick tape across our windows in the hope that by making them
stronger the glass
wouldn't get blown out. My parents also had to keep supplies of candles and torches as the electricity supply
would regularly get cut off at the height of a storm.
Another thing that happens in the wet season is that the tracks - there are no proper roads as such - get
flooded and become impassable so we had to fly. In the dry season we travelled by jeep or pick-up trucks,
but anything and everything that people needed at other times was delivered by air - food, the post, light
bulbs, household things - there's no local shop. Even if your friends came
to visit, they would come by mail plane, too. Looking back I suppose life was quite lonely, but one of the
things I really loved was the feeling of space and the freedom of being the only person
for miles around. The wildlife and the landscape were wonderful. One of the best memories of my
childhood was riding my bike around the sugar cane fields. After the cane was harvested the
farmers would burn the land and I remember the rats running out from amongst the cane as the fire spread.
The local name for them is bandicoots and my friends and I used to chase them away so they wouldn't get
hurt.
When I was older we moved to central Australia near Alice Springs, where the summer was much hotter
and drier. Winter nights were very cold, however, and we would have to put on the heaters at night and keep
them on throughout the night. In areas like Alice Springs which are so far away from towns, young children
don't go to school. At a set time each day they link up to the radio and have their lessons on air. The
teachers send them work to do at home with their parents, but older children go away to boarding school,
which may be as much as 1000 kilometres away, although that's not much by Australian standards. Six
thousand kilometres is what we reckon to be a long distance!
As the summers are so hot people start work very early. By midday the temperatures are really high, so
everyone remains inside for safety. It's so hot that it's not even possible to keep cool by swimming, although
last thing at night we would swim in our pool in order to cool down. But even though the sun went down by
seven o'clock, the water was still hot so it was like having a warm bath rather than a cooling swim!

You will hear an interview with a woman who has left her own country to live abroad. For Questions 24-30,
choose the best answer A, B or C.
Interviewer: Have you ever considered living abroad? Most of us these days get to travel to foreign
countries either to work for a short time or, more commonly, for a holiday. The chances are you've thought
how nice it would be to spend a longer period of time in that country. Well, Karin Newman has done just
that. She left the UK a couple of years ago and is now back for a short time to see her friends and family.
Karin, what made you decide to move abroad in the first place?
Karin Newman: Well it was like you just said. I was on holiday in Italy with some friends and when the
time came to go home, none of us wanted to leave. The weather was perfect, the scenery was wonderful and
I simply didn't want to go home. And it suddenly occurred to me that there was no reason why I shouldn't
stay. OK, I didn't speak the language but I had met lots of foreigners who were working there and I thought
well, if they can do it, so can I.
Interviewer: You make it sound very easy.
Karin Newman: The decision itself was easy. But then it took quite a long time to make all the
arrangements. Fortunately, I had some money, as I was living with my parents. I'd planned on buying a car
with some of my savings so I used that money to rent a flat. But of course I still had to come back to the UK
for a couple of weeks to deal with packing up my stuff and so on. The flat was a simple one-bedroom place
but fully furnished and that meant I had a base to go back to. The flat my friends and I had been staying in
was huge and it would've been great to stay there, but it was too expensive. So I handed in my notice at
work and that was it.
Interviewer: Was there anything that you missed once you'd settle down?
Karin Newman: I didn't have time to think about things. Then after about six weeks or so I began to be
aware of being on my own a lot of the time. People had been really kind and helpful when they realised I
was new, but you can't expect that to last. And I hadn't found getting a job as easy as I'd expected. I wasn't
particularly concerned because I had enough money but life was not as enjoyable as it had been.
Interviewer: So what did you do?
Karin Newman: Well, I was on the point of wondering whether I'd made a ghastly mistake when my
landlord. Pietro, called one evening to collect the rent. He must have noticed I was looking rather down and
asked me if I was all right. I said I still hadn't found a job, even though I'd written lots of letters to different
language schools. He clapped his hands and said 'perfect' - his wife was
looking for some help in the restaurant she ran, he'd see to all the paperwork and I could start the next day.
Interviewer: So, problem solved!
Karin Newman: Yes, in one sense. But my Italian was awful. I thought: I'll never understand what people
are saying. I'll be hopeless and customers will get very impatient because they'll have to say everything so
many times. I was terrified.
Interviewer: So did you turn it down?
Karin Newman: Pietro just laughed when I tried to explain how I felt. But his wife was very kind and to
begin with I just worked in the kitchen, preparing vegetables, washing up, making salads and so on. She
spoke very quietly and gently and I understood most of what she said, and in that way I suppose I became
more confident, so when the day came to take a customer's order I was fine. I even smiled!
Interviewer: You've been there for two years now. Any plans to come home?
Karin Newman: Not for a while. My Italian's pretty fluent now and I've started doing some translation
work for an Italian company. I've made plenty of really good friends and I'm enjoying life very much. It was
certainly worth taking the risk but I think I was very lucky to find myself in a situation where everything
worked out. Some people have quite a difficult time. but my experience was just the opposite.
Interviewer: Karin, thank you very much
