Home Where Time Stands Still

Project Context
The Home Where Time Stands Still is located in a quaint neighborhood, near a temple in Kuttimukku,
Ramavarmapuram, Kerala. It is a traditional Indian home, designed in a typical vernacular Kerala
style with its typical sloping roofs, and courtyards based on the principle of Thachu Shastra, which
means living in harmony with nature. It is built in a plot area of 5000 sq.ft, for a family of five, housing
three generations.

Ground Floor GROUND FLOOR PLAN

The residence is planned as a typical Kerala-style home, comprising a verandah, courtyard,
rectangular forms, and sloping roofs. The design is partitioned into two sections, public and
private. The public area comprises the living room, courtyard, dining and the kitchen. The private
space comprises the parent’s and guest bedrooms. The two are strategically separated by a
central staircase.

12 13
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

The Verandah
The main entrance leads to the verandah also known as Poomugham made in athangudi tile
flooring which is the buffer between the indoor and the outdoor spaces. As the entrance is on
the east side, the verandah acts as a shelter from the harsh sunlight during the day and provides
ample ventilation to the house. The red oxide-covered seats on either side of the verandah acts
like a gathering space for family and friends.

14 15
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

The Entry to The House

The entrance to the house is a beautifully carved door, from Karaikudi. It gives a rich and elegant
look to the doorway. Along the same wall, by the door is an umbrella stand, combining both form
and function seamlessly. Above the umbrella stand is an appealing mirror in the same wooden
frame, which reflects the light coming in.

Living Area
The living room radiates warmth and charm with a palette of inviting tones—orange, yellow, white,
and green. The addition of greenery breathes life into the vintage aesthetic, creating a harmonious
blend of old and new. Beige three seater sofas complement the rust-toned floor, maintaining
a balanced visual appeal. Every piece of furniture, including sofas, a planter, a brocade bench,
center tables, and a wall console, is thoughtfully sourced, contributing to a holistic and timeless
atmosphere that defines the room’s character.

The Central Courtyard

The house revolves around a central courtyard, seamlessly linking all its spaces—the living area,
dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, and the staircase ascending to the first floor. Anchoring each
corner are exquisite wooden pillars sourced from Karaikudi, infusing the space with a sense of
tranquility and composure. A distinctive feature is the sloping roof adorned with clay tiles, designed
to channel rainfall strategically into the courtyard. This ingenious design not only ensures efficient
water drainage but also imbues the space with the soothing ambiance of a cascading waterfall,
creating a harmonious connection between the architecture and nature.

26 27
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

Dining Room
The dining area adopts a predominantly linear and rectangular layout, featuring a teak dining table
and chairs. It consistently upholds the traditional, antique aesthetic of the entire house, evident not
only in its design but also in the plates and wall decor. Every element within this space harmonizes
with the overarching concept and theme of the house.

Kitchen
In contrast to the overall antique and vintage theme of the house, the kitchen stands out with its
modern and functional design, crafted from lacquered paint, wood and porcelain tiles on the walls.

32 33
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

Puja Room
The puja room located on the south side of the house is a small space separated from the other
rooms by a partition jali, inspired by an old palace. The jali allows a lot of light into the room making
it well-lit. Inside the room is a wall painting, of Krishna and Yashoda, depicting a mother’s love for
her son.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

First Floor
The first floor is a private area, with a family living room, a master bedroom, a son’s bedroom, a
small library, and a terrace. Climbing up the stairs, the first common area is the mini library with
a few chairs. To the left of the staircase is the family room. It follows the same vintage concept as
on the ground floor, which makes these private spaces more gratifying and comforting.

42 43
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

Family Living
The family living area serves as a TV room and a cozy space for the family to gather and unwind
together. Featuring consistent athangudi flooring found throughout the house, this room is
thoughtfully designed for comfort. The wooden coffee table, equipped with independent trays,
adds allure to the TV room, accommodating the common habit of enjoying meals while watching
television. The daybed, adorned with traditional block print, contributes to the room’s timeless
aesthetic. Additionally, a wooden bench with rattan, adorned with bandini cushions and silk
accessories, enhances the overall ambiance of the space.

44 45
www.buildofy.com Home Where Time Stands Still | Temple Town

The Terrace/ Verandah

Stepping out from the family living through a carved door is the terrace or the verandah, which
comprises a small charming circular coffee table overlooking the greens of nature. The verandah
goes around the entire house so the bedrooms open out into these balconies as well. The balusters
of the parapet along the verandah are made of teak wood, along with the athangudi tile flooring and
the tropical whites on the wall. The terrace imparts a complete sense of contentment.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom exudes a captivating historical charm, with the bed and side tables fashioned
from rich wood, embodying a colonial era. Complementary elements, such as hanging lamps
and a jewelry box, breathe life into this vintage atmosphere. Delicately carved windows on each
side of the bed seamlessly integrate with the room’s timeless aesthetic. Vibrant curtains adorned
with Kanjivaram borders and colorful pillows introduce a lively touch to the space. Above the bed,
a captivating piece features the Ramayana inscribed in Malayalam on palm leaves, serving as a
poignant link to tradition and religious heritage.

Son’s Bedroom
The son’s bedroom exudes a colonial vibe with a refreshing blue and green palette. Wooden flooring,
a four poster bed, and lively printed fabrics bring vibrancy to the room. The wardrobe, featuring a
central dressing table, adds richness and elegance, with a charming interplay of brown and white
hues. Achieving a unique look, a printed fabric is sandwiched between glass panels for the cupboard
door. The furniture, a painting, and a kerosene lamp contribute to the overall colonial charm.

Conclusion
Prominent characteristics of this residence include its elongated steep roofs, gabled windows, and
towering pillars designed to endure the intense monsoon rains. The integration of stone, wood,
and clay, inherent to the region, contributes to the house’s distinct charm. Every detail in the home
exudes brightness and beauty, from the emerald green brocade fabric adorning the bench to the
canary yellow block-printed dining seats. The dining area further enhances the aesthetic with a
green sideboard displaying a collection of old keys, mirrors, and antique lithographs.
