Shown here: tall size in Elemental Affects Cormo Lace, color Purity

A large, featherweight shawl in two sizes (petite/tall) that is worked from neck to hem in fine lace yarn. An
allover pattern of showering buds gives way to a flounced hem of vines and leafy stems; the entire effect is
reminiscent of a light-filled bougainvillea or wisteria bower. While visually complex, this project is composed
largely of simple-to-work motifs using basic lace maneuvers. This shawl would be a lovely choice for a special
wedding accessory that will be treasured later as a christening shawl for baby.
Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size, drape, and yardage requirement.

Suggested Yarns: Elemental Affects Cormo Lace, Bare Naked Wools Cabécou Lace, Tanis Fiber Arts Pink Label
Lace Weight, Morehouse Farm Merino Lace, Brooklyn Tweed Vale, Fleece Artist Saldanha,
JaggerSpun Superfine Merino 2/18, Anzula Wash My Lace, Mrs Crosby Reticule, or any soft
lace yarn with 250 to 300 yards per ounce that knits to pattern gauge
Finished Size: 68(76) inches wide at top edge and 27(32) inches long at center back (stretched and blocked)
Yarn requirements: 1100(1400) yards
Gauge: 30 sts and 44 rows = 4 inches in stockinette (unblocked)
Needles: size 3US (3.25 mm) circular needle (or size to obtain correct gauge) and DPNs in same size for
finishing

The BO at the start of the eighth row in the edging repeat will leave one stitch remaining on the RH needle which is not
counted in the instructions following; this stitch is indicated in the charts by a heavy outline.
Where a ‘yo2’ occurs in the instructions, treat as two separate sts in the next row by working [k1, p1] as written into the
double loop below.
Markers are indicated in the pattern notes as a guideline; use of them is optional. Additional markers may be used
between individual repeats if desired to help keep track of the pattern.
The stitch count for the left and right side panels will increase in a triangular shape throughout construction.
Instructions for side edgings and triangular side panels [all sts in square brackets] are incorporated together within

Finishing:
To join top edging at center back, remove provisional cast on to release 19 starting sts. Place 8 sts from each
side onto separate DPNs and the center 3 sts onto a third DPN. Starting at the outer edge and with fabric placed
wrong sides together, use the yarn tail to graft one set of border stitches to the other in kitchener stitch. Next,
pass the tail through the sts on the third needle and draw up snugly, securing the end with a small st.
Weave in all loose ends inconspicuously on wrong side of fabric.
To wet-block, soak piece in cool water with wool soap for approximately 60 minutes.
Note: for best results, natural colors of Bare Naked Wools may be soaked and rinsed in hot water without agitation.
Rinse and roll in a towel, compressing to remove excess moisture. Stretch and pin shawl to finished dimensions
on page 1 (use blocking wires if available), pinning each scallop to a rounded shape and allowing the fabric
between scallops to fold upward while drying. Allow to air dry thoroughly before unpinning.
