Chapter 1

‫יָה‬ֶ‫א ַהָזֵּקן ֶאל־ַה ְגִּבי ָרה ַהְבִּחי ָרה ְוֶאל־ָבּ‬ 1 The elder unto the elect lady and
her children, whom I love in truth;
‫י‬ִ‫אָתם ֶבֱּאֶמת ְוׂלא־ֲא‬ ׂ ‫אֵהב‬ ׂ ‫י‬ִ‫ֲאֶשׁר ֲא‬ and not I only, but also all they that
‫ְלַבִדּי ִכּי ִאם־ַגּם ָכּל־ׂיְדֵעי ָהֱאֶמת׃‬ know the truth;
‫וּ‬‫ב ְלַמַען ָהֱאֶמת ָהׂעֶמֶדת ְבִּק ְרֵבּ‬ 2 for the truth’s sake which abideth
in us, and it shall be with us for
‫וּ ְלעוָֹלם׃‬‫ְוַגם־ִתְּהֶיה ִעָמּ‬ ever:
‫וּ ֶחֶסד ְוַרֲחִמים ְוָשׁלוֹם ֵמֵאת‬‫ג ְיִהי ִעָמּ‬ 3 Grace, mercy, peace shall be with
us, from God the Father, and from
‫וּ ֵישׁוַּע‬‫י‬ֵ‫וּ וֵּמֵאת ֲאׂד‬‫ָהֱאׂלִהים ָאִבי‬ Jesus Christ, the Son of the
‫ַהָמִּשׁיַח ֶבּן־ָהָאב ֶבֱּאֶמת וְּבַאֲהָבה׃‬ Father, in truth and love.
‫ִי‬ַ‫אד ִכּי־ָמָצאִתי ִמָבּ‬
ׂ ‫ד ָשַׂמְחִתּי ְמ‬ 4 I rejoice greatly that I have found
certain of thy children walking in
‫ִמְתַהְלִּכים ָבֱּאֶמת ַכִּמְּצָוה ֲאֶשׁר‬ truth, even as we received
‫וּ ֵמֵאת ָהָאב׃‬‫ִקַבְּל‬ commandment from the Father.
‫י ִמֵמּ ַה ְגִּבי ָרה ְוׂלא‬ִ‫ה ְוַעָתּה ְמַבֵקּשׁ ֲא‬ 5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not
as though I wrote to thee a new
‫ְכּׂכֵתב ֵאַלִי ִמְצָוה ֲחָדָשׁה ִכּי ִאם־ֵאת‬ commandment, but that which we
‫וּ ֵמׂראשׁ ְלַאֲהָבה ִאישׁ‬‫ֲאֶשׁר ָהְיָתה־ָלּ‬ had from the beginning, that we
‫ֶאת־ ֵרֵעהוּ׃‬ love one another.

‫ְתַהֵלּ‬ִ ‫ְוׂזאת ִהיא ָהַאֲהָבה ֲאֶשׁר‬ ‫ו‬ 6 And this is love, that we should
walk after his commandments.
‫ְבִּמְצוָֹתיו ׂזאת ִהיא ַהִמְּצָוה ֲאֶשׁר‬ This is the commandment, even as
 ‫ְשַׁמְעֶתּם ֵמׂראשׁ ְלִהְתַהֵלּ ָבּהּ׃‬ ye heard from the beginning, that
ye should walk in it.
‫ז ִכּי ַמְתִעים ַרִבּים ָבּאוּ ָלעוָֹלם ֲאֶשׁר‬ 7 For many deceivers are gone forth
into the world, even they that
‫ם מוִֹדים ְבֵּישׁוַּע ַהָמִּשׁיַח ַהָבּא‬ָ‫ֵאי‬ confess not that Jesus Christ
‫ַבָבָּשׂר ֶזה הוּא ַהַמְּתֶעה ְושׂוֵֹטן‬ cometh in the flesh. This is the
‫ַהָמִּשׁיַח׃‬ deceiver and the antichrist.

‫וּ ִכּי‬‫תאַבד ִמֶמּנּוּ ְפֻּעָלֵּת‬ּׂ ‫ח ִהָזֲּהרוּ ֶפּן־‬ 8 Look to yourselves, that ye lose not
the things which we have wrought,
‫וּ ְשֵׁלָמה׃‬‫ַקּח ַמְשֻׂכּ ְרֵתּ‬ִ‫ִאם־‬ but that ye receive a full reward.
‫נּוּ‬ֶ‫ט ָכּל־ָהׂעֵבר ַעל־תּוֹ ַרת ַהָמִּשׁיַח ְוֵאי‬ 9 Whosoever goeth onward and
abideth not in the teaching of
‫ׂעֵמד ָבּהּ ֵאין לוֹ ֱאׂלִהים ְוָהׂעֵמד‬ Christ, hath not God: he that
‫ְבּתוַֹרת ַהָמִּשׁיַח ֶישׁ־לוֹ ַגּם־ָהָאב‬ abideth in the teaching, the same
‫ַגּם־ַהֵבּן׃‬ hath both the Father and the Son.

‫י ָכּל־ַהָבּא ֲאֵליֶכם ְוׂלא ָיִביא‬ 10 If any one cometh unto you, and
bringeth not this teaching, receive
‫אתוֹ‬
ׂ ‫ֶאת־ַהתּוָֹרה ַהּׂזאת ׂלא־ַתַאְספוּ‬ him not into your house, and give
‫ַהַבְּיָתה ְוׂלא ִתְשֲׁאלוּ־לוֹ ְלָשׁלוֹם׃‬ him no greeting:
‫שֵׁאל ִבְּשׁלוֹמוֹ ָחֵבר הוּא ְלַמֲעָשׂיו‬
ּׂ ‫יא ִכּי ַה‬ 11 for he that giveth him greeting
partaketh in his evil works.
‫ָה ָרִעים׃‬
‫תב ֲאֵליֶכם ְוׂלא‬
ּׂ ‫יב ַה ְרֵבּה ֶישׁ־ִלי ִלְכ‬ 12 Having many things to write unto
you, I would not write them with
‫ָיר וִּבְדיוֹ ִכּי ִאם־ֲאַקֶוּה‬ְ ‫ָחַפְצִתּי ִבּ‬ paper and ink: but I hope to come
‫ָלבוֹא ֲאֵליֶכם וְּלַדֵבּר ֶפּה ֶאל־ֶפּה ְלַמַען‬ unto you, and to speak face to
‫וּ ְשֵׁלָמה׃‬‫ִתְּהֶיה ִשְׂמָחֵת‬ face, that your joy may be made
full.
‫שֲׁאִלים‬
ׂ ‫י ֲאחוֵֹת ַהְבִּחיָרה‬ֵ‫יג ְבּ‬ 13 The children of thine elect sister
salute thee.
‫ִלְשׁלוֵֹמ ָאֵמן׃‬
