Management & Functions of Management
Management:
Management means directing and controlling a group of people or an organization to reach a
goal. It is a set of principles relating to the functions of Planning, Organizing, Leading and
Controlling.
Universality of Management:
Management is needed in all types and size of organizations, at all organizations levels, in all
organizational areas and in organizations no matter where located.
Manager:
Manager is a person who Directing, Coaching, Supporting and Motivating group of people or an
organization.
Importance of Managers:
Managers are important to organizations for three reasons.
Organizations need their managerial skills and abilities in uncertain, complex, and
chaotic times.
Managers are critical to getting things done in organizations.
Managers contribute to employee productivity and loyalty.
The way employees are managed can affect the organization’s financial performance and
managerial ability has been shown to be important in creating organizational value.

Planning
Planning is decision making regarding the goals and setting the future course of action from a set
of alternatives to reach them.
Planning enables management to command the future rather than being swept away by future. In
a fast changing environment the need for planning is all the more important because risk and
uncertainty increase.
Planning includes:
Decision making
Setting goals and
Developing strategies to coordinate activities
Why planning is important:
Plan helps maintain managerial effectiveness as it works as a guide for future activities
Planning determines what the organization’s position and the situation should be in the future
and decide how to best bring about that situation.
It helps the organization in the following ways:

Reduces Risk and Uncertainty
Helps in Decision Making

Organizing
Organizing is to create the structure of working relationships between organizational members
that best allows them to work together and achieve goals.
It includes:
Deciding where decisions will be made
Who will do what jobs and tasks
Who will work for whom
An organizational structure is the outcome of organizing. This structure coordinates and
motivates employees so that they work together to achieve goals.

It is a function in which the synchronization and combination of human, physical and functional
resources take place. All the three resources are important to get result. There for organizational
function help in achievements of result, which is important for the Organization.

Leading
Leading is to lead employees from the front, motivating and influencing them to achieve goal.
It includes:
Directing, Coaching, Supporting, Motivating, Team work and Leading
Leading is all about Inspiring and Motivating
In leading, managers determine direction, state a clear vision for employees to follow,
and help employees understand the role they play in attaining goals.
Leadership involves a manager using power, influence, vision, persuasion, and
communication skills.
The outcome of the leading function is a high level of motivation and commitment from
employees to the organization
Why leading is important?
Leading play an important role in achievement of organizational goals. It is a basic function of
management. Without an effective leadership or leading an organization don’t able work
efficiently or effectively.
A leader provides vision, focus, and influence that helps an employ to better understanding of
organizational management, there position and responsibilities so that they are able to work
efficiently and able to achieve their goals.

Controlling
Controlling is one of the important functions of a management It is to seek planned results from
the employees. Controlling also ensures that an organization’s resources are being used
effectively & efficiently for the achievement goals.
Steps of controlling:
Actual performance is compared with planned performance
The difference between the two is measured
Causes contributing to the difference are identified, and
Corrective action is taken to eliminate or minimize the difference

Controlling Function Helps Managers:
Managers at all levels of management Top, Middle and Lower need to perform controlling
function to keep control over activities in their areas. Therefore, controlling is very much
important in an educational institution, military, hospital, and in any business organization.
