Introduction:
This is actually a NASA project which is sponsored by NSS (
National Space Society). We are the students of 6th and 7th
grade as per ideas and research we have done this project
about how to construct a space colony for “NASA SPACE
SETTLEMENT CONTEST” .In this project we have discussed
about how to construct a space colony if in case earth gets
any danger and gets destroyed . We may have to shift to
other places or construct a space colony in order to survive.
So, as we said about our space colony executor is the name
of our space colony where our space colony is the backup for
humanity. When earth gets destroyed by some disaster like
exploding star supernova or an asteroid hit etc we have to
shift to somewhere we can live and experience the same
effects what we experienced on our planet earth. We don’t
know whether these disasters could happen or not but if it
happens such as few million years ago such as a huge
asteroid around a diameter of 100 kilometres hit our planet
earth which totally changed our plane tic condition for a long
time and wiped of the dinosaurs which caused dinosaurs to
go extinct. We may or may experience such disaster again in
the future that is the reason why we introduced the concept
of space colony. In order to prevent this from happening we
are going to create this space colony. This presentation is a
part 1 and part 2 is coming soon for NASA settlement contest
2020 - 2021.

Exterior and Interior of Space Colony:
Material of Space Colony:
Material of the Space colony: So, as we discussed
about the space colony there should be needed
materials to create the structure of the space colony
Executor. So, to create a space colony we need a
strong material which is capable of bearing SolarWinds
radiation and gamma rays. So as per our ideas to do
such space colony its difficult because of the lack of
resource but if we started to mine asteroids, comets
,meteoroids we can get many resources. The asteroids
contain many valuable metals such as chromium ,
titanium , silver , palladium etc. Many of the space
agency’s use titanium in space craft because titanium is
very strong. If we made an alloy out of titanium
chromium and steel it would be very strong this can be
used in the making of space colony. We can also use
asteroids and design it for the body of space colony We
can use the titanium chromium and steel alloy as an
above layer the asteroid for extra protection and
strength.
Protection of Space Colony:
So to create a space colony protection is very important
because in planets such as earth has its own atmosphere
which is made up of many layers such as Troposphere,
Stratosphere, Mesosphere and Thermosphere where also a
layer of ozone which protects us from violent gamma rays.
But in space colony we don’t have any type of atmosphere to
protect from gamma rays so we need a protective shield
layer. But if we made an alloy of Titanium , chromium and
steel it will be very strong and we can use this material to
create the space colony shield. The shield width should be at
least 6000 km and should be capable of surrounding the
12000 km space colony. We decide that the shield would be a
sphere shaped object covering the entire space colony in 360
degrees which Means it would cover and protect the space
colony from all directions. The space colony has an inbuilt
asteroid detector. If any asteroid nearby surrounds near the
space colony the command center will send an automated
control to the shield system and will activate the shield
system immediately and the shield will cover the space
colony from all the sides . The shield will cover the space
colony. The illustrated image is displayed below.
Gravity:
So gravity is very important for the living of humans.
Without gravity it can cause many problems for
humans such as trauma motion sickness etc. Without
gravity it can cause our bones to get weak and over
time may even break so we have to do heavy regular
exercise to keep our bones strong. Astronauts are
trained for sustaining such atmospheric levels and live
without gravity but even that has a limited time
astronauts can't live forever without gravity. So not
only astronauts are going to live in this space colony
we are planning to shift the whole population of earth
when earth gets destroyed so we need a way to find
how to create anti gravity. According to scientists the
earth revolves around its axis with the speed of 1000
miles per hour or 1609.344 kilometers where it causes
centripetal force where in which gravity occurs.
Similarly we can create a space colony in which we can
make artificial gravity. As we know that earth revolves
around its axis at the speed of 1000 miles per hour.
The more the mass is the more gravity occurs. The
mass of earth in physics equation 5.92 x10^24 kg and
the length of earth is 12742 km approximately. If we
made our space colony at the same mass and same
length of earth and if attached thrusters for the space
colony to move around its axis like earth at the same
revolution speed of earth in 1000 miles per hour we
could able to create artificial gravity because As we
know that when earth revolves around its axis around
the speed of 1000 miles which causes centripetal force
and at the end causes gravity our space colony has
same mass same length and the same speed of
revolution time around its axis so that is the technique
how we could replicate all the earth's features of
gravity artificially
Dimensions of Space Colony:
So executor is our space colony mainly made up of
asteroids and strong metal alloys such as titanium
chromium and steel alloy. The length of our space
colony is 12742 kilometres (same diameter of earth)
the width of our space colony is 2345 kilometres . Our
space colony is a cylindrical shaped space colony. Our
space colony has thruster in the size of 2 kilometres
beneath and twin laser cannons with a size of 1 km for
defence from asteroids. Its max speed 1 light year. The
speed of our space colony is 9.461e+12 kilometres
which is equivalent to the speed of light only moves in
disasters like asteroid shower or exploding star etc.
The place where we are going to land
executor:
So to place our space colony we need a place where
we can get enough solar energy sunlight and resources.
We decided that we would place our space colony in
the axis of earth because we can get enough solar
energy and sunlight is only that place where we get nor
to high gamma radiation nor we get less sunlight.
When the earth gets destroyed by some disaster like
asteroid hit we can place our fully constructed space
colony (or) space station in the earths axis. But still the
dangers aren’t over yet scientists claim that the sun
would become a red giant after a 2 billion years and
the radiation levels will increase which is not good to
stay there and if we stay at the same solar system we
may die because of the high level radiation so we have
to move to other solar systems containing main
sequence stars like our sun. The sun will eventually
start expanding and will become a red giant and will
become very radioactive which is not suitable for
humans as it is illustrated. So after the sun becomes a
red giant after few million years the sun will explode
into supernova which cause every single planet to get
vaporised by the supernova so we should definitely
shift to other solar systems. Such as we could move to
stars like Proxima Centauri , Alpha Centauri A, Alpha
Centauri B etc which are similar stars like sun and have
solar systems. We could shift to that any of these solar
systems and calculate the size mass solar power and
decide the correct place where we get moderate
sunlight and solar energy.
Construction:
So for the construction of our space colony EXECUTOR
we can use cargo space crafts which have a capacity of
500 m asteroid carrying capacity and use them for
transporting the materials such as asteroids and strong
metal alloys to make the body of space colony. To
transport asteroids for the space colony we need 1000
cargo ships and for metals 500 ships and to transport
engines and laser cannons we need 600 cargo ships. All
the construction will be done in outer space. With the
help of mechanical working robots for support we can
use International space station for humans to stay at
work for controlling the robots. We can create 50 more
International space stations for support during the
construction of space colony executor.
Survival Needs:
So to survive in a space colony we need all the survival
needs such as gravity food water oxygen etc . So in this
chapter we discussed all the needs for space colony.
We have artificial gravity by creating centripetal force
and we can create oxygen by taking dissolved oxygen
from phytoplankton. And we can take water from
asteroids and comets by mining.
Fuel:
So fuel is very important for our space colony. So as we
know executor is very huge colony and we need a lot of
fuel. We can't use the normal fuel which we use in
space crafts and the resources on earth won't be
enough to fill up the full space colony fuel tank. So we
got an idea of extracting very radioactive solar energy
from stars by sending special space crafts and extract it
to make electricity which we can use for fuel in space
colony. We can also use liquid oxygen and liquid
hydrogen and for even more powerful fuel we can also
us the hot solar flares and radioactive gases of the
stars and extract it to a simpler form to reduce the
radio activeness and use it as the fuel for the space
colony. The fuel extracted from the gases of stars can
be very useful and can produce very powerful thrust.
And the capacity of fuel liters approximately we need is
at least 2168569896 kilo liters of fuel for the space
colony.
Soil:
So to grow food for our needs we need soil to grow
plants. So in space we cant get soil but we can get soil
from asteroids. If we started to mine asteroids we can
get soil as asteroids are rich in minerals what are
needed for agriculture and asteroids are very fertile.
But still asteroids are in the form of rock so we decided
that if we grind the asteroids with special machines till
the asteroids get crumbs. After the asteroids get
grinded to crumbs it almost comes in the state of soil.
We can then release algae on the end product of
asteroids and we releasing algae so that the end
product then becomes soil and we can use it for
growing crops.
Water:
So water is one of the most important resource in our
life and daily uses. So in space colony we need water
for all the 7 billion population because we shifting the
whole population from earth to the space colony
Executor. We found a way of how to get water in space
such as we can find water ice easily in comets and
asteroids. If we started mining comets and asteroids
we can get lot of water which later on can be sent to
the heating facility and heat the water ice. However
when the water ice gets melted we can see lot of
impurities in the water obtained from asteroids and
And comets. So we need to purify it by sending the
impure water to the purification facility and purify the
large amount of water by adding treating chemicals
and remove the dangerous gases and impurities. Also
we can find water in comets about 1.3 cubic kilometres
of water ice which is approximately 10-15 million litters
of water in a 60 miles diameter comet (when purified)
and as on asteroids we can get up to 3000-4000 billion
litters of water or even more. We can purify it and use
it for our needs. To transport steroids for mining we
can use separate cargo space crafts. Asteroids and
comets and moon can be useful for obtaining water
because we need water in the space colony in order to
survive. According to scientists there can be water ice
found on asteroids and comets. We can send the water
ice to the water facility where water ice is melted from
ice to water for using in the space colony. However the
water is impure so, we cant use it directly and we
should purify it for using the water. As we know there
is much water ice in moon we need to setup a base in
moon. So we can dig water and purify it and transport
it to the executor space station every day.
Oxygen:
So oxygen is one of the most important and valuable
resource which we use it for daily life to respire. So in
our space colony we definitely need oxygen for the
purpose of respiration but we cant find oxygen in
space But still we have a chance . As we know that we
cant grow plants immediately to produce oxygen but if
we use algae and phyto plankton we can get tons and
tons of oxygen because phyto plankton and algae
produce oxygen faster than trees. They are microscopic
organisms and have similar production of oxygen
compared to trees. So phyto plankton produce oxygen
in large abundance which we can use them for oxygen.
The worlds 80% of oxygen derive from phyto plankton
which means they produce fast in large numbers that is
the reason why we are going to use it. So as they
produce oxygen we decided that to create a facility
inside the space colony where we breed phyto

Weather Conditions:
So it is not possible to have all the weathers conditions
like on earth but its possible to have 2 weather
conditions such as summer and winter. As earth
revolves around the sun in its orbit a changes weather
gradually similarly we can make our space colony to
revolve around the sun or any other star and we can
experience the same weather conditions as on earth.
As the Executor revolves around the sun, its axis is
tilted from perpendicular to the plane of the elliptic by
23.45 degrees. It is on this axis that the Executor
rotates every 24 hours. Since the space colony is tilted,
the effects of revolution of the Executor is different for
different parts of the space colony. Certain areas are
tipped towards, or away from, the sun at different
times of the year. This tilting causes the two seasons of
the year. This tilting also creates opposite seasons in
the Northern and Southern regions of the space colony
Executor.
How to Survive with the help of
Microorganisms:
Phytoplankton:
Phytoplankton is a microscopic marine algae which
contain chlorophyll and needs sunlight in order to live
and grow and produces oxygen which is essential for
life we can take some samples of phytoplankton from
water bodies and preserve them in an container . It
also needs sunlight in order to grow so we can keep
some solar panels on the top of the executor space
station for sunlight and for the phytoplankton and
algae .Phytoplankton is not only used for breathing but
it is also essential for food growth .
Phytoplankton is of 2 types: Dinoflagellates and
Diatoms
Dinoflaggeletees:
Dinoflagellates use a tail or flagella to move through
the water their bodies are covered with shells and
diatoms also have shells but they are made up of
interlocking parts . In a balanced ecosystem When too
many nutrients are available phytoplankton can
produce extremely toxic compounds that is harmful for
humans . So as per our ideas we can allow sunlight to
pass through them only for a few hours afterwards we
can switch of the solar panels which are working for
the phytoplankton. Dinoflagellates are microorganisms
which produce their own light in water bodies we can
collect this organisms and preserve them in containers
at executor space station in any case of emergency
backup lights . If Dinoflagellates are so much in one
place then it can create harmful gases which is also
known as red tides
Diatoms:
Diatoms are algae like micro organisms which build
little houses out of glass pieces. They are the only
organism on earth with cell walls composed of
transparent . Their cell walls are made up of silica .
They turn sunlight energy into sugar. They remove
carbon dioxide from air and helps us breathe oxygen
.They also produce acids in water bodies.
Listeria Monocytogens:
Listeria monocytogenes are micro organisms which
produce electricity on their own in case if solar panels
in executor space stations gets damaged we can use
these organisms for generating backup electricity . This
bacteria transports electrons through the cell wall into
environments.
Wildlife Conservation:
Along with the humans we need to save some wildlife
and domestic life species also. So we can capture some
of the species of animals and grow them in our space
colony we can capture domestic animals like rabbit,
cow, horse and grow them as our pets , and we can
capture some aquatic wildlife species like dolphins
fishes tadpoles and preserve them in some water
bodies in executor. We can also capture some
domestic animals for food while in evacuation such as
goat , poultry species such as turkey and chicken cows
for milk etc
