                              POETRY (CONCEPTS):
TYPES OF POEMS:
   1.   Izibongo Zesimanje (Praise Poetry).
   2.   Isonethi (Sonnet) – 14 Lines.
   3.   I-ephiki (Epic) – about History, 1 character and usually is long.
   4.   I-elegy (Elegy) - associated with death.
   5.   Isathaya (Satire).
   6.   Ilirikhi (Lyric).
   7.   Inkondlo Yenkondlo (Speaks about Religion).
                                  ISIGQI – PACE:
   1. Siyanensa – Slow.
      Reason: Ngoba sinezimpawu zokuloba – because of punctuation marks.
   2. Siyashesha – Fast.
      Reason: Ngoba asinazo sinezimpawu zokuloba – because it does not
      have no punctuation marks.
              IFANA NGWAQA – REPETION OF 1/2/3 LETTER WORDS:
   1. Nga, bha, za, mba etc.
                                Umugqa – Sentences:
   1. Ivulekile – open sentences.
      Reason: Asinazo izimpawu zokuloba. i.e Does not have punctuation
   2. Ivalekile – closed sentences.
      Reason: Ngoba izimpawu zokuloba. i.e Because it has punctuation.
                               Ukuxhumana – connection:
   • Repetition of entire word in 2 or more sentences.
               Imvumelwano – Repetion of a part of a word:
1. Imvumelwano Siqalo – repetiton at beginning of a word. i.e prefix.
2. Imvumelwano Phakathi – repetion in middle of word.
3. Imvumelwano Sigcino – repetiton at the end of the word i.e suffix.
                              Isuzura:
   • Lines with commas in between – when identified, you must quote
     the entire sentence and underline.
                       Isifengqo – Figures of Speech:
   • Isenza samuntu – personification (giving human characteristics to
     non-human objects)
   • Isenza sasilwane – giving animals human qualities to animals.
   • Isingathekiso (metaphor) – starts with “uyi”.
                   Umoya Wenkondlo – Atmosphere:
   • Wokujabula – happy.
   • Wokudabukisa – sad.
                                   Izitanza
   • How many stanzas?
                   Isimo- How the poet feels?
   • Esibi – happy.
   • Esinga yayibukisa – sad.

   • What type of poem?
   • Phawula – means comment.
                                Inzwa: Senses.
   • Yokunambitha – taste.
•   Ezwakalayo – hearing.
•   Yokuhogela – smell.
•   Yokulalela – listen.
•   Ebonakalayo – touch.
• Enjambamenti – enjambament – lines that run onto the next (has
  no punctuation at the end of it and runs on the next line).
                                 Umshado
         1. Ngubani – which person:
                • Relates to imoto – LINDIWE.
                • Relates to utshwala (alcohol) and/or izidakamizwa
                   (drugs) – THOLAKELE.
                • Relates to UMSHADO (wedding) – Bhekane.
                • Relates to “umngani” (friends) – Zenze or Pamela –
                   depends on the question/extract.
         2. Uphuza utshwala – who drinks alcohol?
             Answer – UTHOLAKELE
             Support: - Yiphunga utshwala (smells of alcohol).
                       - Wabona amabhodlela (empty bottle).
                       - Amabhodlela utshwala (bottles of alcohol).
         3. uBhekane engasakujabuleli uksebenza – The reason
             Bhekane did not want to go to school.
                • Usifiso
                • Abantu (isitafu sasimujaja) – the staff would judge
                   him.
         4. Iphupho(dreams)/Okwenzeka(an event) – What was
             Bhekanes father doing in his dream:
                • uBaba kaBhekane enyenisa bonke abantu ekosha
                   ogqoke izingubo ezimnyama – Bhekanes father
                   accepted everyone into the house except a lady with
                   a black dress on.
         5. Yini eyenza uBhekane angamthandi uBhatomu? – Why did
Bhekane dislike Bhatomu?
                • Wayefuna ukungena uTholakele – He (Bhatomu)
                   like (more cause of tradition) Tholakele.
         6. Ngihogele/Ngilalele – inquisitive/eavesdrop.
         7.Umlandi – narrator.
                • Umsebenzi Womlandi (Job of narrator) –
                   Ukusitshela indaba (Tell the story).
         8.LINDIWE.
                • Isenzo (in this context her what she does):
                  SikaLindiwe soku ukuhora isikole (Was Lindiwe a
                  good role model to her students?)
                  ANSWER: Cha. Ngoba wayengenandaba nezingane
                  isikole kanye nomsebenzi wakhe – No. Because she
                  never went to school and teach her students and
                  they were neglected.
         9. Isizinda – Setting.
                • Indawo (Place) – edolobheni (urban), ngoba
                  kunamafamu (because it has factories).
                • Isikathi (Time) – Isikathi yamanje (present times),
                  ngoba izimoto futhi ucingo – because of cars and
                  cellphones.
                • Isimo Senhlalo (atmosphere) – Sibi (bad), ngoba
                  uBhatomu unesibhamu futhi izidakamizwa
                  (because Bhatomu has a gun and there are drugs
                  involved).
          10. uTholakele agawule abheko uma ezogama la – who said
          Tholakele is bad and why):
                  • Unesi kanye Sifiso.
                  • Wayephuza utshwala.
           11. Bachathazela – BAMTSHELA.
           • Akhexe umlomo – ANGAZI UKUTHI ENZENI.
            12. Imizwa (feelings) – uBhekane wayethanda uTholakele
no Lindiwe (Bhekane loves Tholakele and Lindiwe).
