“If something falls outside of immediate

familiarity to the audience, it is the undertaking

of the artist not to prove, convince or persuade,
but to simply present with an air of curiosity
and enchantment.” - Le Val.
WEL COME

Briefly, this is a carefully curated collection of

notes and ideas to accompany The Orphic
Wallet. I understand that the explanation video
is lengthy, so I have decided to include this
PDF containing some of my favourite
presentational lines mentioned in the video, as
well as a couple of bonus ideas and some extra
thoughts.

Let us begin.
SPACE

When you first receive your Orphic wallet,

you’ll notice that the leather is quite stiff. To
get started I recommend ‘breaking in’ the
wallet.

You can do this by stuffing the wallet with

cards and carrying it in your pocket. Empty the
wallet, place your fingers in the slots to loosen
them a little, then stuff the wallet again. Handle
it often, carry it in your pocket daily and insert
and remove cards from the outer load/peek slot
a few times.

Don’t worry if your wallet won’t sit flat when

closed and placed on a table. As the leather
begins to soften, your wallet will begin to sit
flat. If inserting cards into the peek section is a
little tough at first, follow the steps I
demonstrate in the Orphic wallet explanation
video.
PSYCHOLOGY

Our brain relies on patterns and expectations

developed throughout our lives in order to
navigate our existence. If you see me about to
drop a tennis ball, your brain has already
unconsciously determined the expected
outcome of my actions; the ball will fall to the
floor. Your brain sends a signal from point A to
an expected point B.

However, should that ball suddenly stop in mid-

air, the signal that was already en route to point
B crashes and doesn’t know where to go,
resulting in an involuntary, physiological
response whilst the brain scrambles to find a
new destination for the signal, but it can’t.

To some extent this explains, on an unconscious

level, how and why people react to visual
magic such as a card change or a coin vanish.
The peek function of the Orphic Wallet is so
deceptive because these neurological signals
are preserved unbroken. The expected is
perceived leaving no reason for question.

An item is placed in an external pocket.

Behind it the inner wall of the wallet, and behind that
an opaque wall of miscellaneous items.
Even if the wallet had a hole in it, you wouldn’t
be able to see through the opaque items in the
ID window. It’s like placing a card on top of the
deck and expecting to see it from the bottom.

None of the above needs to be consciously

considered by your spectator, meaning we don’t
need to consciously prove it, it’s understood
and accepted at a deeper, unconscious level.

Also, due to the way I have designed the wallet,

the peek/load section is its own section,
meaning you can stuff the ID window with as
much as you want and loading into the peek
section will always be buttery smooth with no
risk of snagging.
DAYDREAM

The following paragraph is my script for the

Daydream drawing duplication explained in the
instructional video.

“If I were to take one guess at what you’ve

drawn, the odds of me getting it correct are
extremely unlikely. So if I stand any chance at
getting this I need you to daydream about what
you have drawn. When we are daydreaming we
become immersed in our thoughts and begin to
add in extra details. The dream occupies our
entire mind space and a single thought becomes
an inner reality, and that’s what is going to help
me. Whilst you are daydreaming I will attempt
to step into it and tell you everything I see,
think and feel while I’m there. In case I can’t
describe what I am seeing, I’ll take another card
and draw what I see in my mind.”

At this point another card is removed and your

peek is gained.
GUIDING LIGHT

This is another presentation, and justification

for opening the wallet to have a good look at
your peek without having to remove anything
else from the wallet.

In the ID window you’ll need a photograph of

an inspirational person to you. It could be a
friend, a relative, an ancestor or idol. I like to
talk about Rose, my fictional gypsy fortune
teller great grandmother, whose picture is one I
found on the internet after googling ‘vintage
fortune teller’.

You’ll open your wallet, show the photo in the

ID window to your spectator while you talk
about this inspirational person to you. Maybe
they taught you everything you know or their
gift was passed on to you, or whatever you’d
like. Maybe even talk about some of the
incredible skills they were able to demonstrate,
preferably similar to what you are about to
attempt.
Next, remove a billet or business card from the
wallet and ask your spectator to write or draw
something on it.

When done, place the billet into the peek

section. Finally, mention that this person
continues to inspire you to this day, and
carrying this picture of them serves as a guiding
light in all that you do. As you say this, open
the wallet as though having one last look at the
picture before you continue, giving you a great
big peek at the billet. The best time to get your
peek is as you say “… and by carrying this
picture…” Remember to keep the wallet tilted
up like a book when you get your peek so as
not to flash.

Then continue to verbally reveal the

information using whatever presentation you
wish.
If you want to be cheeky and amuse yourself
during the performance, once the billet has been
written/drawn and placed into the wallet, talk
about how the person was able to look at people
and read their thoughts, and because of them
you are able to do the same. Then as you open
the wallet to get your peek, say (using Rose as
an example),

“She was such an inspiration, I feel that even

just looking at Rose gives me what I need to
read people’s thoughts too, and that’s why I
carry her photo.”

As you quite literally look at the photo and get

what you need to read your spectator’s
thoughts.
TAROT INTUITION

I don’t expect everyone to perform this, but it

will be perfect for anybody with a similar
performance style to mine.

You’ll need two mini tarot cards, The Sun and

The Moon. You can find mini tarot cards
anywhere online, or in most stores that sell tarot
cards, crystals, etc. The ones I use are from
Artisan Tarot, who make some stunningly
beautiful tarot decks.
To set up, I place the Sun card in the middle
external pocket on the non peek side of the
wallet (back) which will remain hidden. The
Moon card is face down inside the wallet.

I begin by opening the wallet, removing the

Moon card face down and visibly placing it into
the middle external pocket on the front of the
wallet, the peek side.
I then say,

“Many people ask me how I do what I do, but

there is nothing I can say to properly explain.
Instead, let me show you how you may be able
to do the same. What you are about to do is the
exact same technique I use every day. What I
have here is a tarot card, now regardless of your
beliefs around tarot, the most important thing is
that this is an image you’ve never seen before.
You’ll be using your intuition. Now there are no
right or wrong answers here, you haven’t seen
the image so you can’t possibly know for sure.
The tarot contains mysterious medieval
imagery but that’s all I’ll tell you. Just go into
this with an open mind and pay attention to
what feels right.

So firstly, do you feel that in the image it’s day,

or do you feel that it’s night?”
Whatever they say, I continue with,

“Great, you’ll be even better at this than I

thought.”

If they said night, I place the wallet flat into

their outstretched hand, knowing the Moon card
is the one that’s visible in the wallet. If they say
day, as I say the above line I turn the wallet
over, doing the switch I taught in the Orphic
Wallet instructional video, then place the wallet
flat into their hand, bringing the Sun card into
play.

I gesture with my hands as though referring to

the sky as I say,

“Now if you look up, what do you see?”

If they said day, they’ll inevitably say the sun.

If they said night, you guessed it, they’ll say the
moon. If they say anything else such as clouds
or stars, say,

“That’s great, anything else?”

Keep going until they say either sun or moon. I
then like to push it further by saying,

“And now if you look in front of you, what do

you see?”

And just let them speak. Anything they say is

ok, they’re taking part in a creative, intuitive
process. Try your best to relate anything they
say to the rest of the imagery in the card. You’ll
be surprised at how often people manage to get
really specific hits! I like to also help them
along by asking questions such as,

“Do you see any people?”

“Do you see any living creatures?”

“How many?”

“Is there any water in the image?”

“Are there any buildings?”

You get the idea. Obviously only ask questions

subtly relating to the image in play.
When ready to continue, I take the wallet back,
half remove the card leaving it sticking out for
them to take, and say,

“Now considering this is the first time you’ve

ever done this, you did well. Take the card and
have a look.”

I then mention the name of the card (which they

hit on), point out the sun/moon at the top of the
image and anything else they were able to hit
on, or if I can relate anything they said to
anything in the imagery. Keep it uplifting and
make them feel good about their intuitive
efforts. Continue with,

“What you’ve just done is exactly what I do,

and with time and practice you can get even
better at it. Now I would like to try the same
with an image I haven’t seen before.”

A business card is removed, your spectator does

a drawing, which is then placed into the wallet,
peeked and finally revealed in a similar fashion.
The handling goes as follows.

If the Moon card was used, keep it out of the

wallet after your spectator has looked at it.
Open the wallet and remove a business card.
Once the spectator’s drawing has been placed
into the peek section of the wallet, you can get
your peek by then opening the wallet to put the
Moon card back inside. Just remember to cover
the Sun card with your hand on the back of the
wallet when you open it for your peek. Close
the wallet, continue with the effect.

If the Sun card was used, remember you still

have the Moon occupying the side of the wallet
that has the peek section. So in this case, simply
put the Sun card back where it came from; face
down in the middle external pocket.

Do the switch/turnover move as you say the

above line, now you are back in your original,
starting position.

From here, you can safely open the wallet to

remove a business card. Once the drawing has
been made, insert it into the peek section.
As you are talking you can remove the tarot
card, turn the face of it towards you as though
having one last look, then open the wallet and
place it back inside, giving you an opportunity
to get your peek. Close the wallet, table it, then
proceed with your reveal.

Remember that in this instance, the tarot card

will be the Moon, not the Sun, so be careful not
to flash and keep the back of it to your
spectators as you put it back inside the wallet.
In writing this may seem complex, but grab
your Orphic Wallet, give it a try and you’ll see
how smooth and motivated all actions are.

Alternatively, if the Sun card was used, instead

of putting it back inside the wallet to get your
peek, leave it where it sits and use the ‘point’
peek I explained in the instructional video as
you ask your spectator to hold out their hand
before placing the wallet in their outstretched
palm.
KEY TO THE FUTURE

In the Orphic Wallet instructional video, I

talked about a ‘Seven Keys To Baldpate’ style
routine. This bonus idea uses the Orphic Wallet
to switch a key chosen by your spectator to
unlock a box containing their written goals for
the future.

I will not go over the whole idea again here as

it can be seen in the instructional video, but I
would like to provide you with the poetic
scripting used.

“They say that the future doesn’t exist because

it hasn’t happened yet, and so another way of
looking at this is to say an infinite number of
futures already exist, and one of them is waiting
to be recognised based on the decisions we
make in the present. Let’s see if you can
recognise the future you want for yourself,
based on the decision you’re about to make
right now.
Only one of these keys unlock the box, the rest
do not work. I’d like you to hold your hand
above the keys and allow your intuition to
guide your hand towards one of them, all whilst
thinking of, envisioning and imagining yourself
experiencing this future you want for yourself.
Once you’ve made your choice, pick up the key
and hand it to me.”

At this point the chosen key is placed into the

wallet to be switched. Continue with the routine
as explained in the Orphic video.

*Please note* this conceptual piece is

metaphorical. You are not implying that they
will attain this future by simply unlocking the
box, but demonstrating that they do have the
capacity within to achieve their ideal future if
they set their mind to it, and make the right
decisions and efforts towards achieving their
goals. This is motivation, not prophecy.
EVERY DAY CARRY

I often see reviews of magic and mentalism

wallets talking about how the wallet is more of
a business card holder, or doesn’t have enough
space or pockets to become an every day
wallet. I understand that everyone has their own
personal tastes when it comes to wallets and
what they need to carry in their daily lives, so I
designed the Orphic Wallet to function as a
minimal daily wallet, as well as always being
ready to perform at a moment’s notice.

Minimalism in wallets is not only fashionable,

but also conveys a strong message about its
owner. A large, stuffed wallet bursting at the
seams, overloaded with cash, receipts and
loyalty cards looks messy and disorganised. In
my opinion it is the pocket equivalent of a
hoarder’s home. A sleek, minimal wallet carry
shows a person who is confident and has their
life in order. There is a beauty and elegance in
minimalism; a less cluttered physical space
promotes a less cluttered mind. Also, those who
wear tuxedos and tailored suits opt for slim
wallets to maintain a sleek silhouette rather
than a bulging pocket.

If you find yourself carrying more than you

need, try these simple tips to minimise your
wallet carry.

You only need one debit/ATM card.

You only need one credit card.

Don’t carry every card you own. If your wallet

is lost or stolen, a thief will have a field day and
you’ll have nothing to fall back on.

Carry a small amount of cash. A few bills is

enough, you don’t need $200 in small bills
wedged in your wallet.

Empty out receipts when you get home. If you

need to keep them, leave them in your desk
drawer.

One form of ID is fine, such as a driver’s

license.
Ditch the loyalty cards and club cards. If you’re
not shopping every day, you don’t need to carry
them every day. Take them with you on
shopping days only.

Don’t use your wallet as a photo album. I’m

sure your phone will do a much better job.
Leave the printed photos safe at home, maybe
keep one important photo in your wallet.

5 - 10 business cards is more than enough.

Realistically how many do you hand out per
day unless you’re at a gig?

All of the above fits nicely in the Orphic Wallet

whilst leaving you with plenty of room for
some playing cards, ESP cards, gaffed/
gimmicked cards, billets and more. For me
personally, if my wallet comes out of my
pocket, it is to either pay for something or
perform.
THE REVERSE PEEK

The most common peek method for a wallet

containing an internal peek such as Orphic, is to
insert the card into the peek section, then open
the wallet again to remove another card and get
your peek in that moment.

But what if you don’t want to use/write on

another card? Try this.

When you first open the wallet to remove a

card for your spectator to write/draw on,
‘accidentally’ remove a couple of cards instead
of one. Table these cards and hand one of them
for your spectator to write on. Then, insert their
written card face down into the peek section.

Look/act/behave as though you’re about to

begin, then decide to clear the space in front of
you by returning the unused cards to the wallet.
By opening it here, you’ll be able to get your
peek. Then simply close and table the wallet,
and continue with your routine and reveal.
REALITY

Consider this. Let’s say I loved clowns but you

were terrified of them, and we visited the circus
together. The reality you experience would be
very different to the reality I experience, even
though we are both physically in the same
place. Both realities are different but
undeniably real. Reality is determined by what
is felt or experienced in the moment.

Regardless of your character or performance

style, what you are doing can be considered real
because you are creating a reality in which it is
possible. What your spectator experiences and
feels IS mind reading, it becomes their reality.
You are of course fully aware of the secrets
behind what you are doing and your experience
is different to theirs even though you are both
in the same place, but as in my above example,

both realities are different but undeniably real.

Thanks for reading, I hope your new Orphic
Wallet serves you well.

Until next time,

Lewis Le Val.
