Once again, I would like to thank you for purchasing this book
and I sincerely hope you enjoy “Instinct.”
Card to computer:
Effect:
Today, right here in this very room, we are going to try to bridge the gap
between this deck of cards and a computer screen. I am going to spread
through this deck of cards right here, and ask you sir to simply select one.
We will take that card back into the deck and mix it into the middle. Now just
by looking at this deck, I can estimate that your card is probably in the
bottom 20 cards here. In fact, we will put the rest of the cards away in my
pocket… err.. no actually lets just place them here on the table.
The Magician now throws the 20 cards at the computer screen and one card
appears visibly inside the monitor. It is the selected card.
The Method:
This effect never fails to fry an audience. It is memorable, different, fun, and
amazing.
For this trick you need Microsoft Powerpoint on your computer. Once you
open the program, create 3 slides with a black background. Go to
google.com and search for a playing card under images, for this example
let’s use the “Jack of Clubs.” Save the photo of the Jack and copy it on to the
middle slide of your powerpoint. Adjust the photo so it is around the same
size as the normal card when the slide show is on full screen. Make sure that
the photo of the Jack of Clubs also looks the same as the Jack in the deck
you are using.
Your slide show should consist of one black slide, followed by a black
slide with the photo of the card, followed by another black slide:
When you are ready to perform, put the slide show on full screen- the
monitor should look like it is off (because of the black slide.) You now force
the card (Jack of clubs in this example) and ditch it into your pocket using
misdirection (or through the bold way that I use in the script above).
You now throw the deck at the computer screen. At the same time, you
secretly press the right arrow on your keyboard. This is done simply by
resting your hand on the edge of the keyboard as you throw the cards at the
monitor. The large and surprising motion of springing the cards at the screen
covers up the fact that your pinky hits the right arrow on the keyboard.
When done in sync, the illusion should look as if the card instantly
penetrated the computer screen. Try this yourself at home and you will see
how amazing this looks.
After the selected card appears on the screen, your spectators will be amazed
and will think the effect is over. This is the perfect time to hit them with
another blow.
Once the effect has settled in, you palm the selected card (which you have in
your left pocket.) While some people may find it difficult to palm a card in
your left hand, the misdirection provided by the fact that your audience
thinks the trick is over is more than enough to successfully pull this off.
You now repeat the actions by bringing your hand up to the screen and
pressing the right arrow again while revealing the palmed card in your hand.
The illusion is again convincing, as the card appears to jump out of the
screen and into your hand. This is one of the most visual things you could
do. When people recall the effect, they will swear you reached into the
screen and pulled out the card.
Presentation:
It has been said that once people build a successful rapport with each other,
anything is possible. Many husbands and wives who have been together for
years can attest to this. In fact, many of you here in this audience today have
had the experience of finishing the sentence of a loved one. Tonight we are
going to try to recreate the experience, and the magic that occurs through
an unspeakable bond between 2 people. For this experiment, I need a couple
who has been together for a long time and who truly feel mentally connected
with each other.
The mentalist finds a couple and they are asked to join him on stage
How long have you two known each other? 15 years? Hmm… this should
work just great! I am going to place you both into seats on opposite sides of
this stage.
The woman is placed in a seat on the far right of the stage and the man is
placed in a seat on the left. The mentalist then approaches the lady and asks
her to bring her hands together and place her feet flat on the floor. She is
then asked to close her eyes.
Tonight we are going to show everyone here how strong relationships can
be. Hopefully I will show you all a connection that goes beyond words,
sights, and sounds. We are going to deal with something even stranger: our
sense of smell. In fact, right here I have a bag filled with many pieces of
paper- each containing a different scent written on it. You can see here we
have “coconut”, “chocolate”, “cinnamon” and more. Sir, I am going to
have you reach into this bag and pull out any piece of paper. I would like
you to read the smell written on the paper but do not show anyone else.
Now, your wife who has her eyes closed across the stage is going to try and
receive the smell you are thinking of. Simply imagine that both of your
brains are one, that both of your eyes, your ears, your noses, are one in the
same. Sir, I want you to smell your hands and simply imagine that you are
smelling the scent that you choose from the bag. And at the same time, I
would ask your wife to smell her hands as well.
The mentalist now approaches the lady sitting across the stage.
Did you smell anything in your hands? You did?!? What smell?
Her husband opens up his selected paper only to show the word “pineapple”
boldly written across the face. The couple leaves the stage with a stronger
emotional connection and hopefully, an even stronger relationship.
The Method:
To perform this effect you need to find a scented perfume. The perfume
must have a distinct smell that anyone could instantly recognize. However,
the smell must not be too potent. If the spectator can instantly smell the scent
when the perfume is taken out, the effect won’t work.
The effect works very similar to the classic “ashes on palm” effect. When
you approach the first spectator you ask her to hold out her hands. You
already have a small dab of the clear perfume on your middle finger. As she
holds her hands out palm down, you take hold of her hands and raise them
up as you secretly deposit the perfume (by rubbing your middle finger) on
her palm. She then is told to bring her hands together and relax as she closes
her eyes (it is important that your spectator does not smell the perfume until
she is told to smell her hands).
The rest is self-explanatory as you just need to use a force bag (or any other
method) to force the scent that matches the perfume.
It is the presentation that makes this effect so powerful. This routine alone
can strengthen a relationship and truly make your spectators feel special.
For a version without perfume, you can take an orange and cut a slit in it.
Squeeze the juice out of the orange and place a dab on your finger. This
works almost just as well.
If your spectator says “Hmm.. smells like Pineapple!” , you then say “that’s
interesting” and after the other spectator picks the paper out of the bag- you
revert back to your super smeller spectator. “What was that smell you
smelled earlier?”, she responds “Pineapple.”
This makes the effect at times even stronger as it gives a spur of the moment
impromptu feel to the routine.
Effect/ Presentation:
This is a great effect to use as an extra little kicker before your favorite chair
routine. This is not meant to be a stand alone piece, but rather a fun and
amazing gag that happens before whatever chair routine you are going to
perform.
On stage there are 4 chairs, each numbered 1 through 4. The mentalist asks
the entire audience to think of one of the chairs. A spectator is randomly
selected and asked to join the mentalist on stage. The mentalist asks the
audience to give the spectator a round of applause as she approaches the
stage. Once on stage, the mentalist asks the spectator to turn her back
towards the audience and simply focus on the chair she has been thinking
about.
As she does this, the mentalist secretly sticks a paper on her back saying “I
am about to sit in chair 2.” The audience laughs.
The mentalist now asks her to sit in the chair she is thinking of. Sure enough,
she sits right in chair 2!
You then go into your favorite chair routine. The lady never notices the large
paper stuck to her back, but you take it off before she leaves the stage.
Method:
Before you start this effect you must prepare 4 pieces of paper. Each paper
has a small piece of tape attached to the top of it. All 4 papers are placed on
a table on one side of the stage. As you might imagine, each piece of paper
says: “I WILL SIT IN CHAIR # ___”.
Essentially you have an index on stage of the 4 possible chair choices (if 4
papers on a table is even considered an “index”).
If you are not familiar with the Dunninger principle, essentially you are
secretly asking your spectator a question while the rest of the audience is
giving that spectator a round of applause for joining you on stage. As your
spectator approaches you when she is called up on stage, you ask for the
crowd to give her a round of applause. You then ask her which chair she is
thinking of as you shake her hand. She does not know what you are about to
do and therefore does not think anything of you asking this.
You have her turn with her back towards the audience and face the chairs
(which are numbered 1,2,3,4) and have her focus on the chair she is about to
sit on. As she does this you simply take the corresponding paper off of the
table behind her and secretly stick it to her back as you are telling her to
imagine herself sitting in that chair. It is not hard to stick the paper to her
back as you are just casually bringing your hand to her back as you ask her
to focus on the chair she is about to sit in. Everyone in the audience will see
the big bold lettering typed on her back. This will get a laugh. You tell her to
go sit in her chair… Sure enough she walks right up and sits in the chair you
predicted! You now can continue with your favorite chair routine.
Don’t forget, however, to take the paper off her back as she leaves the stage.
She will have no idea that an effect has even happened at the beginning.
Enjoy!
Outside Elements:
Everyone knows the classic 2 card transposition, and almost every magician
does it with the card changing in the spectators hand. That gets great
reactions…but I needed something extra. Instead, I have a spectator pick any
object (that you can lift up) in the room. I then put 1 card under that object,
and then perform the transpo. This makes the trick more memorable because
I am dealing with things outside “just a deck of cards.” I usually do this
effect while the spectator steps on a card, and then do the switch. The key is
to make the effect different, unique, and memorable for a spectator. One
of the key examples of this is the Invisible Deck. I used to do this trick a lot,
and I realized that I could greatly increase my reactions by having the
spectator call a friend that was close to them, and have that person name the
card. Why? There is no difference for the magician… yet for the spectator it
is completely different! They will remember the unique situation of having
to call their best friend for a magic trick.
When you go up to a spectator you have 5 minutes to prove that you are the
best magician they have ever seen or will ever see, by creating a more
memorable effect- you can separate yourself from the other magicians who
do the average, pick-a- card trick
If you are confident with your own performing style and your interactions
with your spectators, it is now time is time to take whatever you do to the
next level. Create something new and different for yourself.
Why else would I need these headphones to perform such feats? It is small
subtleties like this that can make your magic more believable. The first sign
of belief is when your spectators start asking questions to themselves.
“Maybe that is really possible?” Why else would he need those
headphones?” and so on…
If you present wearing these headphones as a joke, it won’t have the same
effect. However, regardless of how you present this, expect to hear some
giggles when you place these big bulky things on your ears. However, once
the audience sees that you are actually serious about what you are doing, the
laughs will start to be out of nervousness, anticipation, and eventually out of
amazement.
I however would not recommend doing this in front of your local magic
club. Most magicians won’t understand why you would wear headphones for
bending metal. However, in order to create better magic we have to escape
from magicians and the “magician’s standpoint.” In my opinion, we need to
think more like layman to truly create the best magical experience.
Googeling Card:
Your spectator says “stop” as you run your thumb down a deck of cards. The
selected card is turned over to show the 4 of hearts. You then turn on the
monitor of your computer to show the popular website: www.google.com
You turn over the 4 of hearts and bring the card over the “GOOGLE” logo.
Suddenly, you turn over the card to show that the 2 O’s in GOOGLE have
vanished… only to reappear drawn on the selected card!
The magician then repeats the process and rubs the card once again over the
GOOGLE logo showing that the O’s have jumped back off the card and onto
the screen! The card and computer are handed out for inspection.
The Method:
Before you are ready to perform the illusion, go to a computer and visit this
website: http://darkartsmedia.com/google.html
This is a flash based website that makes the 2 o’s dissapear when you click
anywhere on the page. It brings them back when you click again. If you
click on the google logo, it will bring you to the actual google site.
When you are about to perform this effect, visit this website on the nearest
computer. It is very important to make sure you change the address in the
address bar to www.google.com!
You will need 2 duplicate cards to perform this effect. I use the 4 of hearts
because it has lots of room on the face.
On one of the 4 of hearts, draw and color (accurately) the two o’s in the
google logo. (Or you can print them on to the card…)
Place the prepared duplicate behind the regular 4 of hearts. Perform a riffle
force and then use a double lift to show the normal 4 of hearts. You turn the
double over as you bring the prepared card over the screen. Once in position,
your right hand secretly clicks the mouse making the o’s vanish. The way I
usually do this is by moving the mouse over the o’s while I tell my spectator
to watch this area carefully. It is at this point that I secretly click the mouse.
(Do however, keep in mind that if you click when the pointer is over the
google logo the page will change to the real google.com.) After you click,
there is a delay which gives you enough time to bring the card over the logo.
You then turn over the card showing that the o’s have disappeared from the
screen only to reappear on their selected card!
During this moment of amazement, you perform a top change switching the
card out for the normal 4 of hearts. You click again, and bring the o’s off the
card and back on the screen.
If you click the google logo on the special site, it will take you to the actual
google.com. You are now left clean. Have fun with this cool and visual card
trick!
Instinct:
This next effect is one of my favorites to perform and one that I have been
hesitant on including in this book. My favorite types of magic and mental
effects are those that make my spectator feel like THEY have accomplished
something amazing. This is exactly what happens in “Instinct.” And when
your spectator leaves the show, they will hopefully become more confident
with their own intuition and personal choices.
Effect/ Presentation:
The mentalist enters the stage in the beginning of the show holding a manila
envelope.
“Inside this envelope, I have drawn a simple picture. Now, none of you
know what is drawn on the paper, but I want all of you to use your
intuition to try to guess what I have drawn. Some of you may already
have a picture in your mind of what is inside the envelope. However, the
most important thing about this experiment is that everyone goes with
their first impression, their first instinct, their gut impression. Once you
have decided upon one image it is important that none of you change
your mind.”
The mentalist then hands the envelope to a spectator in the crowd, saying
that he has a good feeling about that person. He is told not to open the
envelope under any condition.
Later in the show, the mentalist reminds the crowd about the envelope.
“The person who is holding the envelope please stand up. You have not
opened it right? And you genuinely have no idea what is drawn inside?”
“Now during this entire time have you had an image in your mind about
what you think I drew? And you have never told me what you think is
inside? And we have never met before tonight, is this all true?”
The mentalist invites the spectator to open the envelope to see how he did.
Inside is a large picture of a Ferrari.
METHOD:
This effect relies on pre-show work along with linguistic deception. Before
the show have an empty envelope in your hand as you walk up to a spectator
and introduce yourself.
“Now it is important that you don’t change your mind about what you wrote,
keep in mind that this is an experiment about first impressions. Even during
the show, do not change your mind, you are committed to what you have
written down. I also want you to keep picturing the image that you have
written down throughout the whole show. Later, during the show we will
open the envelope to see how close you really were!”
Obviously during this time, you use an impression clipboard, or center tear,
or any type of peak to see what he wrote. You let him keep the paper in his
pocket. Now obviously, before the show starts you draw whatever the
person wrote and stick it inside the envelope. Now you just follow the script
outlined in bold above. Please read over the script that I use as you will
notice some of the linguistic deception now that you understand the method.
The Mother in Law of all book tests:
Effect/ presentation:
The mentalist takes out a book from a bookshelf. He riffles the pages and
asks the spectator to say stop anywhere. The spectator takes the book and
opens to the page. He is told to read through any few lines on the page and
make a picture in his mind of what he read. The mentalist accurately
describes the picture. The spectator is now asked to think of any long word
on the page. The mentalist once again reveals the thought of information.
Method:
This uses a normal book, almost ANY book will work. The only real
mechanical work you need to do is to force a specific page. This can be done
by using a short page, a riffle force using the book, playing cards, or my
personal favorite: the miscall used in the hoy book test. In fact, I usually do
this with 2 books just as in the hoy. If you don’t know the hoy book test, I
highly recommend learning it!
So… how can you know any line and any word on the page? Well, that is
easy. If you go through the average novel you will find that the last page of
most chapters are very short- many of them look like this:
Your goal when looking through the book is to find the shortest page
possible. Anything less than 5 lines is good. Now, read through those five
lines, and remember the general story or image they describe. If you also
look through the lines there shouldn’t be more than 4 words with more than
7 letters. Remember those words. If you don’t want to do it by memory, and
you are using a pad, you can write down those words lightly at the top of the
pad.
After you force the page, you ask them to read through any bunch of lines or
a certain paragraph. Because there is only 1 paragraph, they are forced to
read through it. You also tell them to make sure that they don’t tell you
anything about the page, which stops them from saying “there’s only 1
paragraph on the page.” Everyone else who doesn’t see the page thinks that
your spectator is choosing ANY paragraph. After doing some “mind
reading,” the mentalist accurately describes scene described in the selected
paragraph.
You then ask her to think of any word on that page, but to make it “longer
than 7 letters so its not too easy to guess.” They are now forced to 1 of
about 4 words. By simple fishing (guessing the first letter) you can
determine what word they picked. Most likely all of the words on the page
will start with a different letter so it is very easy to determine the word by
guessing the first letter. (You have a 25% chance of getting it right
anyways…).
If I guess the wrong letter, I simply say “oh, really?…Hmm, let’s see how
far off I was… What was the first letter?”
Keep in mind that everyone else watching assumes that she thought of one
word and one paragraph out of many on the page she selected! This adds a
little bit of dual reality into the effect.
Much of this effect (including the title) pays tribute to Ted Karmovilich and
his classic “Mother of All Book Tests.” If you do not already have that book
test, I would recommend that you purchase it.
MENTAL MAIL
“I would like both of you to write down your emails on this piece of
paper. Perfect!”
“Now Karen, We will see if you can mentally send an email to Jeffrey’s
inbox!”
“As proof of this, I would like you to also write any sentence down on
this piece of paper that you would like to send to Jeff’s email.”
When Karen is finished writing her message, the magician then crumples up
the paper into a ball and makes it disappear.
“The paper has actually digitized and hopefully in an hour or so, that
email will transfer to your computer with the exact same sentence!
Later tonight, I want you to check your email and see if you have a
letter in your inbox from Karen’s email address. Make sure it is not a
fake email as well! If this is correct, give Karen a call to tell her that her
digital email was a success.”
Later that night, Jeffrey checks his email only to find the exact same
message from Karen’s email address!
Method:
So… how does this work?? Simple.
When you get home, go to your computer (or use a phone with internet) and
log on to fakesend.com or emkei. Fill out the information and send the
email. There are many other websites that can also send fake mail, but
almost all of them have a footer that comes with the fake email saying
that it is a prank. FakeSend and Emkei fortunately does not have this
footer (as of now.)
The Fakesend website is a great tool for tons of magic effects. If you have a
secret assistant, you can do this effect (and many others) in real time. Here is
a cool effect you can do with a secret assistant:
You find a spectator that has a phone that receives email. You tell that
spectator to close her eyes as you take her on an “out of body” experience. I
tell the spectator to close her eyes and envision herself at home on her
computer writing an email to herself with any message she wants. She
slowly types in her own email address letter by letter in her mind as she
envisions herself at her computer. After coming out of the out of body
experience, the spectators phone rings showing that she has received an
email that she mentally sent to herself.
This is of course done by having an assistant near you casually on his phone
(with internet) using the site and writing the message to the spectator. You
can also have the assistant at home on their computer as long as you have
your phone in your pocket on speakerphone so they can listen in to the email
address and message of the spectator. I have found that some phones do not
work well with this website so make sure you have a practice test run before
performing this effect. I have found that the other website I use (see below)
actually works better on a phone.
I will use the Emkei website to send an email to the spectator from
“himself” or “herself” with the subject “My Card” and the body of the email
containing the name of the card or word I will force. To do this you must
know the spectators email beforehand. You can use facebook to find out this
persons email or any one of your favorite methods to gain information.
When I am ready to perform the effect, I force the card that was written in
the email and then proceed to have the spectator close their eyes and go on a
mental journey to their computer (as described earlier). After they have
imagined writing the email to themselves in their imagination, I proceed to
tell them that all of what they imagined has actually happened. You can
imagine the face they make when I say “check your email” as they
experience complete déjà vu with what just happened only in their
imagination.
A few important notes- I have found that Emkei hasn’t really worked well
with AOL accounts so I tend to avoid AOL user names. Yahoo works
fantastic with emkei and Gmail usually works well but sometimes the email
gets put in the spam folders. I would recommend getting free accounts on
different types of email servers and seeing how each react to the Emkei or
fakesend service (fakesend usually works great with every email server, but
it is no longer free). If you find that the email goes into the spam folder, you
can change your patter to say: "sometimes computers now a days don't
recognize mentally sent emails and the message will sometimes appear in
the spam folder." Take this opportunity to come up with comedic lines that
will justify the spam folder. There are many funny lines that can be used to
not only serve the purpose of making your spectator check the "spam" folder
but also to have some laughs!
Let your imagination run wild with this site! (and try not to do too many
vicious pranks!)
I hope you enjoyed “INSTINCT.” If you have any

“Any given thing on the face of the earth can reveal the history of all things. One
could open a book to any page, or look at a person’s hand; one could turn a
card, or watch the flight of the birds… whatever the thing observed, one could
find a connection with his experience at the moment. Actually, it wasn’t that those
things, in themselves, revealed anything at all; it was just that people, looking at
what was occurring around them, could find means of penetration to the soul of
the world.”
