❏ Planning
Who? Why? How? Where? Simplicity
• Who is your audience? • Focus on the most important
• Why are they there? points
• How long will it be? • Have one key message around
• Where will it take place? which you base your presentation
Develop an outline
• Establish the key points that you will
focus on
• Work out your key message
• Develop the logical flow of your 8
❏ Preparing
RemeMber! The
Your three Power Point
FRIENDS: presentation is
NOT your actual
• Your notes which no one else sees
presentation.
• Handouts with more detailed information & references
• Visual aids that support your talk and help engage the
audience (a PPT is itself a visual aid)
9
❏ Practicing
Rehearse:
• In front of a mirror/ in the classroom or
venue where you are going to present.
• Try to record yourself to know the things you
need to pay attention to: tone, body language,
etc.
• Try to adhere to the expected time limit even
during rehearsal.
10
❏ Delivery Skills
● Verbal communication
○ Pay attention to your volume
○ Try to speak clearly
○ Avoid getting into the ‘lecture’ mode
11
● Non-verbal communication: Use body language that shows
CONFIDENCE!
○ Have good posture
○ Smile and act relaxed
○ Make eye contact with your audience
○ Avoid distracting behaviours
○ Watch for nervous gestures
○ Make sure to dress appropriately
12
3. Planning and Structuring Your
Presentation
❏ Defining Your Objective: What do you want to
achieve?
❏ Organizing Content:
❏ Introduction
❏ Main Body
❏ Conclusion
❏ Creating an Outline
13
A presentation should include: Thank you
for your
attention!
● an introduction (key message/argument & the outline)
● a main body (important points in your topic)
● a conclusion (brief review of the purpose of your
presentation and its key message)
● references to the evidence you have used
● thanking the audience and an invitation to ask questions
14
Verbal cues you can use:
● “I will begin by discussing…”
● “We will draw on 2 key theories…”
● “Now I have discussed the methods, I will
move on to…”
● “In contrast to my earlier argument…”
● “This is particularly significant because…”
● “In this presentation I aimed to…”
15
Presentation Websites
Consider using the following presentation tools:
● Google slides: good for group presentations and makes slide sharing
easy
● Prezi: fun, creative, non-linear presentations
● Slidesgo: personalised and creative templates/themes
16
Other types of Visual Aids
● Physical objects
● Poster boards
● Graphs (line, bar, pie, histogram)
● Handouts
17
Things to keep
in mind:
❏ Keep audience's attention your number one
priority
❏ Think about your images
❏ Limit your text used
❏ Design for the back row
❏ Increase readability

Examples of bad presentation slides
20
A bad presentation can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the speaker’s
message, leading to confusion, disengagement, and frustration for the
audience. One of the most common problems is slides that are cluttered with
excessive amounts of text. When there are long paragraphs or too many bullet
points on the screen, it forces the audience to split their attention between
reading and listening, which often results in them doing neither effectively.
Instead of supporting the speaker, the text competes with them, making it
difficult to follow the flow of the presentation. This can lead to missed
information or a lack of understanding, as the audience is bombarded with too
much data at once. Another significant issue is poor readability. This can stem
from small font sizes, unusual font styles, or colors that don't contrast well
with the background, making the text difficult or even impossible to read from
a distance. When people in the back of the room or those watching online
struggle to see what’s on the slide, they quickly lose interest and tune out. In
these cases, the slides become a barrier rather than a tool for communication.
Moreover, too many different fonts, sizes, and styles used on the same slide
create visual inconsistency, further confusing the audience. Color choice is
another critical factor in bad presentation design. Bright, clashing colors can
make the slide visually unappealing and even uncomfortable to look at for
Poor readability – Small fonts and bad contrast make slides
hard to read.
