What you need to know:
Level: About the Pattern:
-Confident Beginner/Intermediate -The Evergreen Mosaic Stocking is constructed using overlay
mosaic crochet. You will work the entire stocking in the round (a
Terms: continuous spiral) making color changes every “row” which is
every 66 stitches.
-American Standard
I really love Scheepjes Colour Crafter for projects like this. The
color range is huge (93 colors!!!), the DK weight is lovely, and it’s
Gauge: anti-pilling. It has a beautiful sheen too. I’m in the US and I find
-6 double crochets = 1” wide both Wool Warehouse (UK) and Jimmy Beans (US) to be
excellent at getting me Scheepjes products.
Finished Size: You can of course sub any yarn you have access to, but please
-Approx. 18.5” x 5.5” know your stocking size will likely be different if you use
something other than a comparable DK weight yarn.
Hook Size: I would recommend always using a hook that is 1.00mm smaller
than the yarn calls for.
-Size 5/0 – 3.0mm hook

Yarn: Abbreviations:
-mc – magic circle
-Scheepjes Color Crafter: DK weight, 100g
-sc – single crochet

-dc – double crochet
Zandvoort and Arnhem.
-fpdc – front post double crochet
1 ball Color A (Zandvoort)
-bpdc – back post double crochet
1 ball Color B (Arnhem)
-ch – chain
I used approx. 185 metres/203 yards of
-st – stitch (sts – stitches)
Color A and 125 metres/137 yards of Color
-sl st – slip stitch
B for one stocking.
-sk – skip
-sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
Other Materials You’ll Need: -sc3tog – single crochet 3 stitches together
-scissors -dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together
-yarn needle -blo – back loop only
-leather stripping (optional) -flo – front loop only
-leather hole punch (optional)
-personalization for stocking (optional) Special Stitches:
-2L = make flo dc 2 stitches to the left of where you normally

construction and special stitches. Special Stitches are explained on the next page.

2
Special Stitches Explained:
-2L = make flo dc 2 stitches to the left of where you normally would (2 rows below).
-2R = make flo dc 2 stitches to the right of where you normally would (2 rows below).
-S = a 2R and 2L together: just like a dc2tog stitch, but with a 2L and 2R.
It would be written out as: yarn over, insert hook in front loop of stitch from 2 rows below and 2
stitches to the right of the stitch your working, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull
through 2 loops on hook (leaving 2 loops on hook), yarn over and insert hook into front loop of
stitch from 2 rows below and 2 stitches to the left of the stitch your working, yarn over and draw up
a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops left on
hook.
The video shows an example of how to do this special stitch.
Also good to note: pay special attention to the stitches
before and after slanted stitches as they may be a little
hidden.

Some Notes:
If you have never done mosaic crochet before, don’t be discouraged! You can do it! The video will
be an excellent resource for you. I tend to be a little longwinded in my videos, but there’s LOTS of
explanation in them so they are very good for beginners!
When working mosaic crochet, you will crochet on only the right side of your work. Because these
stockings are made in the round you will not cut your yarn at the end of every row like you would
normally do with a blanket. You will instead drop the color you aren’t currently using and pick it
back up when you are ready for it at the beginning of the new row. This avoids the fringe that you
normally get when working mosaic crochet…nice and neat!
Color Changes: When completing the last st before a st of a different color, make the last yarn
over in the new color. Then complete the stitch. The video shows how to do this nicely.
The Chart: The chart is read bottom to top, right to left. The color of the cells doesn’t matter, it’s
simply there to show you what pattern is achieved if you follow the symbols. If a cell does not have
a symbol in it (x, 2R, 2L, S), it is a back loop only single crochet. If it has a symbol in it, you will need
to do something other than a back loop only single crochet.
You will make all single crochets on the chart (denoted by empty cells) in the back loop only, and all
double crochets (denoted by an x on the chart) in the front loop of the stitch from TWO rows
down. Special stitches (denoted by 2R, 2L, or S on the charts) are also made in front loop of a stitch
from TWO rows down, but on a diagonal as shown above.
You will work this pattern in the round, so in a spiral. You will not sl st and ch 1 for a new row, you
will simply continue working in the round without interruption at the end of the round except for
your color change.

3
The PatterN:
The Toe of the Stocking:
All stitches in this section will be in both loops, regular single crochet. The back loop single crochets
don’t start until we begin our mosaic section.
Begin with Color A and make a mc.
1. 7 sc in mc (wait until row 4 to tighten mc-beginning sts are easier to work in this way) (7 sts)
2. 2 sc in each st around (14 sts)
3. [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st], repeat [ to ] around (21 sts)
4. sc in each st around (21 sts)
5. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts], repeat [ to ] around (28 sts)
6. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts], repeat [ to ] around (35 sts)
7. sc in each st around (35 sts)
8. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts], repeat [ to ] around (42 sts)
9. sc in each st around (42 sts)
10. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts], repeat [ to ] around (49 sts)
11. sc in each st around (49 sts)
12. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts], repeat [ to ] around (56 sts)
13. sc in each st around (56 sts)
14. [2sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts], repeat [ to ] around (63 sts)
15. sc in each st around (63 sts)
16. [sc in next 20 sts, 2 sc in next st], repeat [ to ] 2 more times (66 sts)
17. sc in each st around changing to Color B on your final yarn over of your final stitch (66 sts)

The Body of the Stocking:

If you are comfortable working from a chart, you may now start working the chart for the body of
the stocking. Remember to alternate colors every row, and remember that single crochets are all
back loop only.
When you change your colors there is no need to cut the color you just finished. Simply let it hang
there until you need it again.
You will notice on row 24 of the chart that there is a note to chain 30 for the afterthought heel.
After you complete your color change and last stitch of row 23, you will chain 30. Then you will skip
30 stitches of row 23 and begin crocheting as normal in stitch number 31. This will leave an opening
that we will then go back later and fill in for the heel.
When you begin row 25, your first 30 stitches will be working sc sts in the back loops of the 30
chains. You will carry on with the chart from here. If row 26 calls for any dc or special stitches in the
first 30 stitches, they will be made in the front loop of the 30 chains you made in row 24.
If you are not a fan of working from a chart, here are the written instructions for the body of the

row):

72. Color A: [8 sc, 2L, 3 sc, 2R, 8 sc, dc], repeat [ ] 2 more times
Leaving a 4” tail, cut Color B and weave in tail.

Cuff:
73. Continuing with Color A, hdc in both loops of each st all the way around
74. [fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st], repeat [ to ] around
75. repeat row 74

6
76. repeat row 74
77. repeat row 74
78. repeat row 74
79. repeat row 74
Now sl st to next st, sl st to next st again, fasten off and weave in end.

Heel:
The heel is worked in the round, around the opening we left on row 24. There are 30 lower stitches
that were missed, and there are upper back bumps of the ch 30 that we single crocheted into on row
25 (so, a total of 60 sts). We are going to crochet around and around and close that opening nice and
neat. The first 30 stitches are given at the bottom of the chart, these will be your first 30 stitches into
the 30 lower stitches that were missed on row 23.
1. Attach Color A to the 1st missed st from row 24, blo sc in same st, 7 blo sc, 2L, 3 blo sc, 2R, 8 blo
sc, dc, 7 blo sc, sc2tog over the next 2 sts (the last st in the lower row you just worked and the
first st from the upper backbump row), sc in the next 28 backbumps, sc2tog over the next 2 sts
(the last backbump, and the top of the first blo sc you worked when you started this row). If
your corners seem like they have a little hole left even with the sc2tog, I found picking up an
extra string in the corner and making it a sc3tog instead fixes it.
2. Now we are done with mosaic crochet and begin using regular single crochet in both loops: sc
in next 27 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts in corner (the middle st of this should be your sc2tog from
the last row), sc in next 26 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts in corner (again, the middle st of this
should be your sc2tog from the last row).
3. sc in next 25 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 24 sts, sc3tog over corner.
4. sc in next 23 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 22 sts, sc3tog over corner.
5. sc in next 21 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 20 sts, sc3tog over corner.
6. sc in next 19 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 18 sts, sc3tog over corner.
7. sc in next 17 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 16 sts, sc3tog over corner.
8. sc in next 15 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 14 sts, sc3tog over corner.
9. sc in next 13 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 12 sts, sc3tog over corner.
10. sc in next 11 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 10 sts, sc3tog over corner.
11. sc in next 9 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 8 sts, sc3tog over corner.
12. sc in next 7 sts, sc3tog over corner, sc in next 6 sts, sc3tog over corner.
Cut a 12” yarn tail and pull up through loop. Flatten your two rows together (so the sc3tog stitches are
at the corners. Using a yarn needle and the whipstitch, sew the front loops of the stacked stitches
together.

Leather Loop:
I love incorporating leather into projects, and it really makes for a nice upgrade to them. The ½” wide
leather stripping I used is available on Amazon.

7
If you’d rather not use leather, you are of course welcome to make a loop to hang your stocking
however you would like…crochet, twine, ribbon, string, etc…the possibilities really are endless.
Here’s what I did:
Cut a strip of leather approximately 8” long by ¾” wide. Fold it in half length wise. Using a leather
punch I made 8 holes through both layers of leather (2 rows of 4 holes evenly spaced apart).

I positioned the loop (both layers of leather) on the outside of my stocking up near the cuff making
sure the bottom 4 holes would be sewn through the body of the stocking (because the cuff is so
stretchy, I wanted to make sure I was attached to the more sturdy body as well). Using leftover yarn
and a yarn needle, I attached the leather loop by sewing 2 X’s through the holes I punched.
And that’s a wrap! You’re stocking is complete and you can enjoy it for the holiday season!
Thank you SO MUCH for supporting a very small business and designer. I appreciate you more than you
know!
I love feedback, positive or negative, and I certainly don’t get it right every time. If you have
