Scene 1

<Ahemad: handicap>
[ a doctors office. The sounds of baby crying A mom rocking her baby, dad sitting beside
her. Looking worried]
Doctor: during tests, we determined that your baby cannot feel anything below his hips.
Mom: [ scared] what are you saying doctor?
Doctor: maam, your son seems to be handicap. He cannot move his legs, you can try
physical therapy as he grows, but from where we’re sitting, it looks impossible for him to
ever walk

Scene 2
<Serena : dyslexic>
[ another girl, slightly older, 8 years(?). Sitting at a desk]
Nurse: okay, how about you tell me what this letter is [ holds up a big “D”]
Kid: that’s B
Nurse: [looking sympathetic] now can you draw me the number 3?
Kid: [draws it wrong]
Mom: (annoyed) see doctor, she cant do anything! Refuses to learn basic knowledge. No
matter how much we try! Shes seven now, she should know these things!!
Nurse: ma’am, calm down. It doesnt seem to be her fault.
Mom: (confused) what are you saying?
Nurse: im saying, your daughter is probably dyslexic.

Scene 3
[ ahemad wakes up. Shuts off his alarm clock. Realises what day it is. Visibly gets excited,
gets up and transfers himself to his wheelchair, that is kept right beside his bed]
[ we see him put on a shirt, we see him put on a tie]
Ahemad: (to himself) this is the start of my life (smiles brighter. Moves forward)

Scene 4
[ ahemad reaches the building. Gets past security. He gets to the entrance and realises
there isnt a ramp for his wheelchair]
Ahemad: (confused) where is the ramp..?
[ he moves around looking for it. Cant find it]
[ a woman comes out, wearing a business outfit. She presumably works at this office]
[ ahemad spots her. And approaches her]

Ahemad: excuse me miss, I need some help

The woman: (smiles kindly) yes sir, what’s the problem?
Ahemad: well, i’m supposed to give an interview here for a job in ten minutes, but i cant
seem to find the ramp or a service elevator. Do you know how I’ll be able to get inside the
building?
The woman: (stop’s smiling. Looks guilty) well sir, im so sorry, but our building doesnt have
a ramp.
Ahemad: (looks annoyed) what do you mean you dont have a ramp?? It’s required by the
law!
The woman: I understand sir, and I truly am sorry for your trouble, but i cant answer that
question, im just an employee
Ahemad: (clams down) right, of course. Thank you for informing me

(Woman walks away)

(Ahemad picks up his phone and calls someone)

Caller: hello?
Ahemad: yes hi, this is ahemad yusauf speaking. Im supposed to be giving an interview for
the graphic designer’s position in ten minutes?
Caller: ah yes sir, we are very excited to meet you and get to know you better
Ahemad: well I dont think that will be possible given i cant enter your building
Caller: huh? Why sir?
Ahemad: (annoyed) well because im handicap and you dont have a ramp at your entrance!
You dont have one anywhere ! Are you aware the law requires you to have one?
Caller: I see sir, but there are no handicap people working in our building, so we don’t
require one
Ahemad: that’s not the point, what if I started working here??
Caller: well…to be Frank with you..I Dont think we will be hiring you, that would mean
having to provide special accommodations for you, and we dont have the money for that.
Ahemad: this is such discrimination! (Cuts the call) (furious) (begins to cry)

[ a woman walks out of a building, looking sad, she Sees ahemad cry and goes to him. She
kneels in front of him and taps his knees]

Serena: hi. Ahemad right? We went to school together? (Hesitant)

Ahemad: (wipes his eyes) oh hello Serena. I wasnt expecting to see you here.
Serena: are you alright? What’s the matter?
Ahemad: (gives a sympathetic smile) nothing much. Just lost a job because the company
refuses to install a ramp.
Serena: (looks around, realises what happened. Gets sad) oh ahemad, im so sorry, you
really dont deserve that.
Ahemad: what can you do. (Waits 3 seconds) what are you doing here? You Dont seem to
be all jolly either
Serena: (gives out a sad laugh) well..I managed to make it to the job, its just that they dont
think im Smart enough to do it..

[ahemad looks confused]

Serena: well…

Scene cuts out

Screen goes black

Scene 5
[She goes for an interview, takes the stairs.
She talks with the interviewer]

Interviewer: well Serena, congratulations on getting this job! Welcome to our data analysis
team!
Serena: oh thank you so much! Its always Been a dream of mine to work here
Interviewer: (nods) well..lets discuss your work load and salary

[ Serena nods. Interviewer picks up a stack of files and keeps it in front of her]

Interviewer: now normally, we assign 10 files of 65gb a week to everyone working their
first year, and pay you 12k a week for that. But due to your… (hesitant) condition.. its
inevitable that you do less work, so your salary will be 8k a week.
Serena: (looks confused) oh no sir, there is no need for that. I can assure you, despite my
dyslexia, I can take on the same work load as everyone else in this office, and deserve the
same salary as well. I would just require a computer software to assist me. And that
computer software is already present in most computers. So its really no problem!
Interviewer: (laughs) you really expect me to believe a *dyslexic* person (he says it in a
discriminatory manner) can do the same work my normal workers can? And that well too?
Its okay. I understand you Lot are not as smart
Serena: (getting angrier) sir, you are wildly mistaken. I can assure you, I am perfectly
capable of doing this job well. After all, I have the same qualifications as everyone else in
this office!
Interviewer: dont make this about fairness. This is completely fair. Either take the job or
dont.
Serena: (getting up and leaving) well I dont want a job in a place where I am thought less
of simply because of my disability!

[gets up and stalks out]

[screen goes black]

Scene 6

Ahemad: (looks sad) people are so mean sometimes. And for what? Just because i dont
move around the way you do, I’m deemed *lesser*?
Serena: its so sad, society has come such a long way since we were born, and yet, we face
the same problems we did in our childhood
Ahemad: (frustrated) when will they understand we arent LESSER than them? That we are
simply just DIFFERENT.
Serena: the day they realise we are just as capable as them, just as smart, just as healthy,
will be the day I find peace.
They walk around thinking Theyre better than us because they fit into society’s definition
of “normal”. Ive had quite enough. We deserve just as much as they do, the same jobs,
the same lives, the same happiness.
Ahemad: (nods) they go around enjoying the work we do for them, the contributions the
likes of an autistic Issac Newton, or a impaired Steven hawking have made, but never turn
around and do something for us?
Serena: well maybe its time we do the same. We don’t need to “seem
Normal” to do the things they do, and do them just as well- if not better. We are perfect
just as we are, and its time the test of the world accepts that.
Ahemad: youre right Serena.

[ scene fades out into the next]

Scene 7

[ it is a collage of clips of newspaper clippings of Serena and ahemad having done really
well in their fields. Things like “employee of the year” , “first dyslexic to be COO of so-and-
so company”
And then throw in news paper clippings of other disabled people who have done extremely
well for themselves]

Scene 8

[screen says 10 years later]

[ the scene consists of a meeting like place, where Serena, ahemad, and a boss are sitting.
The boss’ eyes keep flickering all over the room and she keeps feeling around for things]

Boss: so Serena, whats the update on the numbers of our latest campaign?
Serena: [ hands boss a file, that boss opens and feels at (try to zero in on brail)] They are
looking fantastic boss, almost a 20% increase! If we stay on this track our projections for
this year would be at an all time high
Boss: (finished reading the brail) these are definitely amazing numbers. Well done. And
ahemad? What about you? Where are the ideas for the new ad campaign?
Ahemad: (also hands her a file, which is now a photo. Bellow the photo, there is captions
and brail. Boss starts to feel brail) I ran this past your assistant-director and she also
approved of it. Serena and her team will run numbers today and if they look good we’ll
begin putting this to work
Boss: this sounds quite interesting, im excited to see how it does.
[ they all smile at each other]
[scene fades out]
