Canvas workshop in Ethiopia Nov 2024

Preparation before the WS


 Register and log into Canvas.
o Check the text at the end of this document on how to get access and change
language.
 Go to Account > Profile, and add a profile picture
 Find and enter the training course on the Dashboard, and watch the introduction
video
 Bring a laptop to the workshop
 Laptop with webcam is preferable.
 Look through your previous recorded lessons and think about
improvements
 Things to have in mind:
o Language tone and clarity of the message you try to get through
o Body language
o Picture build up – clothes – colors – background
o Sound – MOST IMPORTANT – how can it be better?
o The buildup of tension– the story telling
o Pictures shown – better to switch between “pic in pic” and full
screen?
o The length of the lesson – to long? Break it up?
o The use of student activities – how to – activities with or without
feedback.

Day 1: Lunch – rest of the day

Exercises
Find and enter the course “Sandbox” on the Dashboard.
Create a new module
Make, name, switch places

Add a file in a module


Find the module, transfer, publish

Create a Page in a module


Go to Modules and add a new Page in one of the modules.
Enter the page and edit:
 Add text
 Add an image (remember copyrights)
 Add a video from YouTube via Canvas
 Add a document from your computer
 Add a link from a web site

Work in groups and switch between being a “Teacher” and a “Student”. You can act as a
student in the course by selecting “Student view” in the upper right corner. Select “Leave
student view” when you are going back as a teacher.

Discussions
Teacher role:
 Create a Discussion in one of the modules
o Add a description or a question (you can also add image or video)
o Allow “liking”
o Set a deadline by selecting “Add to student to-do”
o Save & Publish
o Subscribe to the discussion (= receive notifications when students reply and
make comments)
Student role:
 Find the Discussion (in Modules or Discussions in the course navigation)
o Create a post by selecting Reply
o “Like” and reply to other posts or your own post
o Subscribe to the discussion to receive notifications

Announcements
Teacher role:
 Create an Announcement
o Add text and a link to one of the modules or pages in the course
o Allow students to comment your message

Student role:
 Find and read the announcement
 Reply to the announcement – ask a question
Teacher role:
 Reply to the student`s question

 Individual work – use your actual notes and create a “plan” for your lesson(s)
o Theory: how should the theory be presented – What sholud the students
experience?
o Student activities: which activities? When? How? Why?
 Present your reasoning to the group in Canvas.
 Comment on one of your group members plans.

How to get access to VID’s Canvas
Our learning platform Canvas is set up in Norwegian and thus the emails going out from the
system are in Norwegian as well. This document will guide English-speakers through the
process of getting access.

Setting up a new user account (brukerkonto):


You will receive an email from the Canvas system where you are asked to finish the
registration process.
The email looks like this:

Click on the link to finish the registration process.


The next page looks like this:

To set up your use-account we need some more information:
Log in:
Password:
Timezone:

Fill in the preferred password. Minimum 8 characters, numbers and signs (for ex !)
You should now have access to Canvas.

Change language
The next job is to change from Norwegian to your preferred language. If you struggle with
this part – let me know and I will assist- you. Follow these steps:

 Click Konto > Innstillinger > Rediger innstillinger

 Select language under Språk as shown in the screenshot below.


 Click Oppdater innstillinger to save the changes.
How to log in
After the process of completing the registration process you will end up at the Dashboard.
Here you will find your courses when they are ready.
Log in to Canvas: https://www.vid.no/en/e-learning/canvas/
Choose “Alternative login”

Username: your email address
