The Swiss-born Alexandre Yersin died in Nha Trang, Vietnam, at the age of 80. He was born in 1863. He
came from a French family. As a doctor, he helped the Vietnamese people and advanced medical science.
Yersin departed from Europe in 1890 to explore the Indochina region while working as a doctor on a ship. He
dealt with an infectious sickness in Hong Kong in 1894. Then, he found the disease-causing bacteria and
prevented the deaths of millions of people.
A year down the road, Yersin set up a shop in Nha Trang, Vietnam, to make serums to treat sickness in
both humans and cattle. He planted coffee, rice, and corn in an effort to pay for the lab, and he brought the
rubber tree to Indochina. It evolved into a Parisian outpost of the Pasteur Institute over time.
He was a resident in Ha Noi from 1902 to 1904 and was instrumental in the founding of Ha Noi Medical
University. More than that, he was the school's first director of medical affairs. His 1920 medication was the
first of its kind to effectively cure and prevent malaria in the area.
His Nha Trang residence is now the Yersin Museum. His name lives on at Yersin University in Da Lat.
