3. Abstraction
A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to
show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some
examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to."
Uses of Prepositions
● They are used to show the direction of something.
● They can refer to the time of something happening.
● They can be used to denote the position or location of an object in the sentence.
TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS
● Prepositions of Time – used to show when something is happening. A preposition of
time is a preposition used to indicate when a particular action takes place. The most
common prepositions of time are at, in and on.
Preposition Expressing One Point in Time
AT - The preposition ‘at’ is used to refer to a specific time.
ON - is used to refer to a particular day or date.
IN - refers to a border time frame, such as a month or a year, a decade, etc.
For example:
● We will be meeting on Friday. (on, at, in)
● The party starts at 10:30.
● They moved to the U.S. in 2019.
Preposition Expressing Extended Time
Since - Expresses an action or state that was started and is still happening.
Ex. He has been working on it since last year.
She has lived here since 1988.
For - Expresses the duration of an action or event.
Ex. I will be gone for a day.
She was sick for a week.
From & To/Until - Expresses the beginning and end of a period of time.
Ex. I will be here from Monday to Friday.
My office hours are from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
During - Expresses a period of time over which an action occurs.
Ex. I read a book during my lunch break.
Owls sleep during the day.
Within - Used to show something will take place before a certain time.
Ex. He will graduate within a year of entering the program. (No later than one year from his
entry.)
I will be there within 30 minutes
● Prepositions of Place – indicate the place or position of something.
List of Prepositions of Place
On, In, At, Under, Below, Above, Over, Beside, Next to, Near, By, Between, Among, Inside,
Outside, Behind, In front of, Across from, Opposite, Beyond
Use "in" to describe something that is inside an enclosed space. For example, "The cat is in
the box."
Use "on" to describe something that is in contact with a surface. For example, "The book is
on the table."
Use "under" to describe something that is below or beneath another object. For example,
"The cat is under the bed."
Use "above" to describe something that is higher than another object. For example, "The
bird is above the tree."
Use "beside" to describe something that is next to or beside another object. For example,
"The car is beside the house."
Use "near" to describe something that is close to another object. For example, “The store is
near the park.”

- Preposition Scavenger Hunt Story
- Direction: The class will be divided into five groups. Each group will create a short story that
uses various types of prepositions. Create a story about a day in the life of a high school
student. Underline the prepositions used in the sentences and label its type.
- Put it in a 1 whole sheet of paper and write the names of your members.
