India is a vast country in South Asia, the 7th largest by land area. It is divided into 28
states and 8 union territories, each with its own capital city. The states and union
territories are further subdivided into districts. New Delhi, located in the National
Capital Territory of Delhi, serves as the administrative, political, and cultural capital
of India.

In 1956, India underwent a reorganization of its states based on linguistic


demographics. Today, the nation comprises 28 states and 8 Union Territories,
featuring around 400 cities. Among these, eight major metropolitan cities stand out:
Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and
Pune. The Prime Minister has launched an initiative to create 100 smart cities across
India, with Indore being honoured as the Smart City for four consecutive years.

The capital of India is New Delhi, which is a union territory. The other union territories
are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman
