READING COMPREHENSION
When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually
news. Rather, it is an ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that
hardly anybody pays heed to them. However, when the Lascaux cave complex was
discovered in 1940, the world was amazed. Painted directly on its walls were
hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The scenes
show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds
Page 10
and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far
outnumbering all other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult
task. They did not limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their
painting materials to spaces that required climbing steep walls or crawling into
narrow passages in the Lascaux complex.
Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of
water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the
Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images
inside. Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have
destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely
recognizable. To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23
years after it was discovered.
1. Which title best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A. Wild Animals in Art B. Hidden Prehistoric Paintings
C. Exploring Caves Respectfully D. Determining the Age of French Caves
2. In line 2, the words “pays heed to” mostly means _______.
A. discovers B. watches C. notices D. buys
3. According to the passage, which animals appear most often on the cave walls?
A. Birds B. Bison C. Horses D. Wild cats
4. In paragraph 2, the word “They” refers to _______.
A. walls B. artists C. animals D. materials
5. According to the passage, all of the following have caused damage to the paintings
EXCEPT ______________.
A. temperature changes B. air movement
C. water D. artificial light

Life in cities can be very (1) ________ from how it is today. Energy, especially

have just one centre where everyone goes to work and shop. (2) ________, we’ll
probably see cities with many different centres. There is a fair chance (3)_______
cities will develop for themselves some kind of local energy sources. Along with
inexpensive gadgetry, these kinds of energy will soon enable cities to become
smarter, more suitable and more self-reliant.
Cities near the sea will probably ___(4)____ some extra problems. As temperatures
around the world go up, sea levels will rise and many places will have problems in
flooding. Some cities will be OK, some may even find that the change in the climate
is good for them, but _______cities will need helps. We really need to start planning

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training
program. Such programs offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience. Programs usually
last between two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as practical elements. You will spend
one or two days a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire the theoretical
knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent at a company. There you
get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for example by learning to operate machinery. You will get

Page 17
to know what your company does, learn how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after
completing your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the time you have
completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also have hands-on
experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognized training programs in Germany, so chances are
good that one of them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which one that might be by visiting one of
the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organized in many German cities at different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training program are very good.
This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around two thirds of all
students leaving school go on to start a vocational training program.

You will get
to know what your company does, learn how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after
completing your training.

READING
Since the world has become industrialized, there has been an increase in the number
of animal species that have either become extinct or have neared extinction. Bengal tigers,
for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast numbers, now number only about
2,300, and by 5 the year 2025 their population is estimated to be down to zero. What
is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused
almost entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not interested in material
gain but in personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is part 10 of
what is causing the problem of extinction. Animals like the Bengal tiger, as well as other
endangered species, are a valuable part of the world's ecosystem. International laws
protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival, and the survival of our
planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways.
Some countries, in order to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land
to animal reserves. They then charge admission to help defray the costs of maintaining the
parks, and they often must also depend on world organizations for support. With the money
they get, they can invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals. Another solution
that is an attempt to stem the tide of animal extinction is an international boycott of
products made from endangered species. This seems fairly effective, but it will not, by
itself, prevent animals from being hunted and killed.
