1. SCOPE
This standard defines the minimum requirements for the procurement, manufacture, testing,
inspection, preparation for shipment and documentation of piping made of carbon, austenitic
stainless steels, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6Mo, Copper-Nickel and Titanium alloys.
This standard applies to piping scope of work. Components shall be in conformance with
ASME B31.3 code, their relevant standards and local regulations if any.
This standard applies to the materials as defined by SD-NOC-PVV-112.
The standard shall be read in conjunction with:
 SD-NOC-PVV-612 that stipulates additional requirements for pipes used in sour service,
 SD-NOC-PVV-614 that stipulates additional requirements for pipes made of duplex and
super duplex material,
 SD-NOC-PVV-615 that stipulates additional requirements for pipes made of super
austenitic (6Mo type) material,
 SD-NOC-PVV-616 that stipulates additional requirements for welding of Titanium
materials,
 SD-NOC-PVV-620 that stipulates additional requirements for pipes made of copper-nickel
material.
This standard does not apply to pipes made of plastic materials.
The present standard is designed to allow the use of individual Material Data Sheet (MDS) for
procurement and manufacturing stage. The MDSs identify additional requirements deemed
necessary by Company in order for the materials to meet their intended life of service. The
MDSs are listed and detailed in Appendix 1.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The reference documents listed below form an integral part of this document.
Unless otherwise indicated, the applicable version of these documents, including relevant
appendices and supplements, is the latest revision published.
For the Material Data Sheets in Appendix 1, the applicable version of these documents,
including relevant appendices and supplements, is the latest revision published.
Any divergence between any of the contractual reference documents and this standard must be
reported to Company for decision. In such a case, and unless otherwise agreed or decided by
Company, it is understood that the most stringent requirement shall apply.
Exceptions to, or deviations from, this standard are not permitted unless previously accepted in
writing by Company. For this purpose, Manufacturer's or Reseller’s requests for substitution or
change of any kind shall be completed with all pertinent information required for Company
assessment under a specific deviation request. In case of approval, such approval shall be valid
only for a specific case and shall not be construed as having general validity for other
applications.

3. DEFINITIONS / ABBREVIATIONS
3.1 Definitions
Company: North Oil Company, also referred to as NOC
Design Minimum Temperature: Lowest component temperature expected in service. This
temperature may establish special design requirements and material qualification requirements.
Cryogenic service: Service with design minimum temperature below minus 46°C and
continuous operating service temperature below minus 41°C.
Buyer: Natural person or legal entity that establishes the order and purchases the equipment
covered by the standard herein. This standard is an integral part of the order.
Inspection Body: Organization independent from Manufacturer, designated by Buyer and
responsible for monitoring the equipment manufacture from the reception of the raw materials to
the delivery of the piping or equipment.
Inspection Body shall insure that the following are respected:
 The regulations when they are applicable to the equipment concerned by the standard
herein,
 The technical requirements in the Buyer’s order.
The type, number and distribution of the documents to be compiled by Inspection Body shall be
defined in the contract binding Company or the Engineering Company.
Inspection Body can be Company or the Engineering Company.
Engineering Company: Natural person or legal entity who carries out the services
corresponding to the design and supply of the equipment covered by the standard herein and in
particular collects or establishes the data allowing Manufacturer to size the equipment so that it
can satisfy the process function for which it is destined.
Manufacturer: Manufacturer has the responsibility of complying with all of the applicable
requirements and assuring that all work done by others also complies.
Reseller / Stockist: The firm that acts as an intermediary supplier between Manufacturer and
Buyer but does not itself carry out manufacturing operations.

4. SOURCING OF MATERIALS
Materials can be supplied from stocks from a Reseller or can also be manufactured for and
supplied from a specific order directly from Manufacturer(s) or through a Reseller.
The following shall be met as a minimum:
 The list of potential Resellers shall have the prior approval of Company,
 The list of proposed Manufacturers shall be within the Company referenced list. If not, the
list of Manufacturer shall be submitted to Company for technical assessment and approval
prior to order: see SD-NOC-PVV-951. As a minimum to be communicated to Company:
- Previous experience list,
- Previous base material data if required by Company,
- Fabrication procedure,
- Inspection/QAQC procedures,
- Raw material manufacturers list,
- Sub-suppliers list (for welding or other specific activity).
 Reseller or Manufacturer shall ensure that the testing and related acceptance
requirements stated in this standard are fulfilled: any non-compliance shall be immediately
reported to Company for further evaluation.
 The certificates made by Reseller are not acceptable. However, Reseller is allowed to
perform additional testing on the project materials in order to meet the requirements of this
standard.
In addition, Company or Buyer reserves the right to require any counter-analysis or confirmatory
tests (chemical analysis, mechanical tests, thickness measurements, NDT, etc.) and to
undertake a technical assessment. In case of failure, the complete supply will be suspended
until further investigation is performed: this can lead to the replacement of the supply, complete
or partial.

5. MATERIALS
Manufacturer or Reseller shall meet requirement of the relevant Material Data Sheet(s) given in
Appendix 1.
Any deviation shall be declared to and approved by Company before purchase order be placed,
and should there be any change of proposed material after purchase order be placed then any
new deviation shall be reported to and approved by Company at the soonest and in any way
prior to shipment.

5.1 Copper-Nickel Pipes


Copper-Nickel pipes shall be procured according to SD-NOC-PVV-620.

5.2 Austenitic-Ferritic Stainless Pipes


Pipes shall also comply with SD-NOC-PVV-614 in addition to present standard.

5.3 Galvanized Pipes


Galvanized pipes shall be Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG) in accordance with ASTM A153/A153M;
electrodeposited coating of zinc is not acceptable.

6. SUBSTITUTION OF MATERIAL
Any substitution of material by a material considered as “equivalent” by Reseller or
Manufacturer shall require the prior approval by Company.

7. Dimensions
7.1 Schedule
Pipes schedules shall be as specified in SD-NOC-PVV-112.

7.2 Length
Except for Cu-Ni pipe, the recommended pipe lengths is minimum 5.33 m (17.5 ft.).
Circular weld jointers to attain the minimum allowable length is not allowed.

7.3 Straightness
For pipes as per ASTM standard specification, in case no straightness tolerances are specified,
the ones defined by API SPEC 5L shall be applied.

8. ENDS
8.1 Bevel ends
Pipes ends (except threaded end) are preferably delivered with ends bevel as per
ASME B16.25.

8.2 Threaded ends


The ends of galvanized steel pipes up to NPS 2 are preferably threaded, and in accordance
with ASME B1.20.1. The thread end can be substituted with plain end if indicated in SD-NOC-
PVV-112.
Threads of galvanized pipes shall be free of galvanizing.

9. MANUFACTURE AND TESTING


9.1 General
All pipe manufacturing stages shall be performed by Manufacturer in its qualified mill.
Girth butt-welds are not allowed.
All pipes shall be free from bulges, dents, flat area, leaks, and cracks, welding defects or visual
laminations.

9.2 Welded Pipes


Welded pipes limitations shall comply with SD-NOC-PVV-112 requirements.
WPS (pre-qualified or newly proposed) and supporting WPQR shall be communicated to
Company for review no more than two weeks after placement of Purchase Order.
WPS and WPQR, as well as welders qualification, shall comply with SD-NOC-PVV-611 and
additional Company standard related to the considered material.
The inside reinforcement of the weld must be ground-off at each end of the longitudinally-
welded pipe. This machining shall be done over a length of 10 cm and must leave a gradual
transition.

9.3 Bevels
Any beveling of the ends of the pipes shall be performed by machine or by mechanized flame or
plasma cutting. The process used shall produce clean, square, burr-free bevel cuts.
Wherever flame or plasma cutting is employed, all oxides and traces of previously melted metal
shall be removed by grinding or machining.
For corrosion resistant alloy pipes, flame cutting is not permitted: mechanized plasma cutting is
acceptable.

9.4 NDT
For welded pipes, the NDT procedures and acceptance criteria shall be compliant to SD-NOC-
PVV-611 and additional Company standard related to the considered material.

9.5 PMI
PMI on CRA materials shall be performed as per API RP 578 and on 100% of pipes. And for
welded CRA pipes, PMI shall also be performed on cap area, and root area when accessible.
PMI shall be performed by the party supplying the items to the Buyer. PMI shall be part of final
inspection before packing. The PMI report as a minimum shall include purchase order number,
item number, heat number, quantity and confirmation of compliance to required chemical
composition.

9.6 Mechanical Testing

Reseller or Manufacturer shall communicate to Company the detailed sketch with location of
test sampling and size and condition of the tested sample, when requested by Company.
The frequency and program of Production Testing (if any) shall be agreed at bid stage. It shall
as a minimum be compliant with applicable ASTM standards.
Typically, the minimum quantity of production tests should be one test for fifty pipes or one test
for 250 m cumulative length of pipes produced.

9.7 Repairs of Defects


Repair on parent material by welding is not acceptable.
Only repair on welds can be accepted, when covered by a repair WPS approved by Company.

10. CLEANING
All stainless steel pipes (austenitic, super-austenitic, duplex, super-duplex) and titanium pipes
shall be pickled and passivated.

11. INSPECTION
11.1 General Quality Requirements
Manufacturer shall ensure material traceability recording from raw material up to final product.
To this extent, individual identification for each pipe is required:
- the original markings shall be easily visible on products,
- all pipes shall be fully traceable and correctly identified, particularly to the heat and test
numbers of the matching certificates.
Manufacturer shall ensure radiographic examination traceability, and for welded pipes shall
ensure that RT report is clearly stating that the radiographic examination had been performed
after final heat treatment.
Products shall be guaranteed by an inspection certificate (conformity, material test, etc.). If
Manufacturer does not have the necessary means of examination, these tests may be
subcontracted at a place approved by Company.
Quality control activities include dimensional checks and records of each pipe.

11.2 Quality Control before Shipment


Quality control inspection shall be conducted by the Reseller or Manufacturer at its workshop or
mill so as to make sure of the proper execution of the order, before shipment. It shall include at
the minimum:

- Visual inspection of each pipe (no physical damage, no oxidation, presence of


adequate bevel, etc),
- Confirmation of traceability of heat number of each pipe,
- Compliant marking for each pipe,
- Confirmation of compliance of each MTC to referred international standards and SD-
NOC-PVV-143.
Shipment of pipes, from stock or newly manufactured, will take place only after approval of the
MTCs.

11.3 Quality Control by Company


Minimum quality control requirements by Company have been specified in SD-NOC-PVV-951.

12. DOCUMENTATION
Manufacturer documentation shall be available in digital format unless otherwise specified.
The following documents shall be supplied to Company:
 Certificate of conformity to this standard,
 Material Test Certificate (MTC) compliant to applicable material datasheet, issued by
Manufacturer, and when pipe is supplied through Reseller such MTC shall be endorsed by
Reseller,
 For welded pipes, WPS and supporting detailed WPQR shall be communicated to
Company for approval no more than two weeks after placement of Purchase Order,
 PMI reports for CRA pipes,
 Any specific report (corrosion resistance, metallographic examination, NDT, pressure test,
etc) required by corresponding datasheet or called by Purchase Order.
 Inspection and Test Plan upon Company request.
At specific request from Company or Inspector, the following documentation shall also be
available for pipe base material, and weld area (if any):
 Original copy of MTC,
 Mother material certificates,
 Heat treatment records,
 Destructive and non-destructive examination tests reports,
 Manufacturer Workshop certificate (when applicable).

12.1 Certificate of Conformity


Manufacturer or Reseller shall submit certificate of conformity to this standard, the respective
MDSs and to the ASTM standards specified in the requisitions for pipes.

12.2 Material Certificates


The material certificates shall be of EN 10204 type 3.1, giving the results of the chemical
analysis and of the mechanical tests carried out in accordance with the requirements of the
reference codes and standards.

Material certificates EN 10204 type 3.1 of the mother material shall be provided in addition to
the type 3.1 material certificates of the finished products, if requested by Company.
The material certificates shall also include additional supplementary requirements or additional
tests, when they are indicated in the purchase order or datasheet.

12.3 Pressure Test and Nondestructive Electric Test Certificates


Manufacturer shall submit according to EN 10204 type 3.1 pressure test certificates or
EN 10204 type 3.1 nondestructive electric test certificates, when this alternative test is
authorized by the applicable Material Data Sheet of Appendix 1.

13. PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT


13.1 Marking
Marking shall only be made by the pipe Manufacturer itself.

13.1.1 Identification of Materials


The following information shall be marked by cold stamping on each length of pipe for NPS 2
and over, and on two labels attached to each bundle of pipes for pipes smaller than NPS 2:
 Manufacturer’s name and location
 Specification and grade of material
Dual certified materials shall be marked showing both grades (as example 316/316L)
 Heat number
 Batch number
 Nominal pipe size
 Pipe wall thickness or schedule number.
However, pipes less than 3 mm thick and Copper alloy pipes shall not be marked by stamping
but by etching.

13.1.2 Markings Specific to the Order


All lengths of pipes shall be identified by marking with color marks and code numbers as and if
specified in the order.

13.2 Protection

13.2.1 Carbon Steel Pipes


Threaded pipe ends shall be greased and protected by metallic female caps.
Beveled carbon steel pipe ends shall be protected by a peel-off varnish.
Pipe ends shall be protected by plastic caps.

13.2.2 CRA Pipes


During cleaning, transport, fabrication, testing and/or storage, all CRA steel pipes shall be fully
protected against carbon steel contamination and all CRA pipes shall be fully protected against
the risks of saline corrosion.
If coating is used to protect CRA pipes, it shall not:
 contain chlorides (>25 ppm) or other substances that might damage these pipes
 cover the bevels, if any,
 be detrimental to welding.

13.3 Packing
Sea-packing shall be detailed by appropriate purchasing specification.
For all pipes, the packing shall be water-proof. It shall meet the conditions of all stages of
transport (rail, road, air and sea).

Appendix 1 Material Data Sheets (MDSs)


The Material Data sheets shall be used as supplementary requirements to existing Material
Specifications (ASTM, etc.).
The MDSs reflect the additional requirements of Company imposed on Manufacturers and
Resellers in order to maintain a quality level that is consistent for the material being supplied.
The MDSs shall not be used as stand-alone documents for procuring and manufacturing of
pipes.

1) ASTM B861 pipes may be substituted by ASTM B862 pipes for NPS ≥ 4. Substitution of ASTM B861 by
ASTM B338 is subject to Company approval.
