LESSON 4: INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING IN THE VISUAL ARTS

I. Instructional Planning
Analyses:
a. Why do you think it’s important to have detailed plan when teaching art to
elementary grades? What might be the benefits of planning each lesson
thoroughly?
b. What challenges might you face when planning art lessons for elementary
students, and how can effective planning help overcome those challenges?

Abstraction:
A. Importance of Instructional Planning

 Having an instructional plan helps teachers stay on track with lesson and achieve
learning objectives.
 Teachers should follow the curriculum set by the school, however art involves a
lot of creativity and spontaneity.
 Following the lesson plan is important. But at the same time, keep your plans
flexible, leaving space for serendipity and unanticipated learning. (Douglas &
Jaquith, 2018)
 Planning helps manage time and resources and foresee different possibilities;
what will work and what will not.
 Planning the classroom setup and seating arrangement is also very important.
 In teaching art in schools, it is necessary to plan your lesson based on the
school’s program and curricular plan.
 For public schools, the learning competencies can be found in the DepEd K to 12
Curriculum Guide.

B. Classroom Management and School Situations
 Art can be challenging because it involves a lot of materials and hands-on
activities.

C. Things to Consider in Preparing an Instructional Plan

1. Know your students. Know their strengths, weaknesses, threats, and what
makes them excited.
2. Plan for student’s safety
3. Select your materials carefully. Consider the availability of resources.
4. Proper care for materials
5. Maximize workspace, venue, and water supply
6. Manage time wisely. Be prepared. Set a routine.
7. Begin with the end in mind. Afterworks: Postproduction.

Activity:
Create an infographic that highlights the key components necessary for
effectively teaching arts in elementary grade.

Mechanics:

 Review the diagram format with labeled sections: Learning Objectives,

Materials and Resources, Instructional Methods, Assessment, and
Benefits for students and Teachers.
 Illustrate you infographic in 1 long bond paper.
 Provide a brief description under each section. Make sure to:
a. Clearly explain the role of learning objectives in structuring art lesson.
b. List examples of materials and resources you would prepare for a
specific art activity.
c. Outline instructional methods that would help engage students in the
lesson.
 Ensure that your infographic is visually appealing, organized, and easy to
read.
 Use colors, icons, and layouts that make the information stand out.
 Be creative with the design, but maintain the clarity in delivering the key
points.
