1) What is your impression of Hiawatha in the myth?
My impression of Hiawatha is that he is a godlike figure that ended up united
the 5 nations as a peacemaker.
Can you relate Hiawatha to any other character in literature or history?
You can relate Hiawatha to Abraham Lincoln because He unified the
“Confederate States of America” and the United States of America.
2) A) What is the first tribe Hiawatha establishes? The first tribe that Hiawatha
establishes is Mohawk
b) How does the group of dissatisfied people cross the Mississippi?
The group of dissatisfied people cross the Mississippi by crossing a wild
grapevine that formed as a bridge to each bank.
c) According to Hiawatha, which group has the greatest orators? According
to Hiawatha, The Seneca is the group with the most talented orators.
d) What does Hiawatha refuse to do in the end? Hiawatha refuses to become
chief of the united tribes.
3) A) What do Hiawatha’s gifts to them suggest about the Five Nations? The gifts
suggest the each tribe have a special and vital role in the Five nations which
allows them to have a reason to Unite and benefit each other.
b) Why does Hiawatha want the Five nations to unite? Hiawatha wants all the
nations to unite to be a strong nation and be able to defend each other from
enemies.
c) Do you think it is right for Hiawatha to encourage unification? I believe it’s
right for Hiawatha to push unification because all the tribes would be much
stronger if they were at peace and worked alongside each other in unity.
4) A) Why does Hiawatha choose to walk with a young girl as he leads the
people?
- Hiawatha chooses to walk with the young girl as a symbol of peace and trust
to the other tribes.
b) What attitude does Hiawatha show towards women and girls?
- Hiawatha treats women as important as the men in tribe like trusting them
with the duty of being peacemakers and clan mothers.
c) What do Hiawatha’s attitude towards girls and women suggest about the
role of women in Iroquois society?
- Hiawatha’s attitude to the women shows that he believes they play a
significant role in their society.
5) A) How does Hiawatha seem to feel about the people of the Five Nations?
- Hiawatha trusts and appreciates the tribe. He believes that they will prosper
and grow united as a nation.
B) Why do you think he takes human form and become the leader of the
Onondaga.
- I believe that the reason why Hiawatha takes a mortal form is because he
wants to influence the tribes directly and establish peace between all of
them.
c) Why do you think that Hiawatha turn down the request to be chief sachem
of the Iroquois? I believe that Hiawatha turned down the request to be chief
sachem so the tribe would not have to rely on his wisdom.
