1. Introduction: Tet, or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is the most significant
celebration in Vietnam. It marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the lunar
calendar.
2. Body
*When: Typically falling in late January or early February, Tet is a time for family
reunions, paying respects to ancestors, and setting intentions for the year ahead.
* Before Tet:
+ Before Tet, everyone will clean the house. Besides, the house should be
decorated with peach and kumquat trees.
+ Preparing traditional foods, such as bánh chưng or bánh tét (sticky rice cakes).
+ Buying kumquat trees, peach blossoms, and red envelopes for Tet festivities.
*Tet’s activities:
+ Each family will celebrate the end of the year and celebrate New Year's Eve to
witness the transition between the old year and the new year, praying for good
luck.
-Family Reunions
+ Families gather to share meals, reminisce, and celebrate together.
+ Elders offer blessings, and children receive lì xì (lucky money in red envelopes).
+Visiting ancestral graves and offering incense to honor deceased relatives.
+ Setting up altars with offerings such as fruits, rice, and tea.
* Food at Tet:
- Tet is celebrated with an array of traditional dishes that reflect cultural
significance and family unity. Staples include bánh chưng and bánh tét,
symbolizing the Earth and sky, alongside savory dishes like pickled vegetables,
boiled chicken, and giò lụa (Vietnamese pork sausage). These delicacies embody
gratitude, prosperity, and togetherness.
