CITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

In the Spanish town of Llanera, an 1empty church has

1 2unique
been turned into a skatepark. Inside,

3colourful murals have given it a 4vibrant atmosphere.

A New York City community group has 5transformed

2
an 6elevated railway line into an 7urban oasis. The

High Line is now a 8pedestrian walkway through Manhattan

filled with trees and plants.

In Paris, France, thousands of 9roller skaters take

3 10weekly
to the streets on Friday nights for the

Pari Roller event. Streets in the city centre are closed to

heavy traffic so that skaters can speed around in safety.

In Croatia, they have found a great new use for

11ancient 12ruins.
4
some In the summer, the Pula

Arena 13amphitheatre, built by the Romans over 2,000 years

ago, is used as an open-air cinema, and sometimes it even

becomes a sports stadium.

In Hồ Chí Minh City, Việt Nam, Suối Tiên 14Amusement Park, which used to be a small
5 15forestry farm raising livestock and growing

fruit trees, is now a 16fantastic destination for locals

and tourists alike. The park offers a wide range of

17leisure facilities, from 18thrilling rides and water

activities to 19botanical gardens and cultural

20exhibits.

In Germany, the Duisburg Landscape Park

6
transformed an old 21industrial site into a beautiful

green space. The original factory structures are now used

as diving pools and music venues.

A Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium is a sports stadium in London, England.

It opened in 2007 and was built to replace the original

Wembley Stadium, which was built in 1923. With a capacity

of 90,000, it’s the second largest stadium in Europe.

The 1distinctive features of the stadium are its 2partially

3retractable roof and the arch, which is 133 metres high and

315 metres wide. Wembley Stadium hosts the matches of the

English national football team

as well as the 4finals of several important football 5competitions,

such as the FA cup and the UEFA 6Champions League. This stadium

is also a concert venue for many well-known 7musicians.

B London for sports fans

London is such an interesting destination with lots of sports events that as a sports fan, there’s

no reason to get 8bored. Here’s my top 9selection.

Emirates Stadium

I’m not an Arsenal fan myself, but this is one of England’s top

football stadiums. Check out the murals outside, which

celebrate some of the Gunners’ most 10legendary players.

The Undercroft

This skatepark next to the River Thames has been the

heart of Britain’s skateboarding community for over

forty years. It’s so popular that you can see some of the

most 11talented skaters and BMXers in the country there.

Wembley Stadium

This is the biggest stadium in the UK, and in my opinion, it’s the

best! You can see the famous arch from miles away; it’s taller

than the London Eye. The stadium has such a 12powerful sound

system that the music can be heard clearly from every corner.

Wimbledon

Lots of top tennis stars have played on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, 13including the Williams sisters,

Federer and Nadal. It’s the only Grand Slam tournament on grass, so Wimbledon has its own

hawk, Rufus, to 14scare away the pigeons. The grass on

Wimbledon’s Center Court is maintained so carefully that

it’s often considered the best grass court in the world. While

you’re here, try the 15classic dish – strawberries and cream.

Uncovering History
From time to time, archeologists discover something which changes our view of human history. A good
example is the ancient temple at Göbekli Tepe, in Turkey, which dates from about 10,000 BC. That's about 6,000
years older than any other temple in the world.
"What we've found at Göbekli Tepe completely changes our view of the people that were living here,'
explains local archeologist, Professor Emine Meltem Kahraman. 'We thought they were simple hunters who moved
from place to place. Now we know that big communities lived and farmed here, sharing their culture and beliefs -
in fact, this may be the place where farming began.'
New discoveries have also made us think again about the history of North America. Most people agree that
the first humans in North America were Asian hunters who reached North America about 16,000 years ago, after
they had walked across frozen land and ice from Siberia. But who came next?
For a long time, people believed that the first Europeans in North America arrived after Columbus had crossed
the Atlantic in 1492. That view changed after the discovery of a Viking camp at L'Anse aux Meadows, in Canada,
which dated from 1,000 AD.
'Maybe the Vikings visited North America many times,' Professor Kahraman explains. 'But others probably
visited America before Columbus.'
Did ancient traders in tiny open boats regularly cross the biggest ocean on Earth? It's hard to imagine, but
the evidence is growing stronger. There are even words which are similar in Polynesian and Native American
languages. These new discoveries around the world are changing history books and our beliefs.
1 The first humans in North America are believed to have arrived from Europe.
2 Professor Kahraman believes that the Vikings were the first Europeans to visit North America.
3 The evidence of ancient trade routes suggests that small boats crossed the Atlantic Ocean regularly.
4 The people who built Göbekli Tepe were nomadic, moving frequently between different places.
5 According to the text, how has the temple at Göbekli Tepe changed our view of history?
A It shows that people were hunting in the area 10,000 years ago.
B It means that big groups of people stayed in the same area for a long time.
C It shows that people knew how to build before this time.
D It shows that people knew how to build after this time.
6 Choose the best alternative title for the article.
A The world's most important ancient places
B New ancient discoveries change our understanding
C The search for clues about the past
D Columbus’ adventure to America

UNIT 8 – SCARY FRIENDS PLUS

SCREAM MACHINES – Scary or fun?

Why do millions of people love roller coasters? The

answer is that people love feeling afraid when they

know they’re in no real 2danger. But Jane Clark has

never been on a roller coaster. She is frightened of

3heights and speed. ‘It’s 4ridiculous. All my friends

have ridden on roller coasters, and they love it,’ says Jane. ‘I’ve always wanted to try, but I’ve

never been 5brave enough.’ Well, Jane has decided that today this is going to change. She has

bought a ticket for Oblivion and her friends are here to support her. Her heart is beating and she

can’t speak as she gets in. Then they’re off. People are screaming because they’re scared, or is it

because they’re excited? She screams, too.

Three minutes later, it’s all over. Jane is happy.

She’s done it! She’s been on her first roller

coaster. ‘Words can’t describe it!’ she says.

READING 1 - UNIT 8
UNIT 8 – SCARY FRIENDS PLUS

But for some people, roller coaster 6phobia never goes

away. Psychologist Frank Farley believes that there are

two types of people when it comes to fear and 7risk.

Some people prefer the quiet life. For others, danger

and excitement make them feel 8alive. Their brains

produce ‘feel-good’ chemicals in risky situations, and they love 9extreme sports like climbing or

10paragliding. Roller coasters are great for these people because they can get the excitement

without the danger. The chance of a 11fatal accident is one in 50 billion. Driving to the amusement

park is more dangerous than riding on a ‘scream machine’!

but if you haven't got a phobia, you won't understand. I have got a phobia - arachnophobia.
Two months ago, I went with my mum to see a (3) ______ called Mark Tanner. Mark has helped a lot of patients
with phobias. Some patients had 'normal' phobias, like being frightened of dogs, or snakes, or the dark. Some
patients had really weird ones, like phobias of bananas, or eating in public. He's helped a girl with a phobia of school
as well. She hasn't been at school this year! I've seen the specialist a few times and he's been really helpful. First,
we looked at photos of spiders, and then we watched spiders on a DVD. Next, he gave (4) ______ spiders to my

the correct answers (A, B, C or D) for questions 5 and 6.
Stressed Out? Take Control
We all know how it feels to get angry. Sometimes anger is mild, when you're just irritated with someone. But at
other times, anger can be more extreme, with explosive rages. You start to shout and throw things around. You
lose control. Your blood pressure increases, your heart races and you can't think about anything else. But what
exactly is anger? Anger is a normal response to a situation where you feel you are being attacked, treated unfairly,
let down by others, hurt or rejected. Anger can help you to defend yourself, deal with the problem and let others
know how you feel. But anger can also cause problems. If you always lose control, people might start to avoid you.
Friends and colleagues may be afraid of your temper and leave you alone. Getting angry might make you feel better,
giving you energy and making you feel like you're in control. But it might also leave you feeling hurt and
misunderstood. Also, getting angry doesn't usually solve the problem. So, what can you do about your anger?
1 Work out what makes you angry - You need to understand what situations make you angry. Is it when people
make comments about your work or criticise you? Is it that you get angry when you're frustrated and can't do the
things you want? Do you get angry when you're tired? Understanding what makes you angry can help you to deal
with the problem.
2 Understand the signals - Learn to identify the signs that you're getting angry. Do you start to shout and feel
tense? Do you pace about the room? You need to recognise your own signals before you can change your
behaviour.
3 Take control of your mind and body - Try taking a step back and distancing yourself from the situation, both
physically and emotionally. Check your breathing and take some deep breaths to slow you down and calm your

51
heartbeat. Ask yourself, 'Am I overacting?', 'Am I listening to what people are saying?' Can you find a way to be
assertive, rather than aggressive? Try to speak calmly, rather than shout. Try the 'Is it worth it?' test. Ask yourself,
'Will it really matter in one month, one year?' Do some physical exercise, like going for a run or a swim. Or try some
meditation or listen to music. Do whatever that helps to calm you down.
1 You often show your anger when you feel you are treated fairly.
2 Your anger can cause people around you to leave you alone.
3 You should understand the signals of your anger in order to try shouting and feeling tense.
4 You can control your anger by trying composing music.
5 The following things are the benefits of anger EXCEPT?
A making you feel better
B making you feel that you can control your feelings
C helping you solve the problem
D giving you energy
6 The word 'it' in paragraph 2 refers to ______.
A your temper B your anger C your energy D your problem
