DEPARTMENT OF DIETETICS

Instructions to follow for Renal Patients


Foods to be avoided
 High salty food like Pickle, Dry fish, Soup cubes, Ready to cook Soup sachets, Marmite and
 Other preserved Food : eg Sausages, Bacon, Ham, Jadi
 Canned food products like Canned fish, Canned meat, Canned vegetables, Canned fruits
 Salty biscuits and nuts, pop corn
 Unhealthy /Junk Food : eg Pizza, Burgers, Potato chips
 Aerated beverages (Fizzy drinks)
 Malted drinks
 Cocoa and Cocoa based products Eg. Chocolate,
 Products associate with Baking powder and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
 Sauces and Chutneys
 Sweet desserts: eg. Pudding, Ice-cream, Watalappan, Custard
 Sugar, Treacle ,Honey, Jaggery
 Toffee, Sweet biscuits, jam Jelly, Syrup
 Wheat flour based products eg: Buns, Cakes, Pastry, Rolls
 Corn flour, Custard powder
 Dates, Plums, Prunes,Rasins,Sultana
 Cereals with bran ( eg.Nivudu Rice)
 Ghee, Margerine,. Cheese
 Red Meat like Beef, Pork, Liver
 Unhealthy /Junk Food : eg Pittza, Burgers, Potato chips,
 Alcohol

 Protein Requirement
Protein rich food should be restricted. If on dialysis protein should not be restricted.(Get the
advice from your Doctor /Dietician)

If Potassium levels are high , consume limited quantities of Milk , Pulses (eg: Cowpea,
Gram, Green gram, Dhal)

 Vegetables which contain less potassium can be taken – (about 1 ½ t.cup per day)
Eg: Snake Guard (Pathola) , Ridge Guard (Wetakolu), Cucumber , Bell pepper, Salad leaves, Knol
khol, Puhul, Leaks white stem , cabbage, wing beans, brinjals,Asparagus,corn etc..
Consume properly cooked vegetables.

 Vegetables which contain medium levels of potassium can be taken – (about ½ t.cup per
day) – eg. Bitter gourd, Beans , Long beans, Ladies fingers, Turnip, thalanabatu
(boiled and discard water)

 If Potassium levels are high, following vegetables should be avoided.


Leafy Vegetables like Gotukola, Mukunuwenna, Kathurumurunga , Kankun, Spinach and
Potato, sweet potato, Tomato, manioc, Jack seeds, drumsticks, Lotus root ,Mushroom etc.

 If Diabetic
take less ,
Beet Root , Pumpkin (Starchy vegetables not more than ½ a cup per day) and
Starchy Food like Potato, Manioc, Sweet Potato, Breadfruit, Jack

 Fruits can be taken ( Low Potassium Fruits) –Without peel


Eg: Guava , Pears , apple (Medium size ), Strawberries (3-4 Nos), Thin slice of Pineapple 01
once a week, Cranberries, Mangosteen, Jambu, Ramutan, Sapathilla, Papaya (100g)
Don`t take pineapples apathilla,rambutan, mangusteen frequently if blood sugar levels are
high.

 Fruits to be avoided (If potassium levels are high, avoid following potassium rich fruits):
Eg: Banana, Avocado, Orange, Mango, King Coconut , pomegranate, dried fruits

Things to Consider
 Do not take vegetable soups and fruit juices.
 Take low salt diet
 Consumption of fruits - Check the list of fruits above suitable to consume
 Milk or Milk products should not exceed 300 ml pert day. (eg: 1 cup of milk)
 Use Olive oil-salad dressings/ coconut oil when cooking (2-3 tsp per day)
 Have your three main meals on time in small portions, do not skip meals
 Fluid intake per day depends on urine out put. Please follow the doctor’s advice.
