Questions 26–30
Read the text below and the questions on the opposite page.
For each question, circle the correct letter: A, B or C.
Wimbledon ballboy
Fourteen-year-old Ben Harrison is a ‘ballboy’ at Wimbledon, an international
tennis competition in London. He picks up balls during matches and returns
them to players.
Last year, Ben and his brother were playing with a ball outside their home. The
man living next door saw how well Ben played and suggested that he should
think about being a ballboy. The next day, Ben asked his sports teacher, Mrs
Jones, about it and she gave him some information.
Every year, Mrs Jones sends names of possible ballboys and ballgirls to the
Wimbledon organisers. Because his house is near Wimbledon, Ben often
goes to matches there. He is also excellent at cricket and rugby, and that’s
why she put his name on the list. Ben really loves tennis so he was very
happy about that.
‘I enjoyed the six months of training I had to do to become a ballboy,’ says
Ben. ‘I had to show that I was very fit and didn’t get tired easily, and then that I
was good at throwing and catching a ball. But before I could even do the
training, I had to take a written test about tennis.’
‘At Wimbledon, many tennis stars would like you to throw them balls in a
special way, and you mustn’t forget how to do that. That can be hard. During
matches, you have to stand up straight and keep still for ages, then suddenly
move really fast to catch the balls. I know it sounds difficult – actually, I can do
that OK.’
‘It’s great being part of a competition that’s so well known. But what’s really
fantastic is working close to top players from around the world and getting to
know them. And it’s on TV in many different countries, which is quite exciting
too.’
