Good day everyone, hoping that this day finds you well.
Since 2025 election is coming up, my topic is about clean elections for better future
terminating vote buying.
Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray said, “The government has the power to change our lives, but we
have the power to change the government”
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairperson George Garcia said that more than 100
confirmed cases of election candidates engaged in vote buying ahead of the 2023 Barangay and
Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) elections, (Chi, 2023). Garcia said, “They should know that there are
candidates who attempt to buy votes because they are not well known and not supported. Therefore, we
should not allow them to have their way.”
This is one of the reasons why election candidates engaged in vote buying. and
politicians with this interest should never be in power.
Philippines has a democratic government, but where is democracy if those interest
manipulates people through money to have the greatest power?
Vote buying is still a rampant issue in our country; we cannot deny the fact that people
are tied and blinded when it comes with money or goods in exchange for their votes
without analyzing first the effects and consequences to our government that would later
affect its constituents. By terminating vote buying, we can ensure that the elections
truly reflect the will of the people, rather than the influence of those who can afford to
buy votes, and by that we are promoting democratic integrity and transparency.
I conducted some interviews with a couple of individuals to find out their
current opinion about the government and asked them, ‘What are your views
about our government today?’
Most of them thought that most political parties never keep their promises which were
made during elections and changes hardly ever take place. What caught the most
attention as well, though, is how situation of vote buying depicts the real character of
our government. This practice portrays not only the corruption, but also how the rulers
care for their influence and not so much about the improvements of the society.
In conclusion, vote-buying is a problem that harms the democratic process in the
Philippines. It takes away the voice of the people and lets money control elections. It
leads to corruption and stops real progress in the country. As citizens, we have to reject
vote-buying and hold our leaders accountable. Elections should be choosing the best
leaders based on their promises, not money. A good fight against vote-buying will help
in establishing an effective government that serves the people and reflects what is
needed by them and hoped for in the future.
