Knit a braided cable band. Build a hat around it.


Instant gorgeous hat!

Large needles, thick yarn, it’s done in no time and it’s soft,
cuddly and toasty warm.

Materials: 1 - 100 gram skein of Cascade 128 Superwash


yarn. Pictured hat is color #867.
Size 10 needles any type for cable band,
size 10-1/2 both 16” circular and double
points for rest of hat, or size required to obtain
gauge. Cable needle.

Gauge: 7 stitches and 11 rows to 2” in stockinette on


US 10-1/2 needles - BE SURE TO CHECK GAUGE!

Using smaller needles, cast on 14 sts. Work cable band:

Row 1 and all WRONG SIDE rows: P2, K1, P8, K1, P2.

Row 2: K2, P1, K8, P1, K2.

Row 4: K2, P1, C4F*, C4B**, P1, K2.

Row 6: K2, P1, K8, P1, K2.

Row 8: K2, P1, C4F, C4B, P1, K2.

Rows 10 and 12: K2, P1, K8, P1, K2.

Row 14: K2, P1, C8B***, P1, K2.

Row 16: K2, P1, K8, P1, K2.

*C4F -- Slip 2 sts purl-wise to cable needle and hold sts in front of work, K2 from left
needle, K2 from cable needle.

**C4B -- Slip 2 sts purl-wise to cable needle and hold sts in back of work, K2 from left
needle, K2 from cable needle.

***C8B – Slip 4 sts purl-wise to cable needle and hold sts in back of work, K4 from left
needle, K4 from cable needle.

Repeat rows 1-16 5 more times, then repeat row 1. Band should measure between 19
and 20 inches long. If it is a little longer, don’t worry, if it is shorter work another row or
2 of rows 1 and 2 only. Bind off. Sew ends together to form a loop. Feel free to substitute
any other cable panel from any stitchionary.

With circular needle and right side facing, beginning at seam, pick up and knit 72 sts
along one edge of cable band. Knit even in the round until hat measures 5” from bottom
of cable band. Dec. for crown as follows:

[K7, K2tog] 8X, 64 sts.


Work 1 round even.
[K6, K2tog] 8X, 56 sts.
Work 1 round even.

Change to double point needles, dividing sts evenly.

[K5, K2tog] 8X, 48 sts.


Work 1 round even.
[K4, K2tog] 8X, 40 sts.
Work 1 round even.
[K3, K2tog] 8X. 32 sts.
Work 1 round even.
[K2, K2tog] 8X, 24 sts.
[K1, K2tog] 8X, 16 sts.
K2tog 8X., 8 sts.

Cut yarn leaving about a 9” tail. Thread yarn onto tapestry needle, pass it through the
8 sts and pull tail tight. Now pick up and knit 72 stitches on the other side of the cable
band and work 7-8 rows of K2, P2 ribbing, or about 1-1/2 to 2 inches. Bind off loosely.
Weave in all ends.
