Born in 1881, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is a legendary figure in Turkish history. Atatürk,
who jumped to prominence in the difficult times after World War I, was crucial in
determining Turkey's future. Notable for his commanding presence in the Gallipoli
Campaign and later acclaimed as the mastermind behind the Turkish War of
Independence, Atatürk guided his country to a victory over those in power and built the
Republic of Turkey in 1923.

In his capacity as Turkey's first president, Atatürk began on an uncertain mission to


modernize and secularize the country. His changes covered a wide range of topics in
Turkish society. He was the soul of behind the wide use of the Latin alphabet, which
replaced the old Arabic script and improved accessibility for education and
communication. Atatürk promoted women's emancipation by giving them equal rights
and promoting their involvement in public life. He also put policies into place to keep
religion and the state apart and create a secular framework for governance.
