Most of the people in kiwoko village are crop farmers. Much of the farming is done during
rainy seasons in order to maximize crop yields during times of harvest. However, during dry
seasons, most of fruit trees in this village shed off their leaves and crops in the garden wilt
which results into decrease in crop production. This has greatly affected these farmers causing
them to make a lot of losses during such seasons.

Okello was one of the students found taking marijuana in dormitory last night. He was
suspended from Bukata senior secondary school for 2 weeks by the school administration. On
his way back home, he was was frightened by a dog which emerged from the nearby bush.
Immediately his heart beat and breathing rates changed, failed to move momently though after
sometime was able to run away. He could not imagine how he escaped the dog attack on
arriving home.

ITEM 4
Elephants are among the endangered species of organisms in Africa. Research has indicated
that these elephants are frequently hunted for their valuable ivory. Sources have it that people
hunting for these animals live around game parks and game reserves. This has caused a drastic
decrease in the number of elephants in most of the game parks. Of recent, the population of
elephants in Kibale National Game Park were counted for a period of seven years and data
obtained recorded in the table 1 below.

Due to the above data, the government of Uganda has come up with many interventions to
conserve wildlife since tourism has a big contribution towards the economy of the country.
Task
Explain the various human activities which have contributed to the decrease in the population
of elephants and the possible solutions to overcome the above problem. (15 scores)

5 Turnover
ITEM 5.
Many farmers practicing farming in hilly areas in Uganda especially in Kigezi regions are
facing many challenges in their farmlands due to increased washing of top soils to low lying
areas especially during rainy seasons. This has greatly affected productivity in such areas.

Task
As a soil scientist, explain to these farmers the likely causes of the above problem. Advise
them on the possible measures that can be used to overcome the above problem. (15 scores)

ITEM 6
Kiprotich is one of the famous athletes in Uganda who has participated and represented the
country in various common wealth games held in Moscow in Russia. In one of the Olympics
games, before the competitions began,kiprotich took a meal rich in carbohydrates 30 minutes
prior to the race. At the start of the race, he was observed splinting at a faster rate though
towards the end of the race his speed reduced, heart beat and breathing rates increased and
seemed to be experiencing a lot of muscular pain in his limbs. After the race he rested for a
while and later stood and moved across the field to jubilate his success.

Task
Explain how the carbohydrates he ate before the race were metabolized in his body,
physiological changes that occurred during the race and after the race. (15 scores)

ITEM 7
One of the big buildings in Ukraine was bombarded and this claimed the lives of many
people. Research indicates that thousands of people died since they were strongly hit by the
particles that broke down from the building. Medical reports indicate that some people died
because of suffocation due to breathing difficulties that they encountered. Surprisingly the
rescue team was able to rescue a young boy under the blocks after 3 days. Doctors revealed
that he was able to continue breathing in and out before the rescue.

Task
Explain the processes /changes that occurred to enable this young boy continue taking in
oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Explain other changes in his physiology that occurred to
enable him continue respiring despite the low oxygen levels below the blocks. (15 scores)
