Interhouse Debate Script

The author argues against shifting school start times later, claiming it won't solve students' sleep issues as they often misuse extra time on screens. Changing schedules could disrupt parents' routines and reduce social interactions among students, making school less enjoyable. Instead of altering timings, the focus should be on educating students about proper sleep habits and time management.

(Against)Topic:Starting school later would allow students to get the sleep

they need to thrive

I completely disagree with what they have to say.

Although early school times make it difficult for students to wake up early, shifting
the timings wouldn't solve the problem.

We often hear complaints that students come late to school because they wake
up late. Some believe that starting school later would give students extra time
and improve attendance. However, this thinking is completely wrong . If school
timings are shifted, students would have extra time, but they might misuse it by
spending more time on social media, increasing their screen time. The real
reason students wake up late is that they stay up too late at night, often wasting
time on mobile phones and other electronic gadgets.Giving them extra time won’t
increase their attendance

Secondly, students who are driven to school by their parents instead of taking the
bus or other transport will face a huge issue. Many parents schedule their work
around their children's current school times. They usually drop their children in
school before leaving for work.Changing the school schedule would make it hard
for them to manage their routine and could potentially make them late for work.

Let’s not forget that what truly makes students happy to come to school is
meeting their friends, playing with them, and enjoying learning together.
However, later school times would reduce their opportunities to interact with
friends, potentially making school less enjoyable and learning less fun.

With the current school timings, extracurricular activities are held after school. If
the school starts later, it could be challenging for students participating in these
activities as they may have less time to complete their homework or assignments
eventually lagging behind in academics and also increase their stress .According
to a study , changing school timings might elevate the risk of accidents for
students returning home during peak evening traffic hours.

Late school timings could also have a significant economic impact for the
marginalized students increasing the cost of logistics. Many students from
low-income backgrounds have after-school responsibilities, such as part-time
jobs to support their families. Shifting school timings could disrupt their ability to
balance these responsibilities with their academics.

I just want to emphasize that simply adjusting school times wouldn’t necessarily
improve every student's overall productivity.
Early school timings have been a tradition for ages. It encourages students to
wake up early, foster discipline into them which is essential. Extending school
timings would only make students more comfortable, potentially disrupting the
discipline in their routine.Even if the time is shifted, managing the time is really
important to mitigate this problem.

Rather than altering school timings, our focus should be on educating them about
maintaining proper sleeping habits to mitigate their sleep deprivation issues.

Overall, school timings shouldn’t be shifted, instead children should be taught

proper sleeping habits, how to effectively manage their time and be conscious
when it comes with their screen time.
