Agenda: Ensuring the Safety of Trade Routes in Conflict Zones
Position Paper
Honorable Chairmen and Distinguished Delegates,
In today’s interconnected global economy, the safety of trade routes in conflict zones is not only a matter
of economic stability but also a lifeline for millions dependent on secure supply chains. Each year, over
$18 trillion worth of goods traverse international waters and land routes, underscoring their critical role.
However, these lifelines are increasingly threatened by geopolitical tensions, piracy, and armed conflicts.
The Suez Canal, a keystone in global trade connecting the Mediterranean and Red Seas, remains one of
the most vital arteries in this system. For Egypt, ensuring its safety has become not just a national
responsibility but a global imperative.
The Importance of the Agenda
The significance of this agenda extends beyond individual nations. A disruption in trade routes due to
conflict can trigger inflation, delay supply chains, and endanger millions of lives reliant on essential
goods, including food and medicine. The security of routes like the Suez Canal and the Bab-el-Mandeb
Strait is vital for maintaining the free flow of energy resources, such as oil and natural gas, that power
economies globally. 40% of the world’s maritime trade passes through these chokepoints, making them
targets for exploitation by non-state actors during conflicts. Global unity in addressing these
vulnerabilities is therefore essential.
Historical Background of Egypt
Egypt’s strategic location has historically made it a focal point in trade and commerce. Since the opening
of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt has faced various challenges, including the Suez Crisis of 1956 and
threats from piracy and terrorism in recent decades. Over the years, Egypt has deployed military
resources, enhanced canal infrastructure, and collaborated with international stakeholders to mitigate
these threats. The country’s experience has underscored the importance of proactive measures, such as
securing navigation zones and implementing advanced surveillance systems.
Egypt’s Current Internal Policy
Today, Egypt has intensified its commitment to safeguarding its waterways. Recent investments in
modernizing the Suez Canal include its expansion to accommodate larger vessels and reduce congestion.
The Egyptian Armed Forces maintain a significant presence around the canal, deploying patrols and
advanced naval technologies to deter threats. Additionally, Egypt has enacted strict legislation to
criminalize activities that endanger trade security, ensuring swift prosecution of offenders.
Egypt’s Current International Policy
Egypt works closely with the United Nations, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and
regional coalitions like the Arab League to bolster trade route security. It has partnered with global
powers to conduct joint naval exercises, such as Operation Bright Star, and has taken active roles in anti-
piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden. Egypt’s initiatives also extend to humanitarian support, aiding
nations affected by disruptions in trade. Collaboration with the European Union and African Union has
enhanced cross-border infrastructure and improved regional trade stability.
Recommendations for Action
Egypt urges the international community to:
1. Establish a UN Task Force on Trade Route Security to monitor and respond to threats in real-
time.
2. Strengthen the implementation of international maritime laws, especially in conflict zones.
3. Provide financial and technological support to nations managing critical trade routes, enabling
them to bolster security measures.
4. Promote dialogue between conflicting parties to establish temporary trade corridors during
hostilities.
5. Develop a global maritime fund to address immediate crises, such as piracy or blockades.
6. Enhance information sharing between nations, ensuring timely response to potential threats.
Conclusion
Ensuring the safety of trade routes is not merely an economic necessity but a step toward a stable and
peaceful world. Egypt stands ready to lead by example, leveraging its strategic location and historical
expertise to collaborate with global partners in safeguarding these vital lifelines. As we deliberate, let us
remember that secure trade routes mean a secure future for humanity.
"Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, law, and order in the international
system." Let us work together to make this vision a reality.
