CARROM

Carrom Game: Overview & Rules

Carrom is a popular indoor tabletop game played in many parts of the world, especially in South
Asia. It is similar to billiards but played on a wooden board with pockets at the corners. The
objective is to use a striker to pocket small wooden discs, called carrom men, into the pockets
before the opponent does.

1. Equipment
• Carrom Board: A square wooden board (typically 74x74 cm) with a smooth surface and
four corner pockets.

• Carrom Men (Coins):

◦ White (9 pieces) – Belong to one player/team.

◦ Black (9 pieces) – Belong to the opponent.

◦ Red (1 piece) – Called the Queen, which has special rules.

• Striker: A heavier disc used to strike the carrom men.

2. Objective of the Game

Players take turns to strike and try to pocket their own carrom men (white or black). The player who
pockets all of their coins rst wins, but they must also pocket the Queen before their last piece to
secure victory.

3. Basic Rules
1. Turns & Striking
◦ Players take turns using the striker to hit carrom men.

◦ A turn continues if the player pockets a carrom man.

◦ If a player fails to pocket any coin, the turn passes to the opponent.

2. Pocketing the Queen
◦ The Queen can be pocketed at any time, but it must be covered (a player must
pocket one of their own carrom men immediately after).

◦ If the Queen is pocketed but not covered, it is placed back in the center.

3. Fouls & Penalties

◦ If the striker falls into a pocket, the player loses their turn and has to return one of
their pocketed carrom men to the board.

◦ Pocketing the opponent’s coin results in a loss of turn.

◦ Pocketing the Queen without covering places the Queen back on the board.

4. Scoring System
• Queen: 3 points (if properly covered).

• Each carrom man: 1 point.

• Winning condition: The rst player to reach 25 points (or as agreed) wins the game.

5. Variations
• Singles (1v1) or Doubles (2v2)

• Point Carrom: First to 25 points.

• Total Board Carrom: Players must pocket all coins.

• Professional Carrom: Played with stricter fouls and time limits.
