I have located the code of ethics for the National Association of Environmental

Professionals (N.A.E.P.), the code of ethics that is most applicable to my major in environmental

science. The N.A.E.P. code of ethics has eight parts covering standards for research, scientific

and professional integrity, and workplace behavior. It also specifies the intolerance of accepting

payment for specific results, such as misrepresenting the environmental impact of a business

project.

This is a professional code of ethics. The code specifies a series of aims for independent

members of a profession to follow in order to protect the public, the profession’s reputation, and

the individual’s integrity. According to the textbook, professional codes give guidance on

important ethical issues and considerations for the public. This code does that by strictly

prohibiting accepting payment for specified results during investigations, as well as urging

professionals to avoid conflicts of interest, or to be as transparent as possible if they are

unavoidable. I believe the ethical level of this code is the practical level. The behaviors specified

in this code are surely attainable by most people, most of the time, if they put in the effort to do

so. Science and research are a methodical, measured practice to begin with, so ensuring the

validity of one’s data, maintaining objectivity, not misrepresenting facts, and other ethics from

the code should come easily to people in this field.

I am happy to have found this code of ethics in my research. I believe it will be very

useful in the pursuit of my career goals and provides concrete guidelines for me to follow in my

future work. The first two clauses in particular are good to keep in mind in this field. They

specify that one should feel personally responsible for the validity of data, and one should remain

objective and follow the principles of the scientific method. Much of the code is comprised of

things I most likely would have done anyway, but it is vindicating to see a professional

organization agree with my ethics. I believe it would be quite easy for most people to follow this

ethical code; It does not ask for anything particularly difficult. In fact, some of the clauses are

things that all people should strive for regardless of profession, such as respecting others in the

workplace, not engaging in dishonest or deceitful behavior, and not discriminating against those

who are different than you.
