Big Basket

It’s BIG. We love big home dec

baskets! Big, medium, small – any
size baskets. Handmade baskets are
all so beautiful and functional.
The pattern is written for the
pictured basket size, approximately
13”. We added gorgeous leather
handles to make it complete.
Crochet different sizes with simple
modifications to the bottom.
My cats were also very interested in
the basket project, but they couldn’t
have this one. I’ll just have to make
one for each of them. Enjoy!

Materials
One skein of Bobbiny, Jumbo 9mm Braiding Cord, 100% recycled cotton & polyester core. 100 meters.
Size Q (15.75mm) crochet hook. Smaller size crochet hook for tucking in the ends. (8mm H.)
One locking stitch marker. Yarn needle.
The bottom of the basket is 13" in diameter 6" tall. Gauge is 1 st./inch.
Directions
Bottom of basket
Using the Magic Ring technique, SC9 stitches.
Round 1: SC (single crochet) into the first SC to connect the round, PM (place marker). SC into that stitch again.
Continue 2SC into each stitch. (The order of stitches will be: 2, 2, 2, etc. to EOR.) 18 stitches.
Round 2: Remove Marker, SC the first stitch, replace the marker, SC1 into same stitch, SC1 into next stitch.
*SC2 into next stitch, SC1, repeat from * to the end of the round. 27 stitches.
(The order of stitches will be: 2, 1, 2, 1, etc. to EOR.)
Round 3: Remove Marker, SC the first stitch, replace the marker, SC1 into same stitch, SC1 into next 2 Stitches,
*SC2 into next stitch, SC2, repeat from * to the end of the round. 36 stitches.
(The order of stitches will be: 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, etc. to EOR.)
Round 4: Remove Marker, SC the first stitch, replace the marker, SC1 into same stitch, SC1 into next 3 Stitches,
*SC2 into next stitch, SC3, repeat from * to the end of the round. 45 stitches.
(The order of stitches will be: 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, etc. to EOR.)
Round 5: Remove Marker, SC the first stitch, replace the marker, SC1 into each stitch to the end of the round.
Bottom ridge. Remove Marker, SC into the back of the first stitch,
replace marker. SC INTO THE BACK LEG OF EACH STITCH IN THIS
ROUND. This will create the bottom ridge.
Sides of basket
Crochet Knit Stitch
Rounds 1-6: Remove marker, CKS (Crochet Knit Stitch) in between the
stitches. This is not under the two loops of the SC stitch. It is CKS stitch in
between all stitches in the round. (Note: The manufacturer’s instructions
call this a V stitch, however it is a Crochet Knit Stitch)
This is a very good video demonstrating the stitch we use for the
sides of the basket. Please watch.)
Remember to replace the marker at the start of each round.
Finishing
Cut a 6" tail and secure final stitch. Create a duplicate stitch with
the tail into the marked stitch. Use a smaller crochet hook (5mm H)
to pull the tails through the base of a few stitches, then trim the
tails close.
Optional Handles
Adding handles is optional (but a lovely choice). Check with your
LYS for their choices. The sample was made with cord and handles at Knitting from the Heart in Woodbury, MN.
Sizes
Crochet smaller baskets by starting with fewer stitches or reducing the number of rounds at the bottom of the
basket. Using a larger hook will result in bigger, looser stitches and the walls of the basket will be softer.
Project Notes
The cord manufacturer has made available a .pdf pattern with photos, notes, and tutorial links. bobbiny.com
They demonstrate a smaller basket. I have changed the bottom to make the basket larger.
The cord is 9mm and it is crocheted in a spiral, starting at the bottom, with a large hook. I used a 15.75mm or Q crochet
hook in the Boye brand. When selecting a hook for this project, always refer to the mm size of the hook. The letter
identifiers vary between different manufacturers. The recommended sizes for the Big Basket go up to 18mm.
I hope you enjoy crocheting this basket.
