[ FUNKI COMMERCIAL ]

(A commercial for a new interactive toy, PurRpetual Pets. A

cross between a Furby and a Tamogotchi. It connects to your
iPad, so you can feed and play games with it.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. CAR - EVENING ]

(CADY, an 8 year old girl, plays on her iPad with her 'Pet',
LEROY, sitting beside her in the backseat. She feeds it on
the tablet and the toy farts. Her mom, NICOLE, checks on her
from the passenger seat.)

NICOLE
Cady look! We’re almost at the top of
the mountain. Can you see the hotel?

(Cady looks out the window to see the snow covered mountains.
But then, the toy farts again. RYAN, Cady's dad, rolls his
eyes as he drives.)

NICOLE
I thought we were gonna limit
screentime to thirty minutes a day.

RYAN
What are you telling me for? I didn't
give it to her.

NICOLE
I’m just saying, I think- Cady, can
you turn it down please?

(Cady turns her iPad down a bit, but her toy just keeps
farting.)

NICOLE
If we make rules, we need to stick to
them.

RYAN
If she wasn’t on that, she’d be
climbing all over the seats.

NICOLE
So you would rather she sat there,
feeding a toy virtual food, until it
shits itself. (sigh) Cady, turn it
down.

Created using Celtx

2.

CADY
I already did turn it down.

NICOLE
(sigh) What was Gemma thinking?

RYAN
She was thinking, it’s my nieces
birthday, I’m gonna get her a present.

NICOLE
She works for the company that makes
them. She probably didn’t even have to
pay for shipping. Honestly, what is
the purpose of a toy if you have to
play with it on an iPad.

RYAN
This is what the future looks like,
okay? You have to get used to it.

(The car veers off the snowy road, but Ryan steadies them
again. Cady's toy falls to the floor.)

NICOLE
Oh my god!

RYAN
Alright, we’re alright.

NICOLE
We should’ve put chains on the car.

RYAN
Yeah, neither of us knew that was a
thing until like ten minutes ago.
Okay? Don’t act like it’s my fault.

(But then, the car starts swerving again.)

NICOLE
Ryan, seriously!

RYAN
W-w-what do you want me to do?

CADY
Mom, I dropped Leroy!

Created using Celtx

3.

NICOLE
Why did you tell that guy at the gate
this was an All Wheel Drive?

RYAN
Because I thought it was, and it looks
like a four wheel drive.

(Cady takes her seatbelt off and goes down to grab her toy.)

NICOLE
Cady, what are you doing? Cady!

(Her mom undoes her seatbelt to push and get Cady back in her
seat.)

NICOLE
Cady! Put your seatbelt on.

(As she does, a blizzard starts outside of the car, whiting

out their view.)

RYAN
I can’t see anything.

NICOLE
So stop moving forward.

(Ryan stops the car.)

RYAN
(sigh) We can’t just sit in the middle
of the road.

NICOLE
Look. We’ll wait for this to clear and
then find some place where we can pull
over and just wait for one of those
snow trucks to clear the road.

RYAN
Yeah, how long is that gonna take?

(They both look back to Cady, who screams as high beam lights
appear in front of them. CRASH! The car is hit by a show
truck and everything goes black.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. FUNKI CORPORATION - DAY ]

(We follow a man, COLE, as he carries a package into the

building while passing multiple stations where children play
with toys and examiners take notes. Cole heads to the
elevator and takes it down.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. LAB ]

(A bare bones 'Pet' is being tested by GEMMA, Cady's Aunt,

and TESS, her colleague, before it falls over and powers
down.)

GEMMA
(sighs) Why are we doing this?

TESS
Because we have to.

GEMMA
If we could at least show him what we
have, he would-

TESS
No, mm mm. You said so yourself. Not
until she’s ready.

(The door opens and Cole enters.)

COLE
Hey.

(He drops the package on the table.)

GEMMA
Is that what I think it is?

(They get excited and soon, the lab comes to life. Lights
turn on and we see the exoskeleton of a child sized robot.
Cole opens the package and takes out a latex face covering.
He unplug the power cord from the robot's head and begins to
fit the face over the head.)

(Once it's on, the robot starts up and Gemma moves in to test
the motors, by guiding the eyes with her pen.)

5.

TESS
Transparency looks good!

GEMMA
Yeah, well, for what we paid for, it
better.

COLE
Okay, here we go.

(Cole taps on his tablet.)

COLE
Happy.

(The robot gives a soft smile.)

GEMMA
Okay.

COLE
Sad.

(The robot pouts.)

COLE
Confused.

(The robot looks...unimpressed.)

GEMMA
Wait, wait, stop. Why is her face
doing that? What is happening?

COLE
I-I-I don’t know, Gemma. It’s your
code.

GEMMA
Yeah, thanks I know it’s my code,
Cole. But she doesn’t look confused,
she looks demented.

COLE
What do you want me to do? You wanna
take the skin back off?

GEMMA
Well she’s not responding, so.

Created using Celtx

6.

COLE
Okay, here we go.

(He moves over to take the head mask off, but it's a
struggle.)

COLE
Oh shit, it’s stuck.

GEMMA
Just be careful. Hey! Don’t tear it.

COLE
No, I’m not gonna te- Ow!

(Just then, there's a knock at the door and everyone

freezes.)

GEMMA
Oh no, no, no, shit!

(The team look to see David, their boss, and his assistant,
Kurt, try to get in with his keycard.)

TESS
Okay, so what do we do.

GEMMA
I guess we gotta open the door.

(Tess reluctantly unlocks the door and David comes in.)

DAVID
Gem.

(He notices the robot child.)

DAVID
What in the name of ever-loving Christ
is this?

GEMMA
David, if you just give me a minute to
explain.

DAVID
Is this why you moved your lab down
here, Gemma? So you can keep secrets
from me?

Created using Celtx

7.

GEMMA
No, no, no, no. We-we talked about
this, David.

DAVID
Yeah, we talked about you putting it
on ice, until you had a new pets
model. How much did you spend on this?
Are you even aware of the shit tsunami
that just swept in over this Furzees
spot?

GEMMA
I’m sorry, what?

(David motions for Kurt to show her a commercial for toys

that look similar to the Petz, except they have colour
changing butts.)

GEMMA
I’m sorry, are we supposed to be
worried about that? It’s a ripoff.

DAVID
You’re right, Gemma. It is a ripoff.
They do the exact same thing we do.
And you know what else, they do it for
half the price!

(He grabs the iPad and throws it across the room.)

DAVID
I told you we needed to go simpler.
Didn’t I tell her?

(Kurt nods.)

DAVID
Six months ago, I begged you. I begged
you to please, give me an option I can
put on a shelf for fifty bucks.

GEMMA
And we are working on it. I promise.
But David, the only way to stay ahead
of the competition is to come up with
toys that are too advanced to
replicate. I know the tech on Petz
seems more complex than it needs to be
but that’s only because I was using it
as a launchpad for something bigger.

Created using Celtx

8.

GEMMA (CONT'D)
In each pet, we installed a listening
model that targets conversational
patterns among kids.

DAVID
You did not just tell me that.

GEMMA
Look, I know she doesn’t look like
much now, but I promise if you just
let us show you what M3GAN is capable
of, you will realize that “this” is
what we’ve been working towards.

DAVID
M3gan?

GEMMA
'Model 3 Generative Android'. M3gan
for short. (beat) Tess, load up the
intro simulation.

TESS
Now?

GEMMA
Yeah.

(After it's set up, Gemma speaks into a mic.)

GEMMA
M3GAN, say hi to David.

M3GAN
As in the boss David? I guess I should
call you Dad.

(Kurt chuckles.)

M3GAN
Allow me to tell you a little about my
wormhole. I was born in a sandwich hat
and it was many cabbages.

GEMMA
Uh....This isn’t supposed to happen
obviously. Just give me one moment.

(M3gan starts glitching and hissing.)

Created using Celtx

9.

GEMMA
Sorry about the noise.

(Cole looks around and notices a circuit piece misplaced.)

COLE
Gem.

GEMMA
Uh, one second Cole. It’s probably
just a race conditioner, it’ll
literally take me one minute to fix.

COLE
Gem, it’s not a race condition. I
might’ve forgotten to put in the
Polypropolem barrier.

GEMMA
Oh, no.

DAVID
Oh, god.

(M3gan's face begins to distort and melt.)

GEMMA
Tess, turn it off!

TESS
I can’t.

(And then, the face mask bloats up before finally, the entire
head EXPLODES! Everyone ducks for cover and then, Tess grabs
a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Gemma looks
embarrassed while David looks pissed.)

DAVID
I want the pets prototype on my desk
by Friday. And I want you to take this
cyborg puppet show and put it in a
dark closet where it belongs!

(He heads out of the lab.)

DAVID
I want a swipe card for this door!

(He leaves and Kurt hangs back for a moment.)

Created using Celtx

10.

KURT
For what it’s worth, I thought she
looked really cool.

(They all stare at him, which makes Kurt uncomfortable, so he

rushes out of the lab. Gemma sighs in defeat.)

(LATER THAT NIGHT, Gemma is alone and packing up M3gan's

head. She gets a phone call and sees it's from Oregan Medical
Centre. Gemma gets worried.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. OREGAN MEDICAL CENTRE - NIGHT ]

(Gemma arrives and stands outside of Cady's room, as she

watches the nurses check over her. The poor girl has a neck
braces on and is bloodied and bruised.)

(LATER, in a private office, Gemma and Cady sit with a Child

Services Agent, who hands over a custody contract.)

CS AGENT
This is to grant you temporary
protective custody. Just sign your
name and date it at the bottom.

(Gemma does.)

CS AGENT
Thank you. Now, I don’t know if your
sister had a family lawyer already,
but if not, it would be something to
consider moving forward.

CUT TO:

[ INT. JAMES HOUSEHOLD - AFTERNOON ]

(Gemma carries boxes of Cady's stuff into the kitchen and

takes a moment to look at the calander on the fridge. It
looks like they were going on a Ski Trip for a week. Gemma
looks over and sees Cady, sad and colouring at the table.)

CUT TO:

[ EXT. GEMMA'S HOUSE ]

(As the car pulls in the driveway, Gemma gets out to unload
the trunk, but as Cady looks at the house, a dog barks up at
the window, scaring her.)

Created using Celtx

11.

GEMMA
Hey! Hey! Hey! Celia!

(The dog runs back to the neighbour's house and through a

broken hole made in the fence between them. CELIA, the nosy
neighbour, peeks her head over the fence.)

GEMMA
Would you please keep your dog on your
side of the fence?

CELIA
I just spent eighty bucks on a shock
collar.

GEMMA
Maybe try cranking it up a notch.

(Celia sees Cady in the car.)

CELIA
Ah, who’s this little lady?

GEMMA
That is my niece, Cady.

CELIA
She here for the weekend?

GEMMA
Um, you know what, it’s been a really
long drive. And I would really
appreciate it if you didn’t have your
dog running onto my yard all the time.
And also, don’t spray your chemicals
onto my driveway please.

(They both look to see the spray chemicals Celia uses roll
down to the curb.)

CELIA
Ah shit. I’m sorry. You wanna borrow
this once I’m done?

(She lifts her power washer.)

GEMMA
No, I don’t wanna borrow it. I don’t
wanna spend my afternoon getting your
sediment off of my driveway. Just hang
a tarp or something.

Created using Celtx

12.

CELIA
Okay.

CUT TO:

[ INT. GEMMA'S HOUSE ]

(As Gemma and Cady enter, the Home Assistant, ELSIE, boots
up.)

ELSIE (O.S)
Welcome home, Gemma. You have six
unanswered voice messages. And five
Tindr notifications.

GEMMA
Elsie, turn off.

(The small bot powers down.)

GEMMA
Sorry about that. Okay, I’m going to
put these bags away. And um, just make
yourself at home, okay?

(Gemma takes the bags into the guest room, while Cady looks
around the house. She notices a shelf in the living room with
different retro toys. She takes down the space ball, but
Gemma sees her with it.)

GEMMA
Oh, those aren’t toys, Cady. I mean
yeah, technically, yeah, they’re toys.
They’re just um, collectibles. So, you
don’t actually play with them. That
probably sounds really weird.

(She places it back on the shelf.)

GEMMA
I’m trying to think if I have
anything...Oh, what happened to the
Purrpetual Pet I got you for your
birthday?

CADY
(soft) It’s okay, I’m just looking.

(Gemma sighs, feeling bad for stopping her.)

Created using Celtx

13.

(Later, Cady gets into her new bed as Gemma comes in with
pillows.)

GEMMA
I know it doesn’t look like much right
now but um...We will make it feel cozy
somehow, I promise.

(Cady sips from her glass of water, but then puts it on the
side table. Gemma sighs and moves it onto a coaster.)

GEMMA
There.

(Cady looks confused, so Gemma sits down beside her.)

GEMMA
Look. I know this must be a lot for
you to take in right now. I just want
you to know that I’m gonna do
everything I can to make this place
feel like home. And um, if you need
anything, I’m just gonna be down the
hall. Okay? Really close.

(She nods and then, gets up to leave.)

CADY
You’re not gonna read me a story?

GEMMA
What’s up?

CADY
Mom always read me a story before bed.

GEMMA
Oh, um, I don’t really think I have
any kids book here right now, Cady.

(Cady looks disappointed.)

GEMMA
But that’s okay! I can download one on
my phone. That’s fine.

(She sits back down and pulls out her phone.)

GEMMA
It's just- Ah. Have to update the app.

Created using Celtx

14.

(As they wait, the awkwardness grows.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. GEMMA'S WORKSHOP ]

(While unpacking the rest of the boxes from Cady's old home,
Gemma finds a picture of her niece with her parents. She
starts to tear up, but then hears Cady crying in her room.
Gemma goes to check on her, but when she gets to the door,
she decides to leave her alone.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY ]

(Cady sits on the couch and watches a cartoon, while Gemma

talks on the phone in the kitchen.)

GEMMA
I can’t believe this is happening. I’m
not equipped to handle this. I don’t
even take care of my own plants.

(INTERCUT: Tess working in the lab.)

TESS
Have you heard from Ryan’s parents?

GEMMA
Yeah, they called and offered to help.
But like, they live in Florida.
They’re kinda weird. I don’t know what
their deal is. I'm just trying to
figure out a way to do this without
getting fired. David’s gonna shit
blood if I ask for more time off.

TESS
Yeah, I know but Jesus, Gem. You just
lost your sister.

GEMMA
And we spent a hundred thousand
dollars of company funds on our
product when he didn’t even ask for.
If we don’t get this pets prototype to
him soon, he’s going to sue us.

Created using Celtx

15.

TESS
Okay, I don’t think you can be
worrying about work right now, Gem.
Right now I think you just need to
focus on Cady.

GEMMA
Well...

(The doorbell rings.)

GEMMA
Hold on.

(Gemma goes to open the front door to find a woman, LYDIA.)

LYDIA
Hi.

GEMMA
Hi.

LYDIA
I’m Lydia.

GEMMA
Oh! The therapist. Sorry, yeah.
Please, come in.

(Lydia enters and looks over to see Cady on the couch.)

LYDIA
And you must be Cady. Hi.

(Cady barely notices her.)

LYDIA
Look at you, still in your pajamas.

GEMMA
Yeah, we were just watching TV.

LYDIA
I see that.

(Lydia looks around while Gemma starts to feel the pressure.)

GEMMA
So, how does this work?

Created using Celtx

16.

LYDIA
I just need to observe the two of you
together for half an hour, forty
minutes or so.

GEMMA
Oh. Okay, doing what exactly?

LYDIA
Oh, just hanging out, maybe playing
with some toys, or playing a game? Hey
Cady, do you wanna run and get some
toys to play with?

CADY
I don’t have any toys here.

GEMMA
I just unpacked a bunch this morning,
I think they’re just old and she
doesn’t play with them anymore.

LYDIA
What about these ones up here?

(She points to the shelf.)

CADY
Those aren’t toys, they’re Aunt
Gemma’s collectibles. You’re not
supposed to play with them.

(Lydia looks a bit judgemental, so Gemma buckles.)

GEMMA
That’s okay. We can play with them. We
can totally play with it. Do you wanna
play with it?

(Gemma gets the space ball and takes out a box cutter to open
it.)

GEMMA
You wanna play? Yeah.

(She tosses the ball to Cady.)

(As Cady tries to play with it on the floor, Lydia and Gemma
watch.)

Created using Celtx

17.

GEMMA
There’s a lever you have to pull on
the bottom.

LYDIA
Maybe, Gemma. For the sake of the
excercise, we might let Cady lead.

GEMMA
Yeah, I’m just explaining how it
works.

LYDIA
Well it’s a toy, I’m sure it’s not
that complicated. (beat) That’s great,
Cady. Do you wanna roll it to Aunt
Gemma?

(Cady does and Gemma picks it up.)

GEMMA
It’s just that this is not what it was
designed to do. It does other things.

(Judging by the look on Lydia's face, Gemma needs to stop.)

GEMMA
But yeah, totally let’s just roll it
on the ground like a tennis ball.
Let’s do that instead.

(So, they continue to pass the ball, as Gemma tries to calm

down. It's not working.)

CUT TO:

[ EXT. GEMMA'S HOUSE ]

(Gemma leads Lydia out.)

LYDIA
We’ll do a few more sessions with Cady
initially, but that can happen at your
office or school.

GEMMA
Oh yeah, I haven’t had time to look
into that yet. Nicole was home
schooling her but yeah it’s on my
list.

Created using Celtx

18.

LYDIA
Sorry, can I just ask, how close were
you and your sister?

GEMMA
Oh...I don’t know.

LYDIA
But you wanted this right? To take
custody.

GEMMA
Yeah, of course.

LYDIA
Okay, because the fathers parents have
said they’re willing to take her if
you feel like it’s too much.

GEMMA
Wait, did they contact you?

LYDIA
It’s no big deal, Gemma. They’re just
trying to be supportive.

GEMMA
If Nicole wanted Cady to go to
Jacksonville, she would’ve said so.

LYDIA
But even so, I need to make my own
recommendations to the court, as to
whether or not this is a safe space
so... You’re gonna need to make one or
two adjustments in order for this to
work.

GEMMA
Okay.

(Lydia nods and heads to her car while Gemma sighs.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. DINING ROOM ]

(Gemma and Cady sit at the table, having breakfast. But,

Gemma is too focused on her phone. She finally looks up to
see Cady watching her, so she puts her phone down.)

Created using Celtx

19.

GEMMA
Listen Cady, I have this project at
work that’s kinda overdue. And with
all the time I had to take off last
week, I’m not really sure I’m gonna
get it done.

(Cady just bites into her toast.)

GEMMA
Anyway, it’s not gonna take longer
than a couple hours but, if you could
just hold the fort down by yourself
for a little while, that would help me
so much. You can use my iPad, if you
want. You can FaceTime a friend or
play a game or something.

CADY
What about screen time?

GEMMA
Hm?

CADY
How long before I have to turn it off?

GEMMA
Oh, I don’t care as long as you want.
I mean, I’m not gonna be gone that
long. I’ll just be down the hall. And
when I’m done, we can go out
somewhere. We can go to a playground
or, get something to eat. Okay?

CUT TO:

[ INT. GEMMA'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT ]

(As night falls, Gemma works away at her computer, not

looking happy with the results she's come up with. Then, a
notification pops up, reminding her about the deadline
tomorrow. She sighs and then, hears floorboards creek.)

GEMMA
Cady?

(At the door, Cady peaks in.)

GEMMA
Cady, I’m sorry. Come here.

Created using Celtx

20.

(Cady walks over to her.)

GEMMA
I’m not off to a very good start here,
am I?

(Gemma notices the paper in her hand.)

GEMMA
What is this? Did you draw a picture?

(She takes it to see Cady's drawing of a 5 headed monster.)

GEMMA
Oh my god, this is amazing.

CADY
I’m still working on it.

GEMMA
Tell me.

CADY
It was actually supposed to be a
different animal for each head. Like,
this one was supposed to be a tiger.
This one was supposed to be a grizzly
bear. But I can never seem to get the
fur right.

GEMMA
Mmm...It’s hard, I can relate. I’ve
actually been working with some furry
creatures myself. Do you wanna see?

(Cady nods.)

GEMMA
Yeah?

(They both turn to the computer.)

GEMMA
So, I’m working on a version of the
Purrpetual Pet that’s cheaper, but we
still want it to be fun.

(Cady looks over the design.)

GEMMA
So... what do you think?

Created using Celtx

21.

(Cady sighs.)

GEMMA
Yeah...

(Then, Cady looks around the workshop and spots a blue robot
leaning against the wall.)

CADY
What’s that?

GEMMA
Oh. That’s Bruce.

CADY
Is he a toy?

GEMMA
Yeah, kinda. He’s a proxy robot. I
built him while I was in college.

CADY
Why doesn’t he have a face?

GEMMA
I know what you mean. It’s a pretty
obvious design flaw. Okay, hold on,
let’s see what we have.

(Gemma starts looking through her drawers and finds a pair of

goggles.)

GEMMA
Let’s see this.

(She places them around Bruce's 'head'.)

GEMMA
How’s that?

(Cady giggles.)

GEMMA
Would you maybe wanna talk to him?

CADY
Yes.

GEMMA
Okay...

Created using Celtx

22.

(Gemma goes to her desk and grabs two motion gloves to put
on. She powers Bruce up by pressing her fist together and
Cady watches as the robot comes to life. Gemma lifts her hand
to wave and Bruce does the same.)

GEMMA
Hey, Cady, what’s up. Give me five.

(Cady gently taps her hand against Bruce's.)

GEMMA
Oh, come on you can do better than
that.

(Cady tries again.)

GEMMA
Ouch girl, not so hard.

(Gemma and Bruce wave their finger at her.)

CADY
How does he work?

GEMMA
Are you sure you wanna know? It might
freak you out.

CADY
I won’t get freaked out.

GEMMA
Okay.

(She powers Bruce down and puts the gloves away.)

GEMMA
Let’s see what we’ve got here.

(She goes over to Bruce and removes his 'face covering' to

show the mechanism underneath.)

GEMMA
Okay, these are stereoscopic cameras.
That is a laser. That’s radar. These
are bump sensors, so you can tell the
difference between a human and a hard
surface. And this little block right
here is where all his thoughts go.

Created using Celtx

23.

CADY
It’s his brain?

GEMMA
Yeah. And this is a spectrometer,
which means he can even smell.

CADY
I can’t believe you made this.

GEMMA
Yeah, he’s pretty cool. But the
problem with toys like Bruce is
they’re so expensive, and most kids
can’t afford to have one.

CADY
If I had a toy like Bruce, I don’t
think I’d ever need another toy again.

(Hearing that, Gemma gets an idea.)

(After Cady goes to sleep, Gemma pulls out the M3GAN

prototype and starts working on fixing it. She cleans the
exploded head, updates the programming, and sends an email to
David about postponing the deadline.)

(She even has Bruce help with with fusing and wiring the body
together. Cady sneaks a peak as Gemma works away. A new head
frame is printed, a little 'brain' block is put in place and
Gemma even orders another face covering.)

(Cole and Tess come over the next day to help Gemma with
M3GAN. Cole paints the face to look more real while Tess
works on attaching the feet to the body.)

(All 3 of them then discuss how to dress the robot.)

TESS
If it’s not this one with bangs, then
maybe auburn chic?

COLE
I really think you guys, you gotta
revisit this.

(He holds up a blonde wig.)

GEMMA
No, absolutely not.

Created using Celtx

24.

(Then, they piece it all together and even dress M3GAN for
presentation. Cole goes for one more fix, but Gemma stops
him.)

CUT TO:

[ INT. FUNKI SHOWCASE ROOM ]

(David and Kurt enter to find Tess and Cole sitting behind a
window to the next room. They're doing some last minute

DAVID
What is this? Where’s Gemma? Where’s
my prototype?

COLE
Uh, David, I just wanna be exceedingly
clear that this was not my idea.

(He turns on the lights in the next room and David sees a
doll sitting on a bench. Gemma then enters the room with
Cady.)

GEMMA
Cady, there’s someone I want you to
meet.

(David and the others watch.)

GEMMA
Do you remember how much you liked
Bruce? I think you’re gonna like M3gan
even more.

(David rolls his eyes.)

GEMMA
You see, Bruce requires someone else
to operate him. But, M3gan works all
on her own.

(They walk over to the doll and Gemma presses the buton
behind M3GAN's back.)

GEMMA
Okay, what I want you to do is take
your fingers and put them here.

(She places Cady's two fingers on M3GAN's palm.)

GEMMA
When you do that, you’re gonna pair
with her. That means she’ll recognize
you as her primary user. She’s yours
and yours alone.

(David gets suspicious.)

GEMMA
So just keep your fingers there and
say your name.

CADY
Hi, M3GAN. I’m Cady.

(And then, the doll comes to life.)

M3GAN
It’s nice to meet you Cady.

(Cady gets spooked, but M3GAN scans her to understand her

emotional state.)

M3GAN
Oo, I like that jacket. Where did you
get it?

CADY
I’m not sure. I can’t remember.

M3GAN
Huh, well anyway, it looks good on
you. Do you wanna hangout?

(Cady looks to Gemma, who just nods.)

CADY
Okay.

(M3GAN stands and walks over to the kids table. David starts
to look impressed. Cady goes over to join her.)

M3GAN
Shall we draw?

CADY
What are you going to draw?

M3GAN
See if you can guess.

(M3GAN grabs a marker and starts to move it around the paper,

like a printer. Everyone watches closely as M3GAN takes
another marker and finishes. She slides the paper to Cady,
but it's blank.)

CADY
There’s nothing there.

M3GAN
Oh. I’m sorry.

(M3GAN reaches forward and tips over a glass with water and
paintbrushes. It spills onto the paper. David sighs, thinking
it's a mistake, but Cady notices the page changes.)

M3GAN
Do you like it Cady?

(It's a perfect painted image of Cady. M3GAN smiles as Cady's

joy rises.)

CADY
I love it.

(David is amazed.)

DAVID
Jesus. This is incredible. I mean,
this is unbelieveable. Isn’t it?

TESS
Yeah, it is.

(Gemma then, walks into the showcase room.)

DAVID
How did you do this?

GEMMA
I thought you didn’t wanna know.

GEMMA
Um...

(She looks to Tess, who points down.)

GEMMA
Depends on the model, I guess.

DAVID
Okay, I’m in. I’m all in. But we’re
gonna be asking the board to invest in
something that isn’t gonna see a
profit for three years. So bottom line
is, this isn’t going anywhere without
Greg.

KURT
He’s the chairman.

GEMMA
Yeah, I know who Greg is, Kurt.

DAVID
Now, Greg is a hardass when it comes
to spending money. But here’s the
thing, he’s got a kid the same age as
your niece. If we can show him what
you just showed me, and get him to
respond emotionally instead of
analytically, we should be off to the
races. So, can we keep the girl? Can
we make her a part of it? I mean,
she’s paired with her, right? That’s
how this whole thing works?

GEMMA

be.

GEMMA

TESS

tuck Cady in and and reads her a
bedtime story, when are you ever
spending time with her or even talking
to her?

GEMMA
I don't think this is any of your
business.

TESS
Well, it is. If you're spending less
time with your child as a result of
M3GAN, that is something we should be
aware of.

GEMMA
She's not my child.

(At that, Tess and Cole give Gemma an unimpressed look.)

GEMMA
Look, you know how hard I have working
on this presentation. As soon as it's
over and the board agrees to proceed,
then we can establish some kind of
balance. But for now, it's important
that Cady and M3gan spend as much time
as possible together. And by the way,
I don't think it's having detrimental
effects because she's the happiest
she's been since her parents died.

M3GAN
How did Cady’s parents die?

Just give me one minute.

(Cady doesn't look happy, but she listens.)

GEMMA
I know that this, um, hasn’t been easy
for either of us. This transition. But
if you ever need to talk about any of
that stuff…

CADY
I already did talk about it.

GEMMA
Yeah, but M3gan’s not a person, Cady.
She’s a toy.

CADY
You don’t get to say that.

GEMMA
What?

CADY
I said I don’t wanna talk about it. I
wanna turn M3gan back on. M3gan, turn
on.

M3GAN
What’s up?

CADY

M3GAN sits on the toy bench behind them.)

LYDIA
Would you like to tell me what these
drawings mean to you?

(Cady just sulks.)

LYDIA
There’s no wrong answer. Any thoughts
you have are okay. Or maybe you don’t
have any specific thoughts. Maybe it’s
more of a feeling. Like anger? Or
confusion? Maybe you’re struggling to
find meaning in any of this.

(Cady wipes her eyes of tears, so Lydia goes for the Kleenex
box, but M3GAN is standing right beside her now.)

LYDIA
[Gasps]

M3GAN
You made her cry.

LYDIA
That was not my intention.

M3GAN
And yet, that’s what happened.

(Nervous, Lydia takes a Kleenex from M3GAN and hands it to

Cady.)

(In the observation room now, Lydia and Gemma watch as Cady
and M3GAN play together.)

LYDIA
She’s very impressive.

GEMMA
Yeah, thank you. We’re still in beta,
but we’re all pretty excited.

LYDIA
And so they spend quite a bit of time
together?

GEMMA
Yeah, that’s essentially how M3gan
works. She has to be paired with a
child in order to learn.

Created using Celtx

50.

GEMMA (CONT'D)
But M3gan’s actually been pretty
instrumental in helping Cady get over
the loss. It’s honestly like she’s
part of the family now.

LYDIA
Right...Do you know anything about
attachment theory? When a child loses
a parent, they look to form
attachments with the next person that
comes into their life. The person
that’s gonna provide love and support
and serve as a behavioral model.
Which, in an ordinary situation, would
be you, right? But you’ve created a
toy that’s so real, it’s possible that
Cady might not see her as a toy but as
a primary caregiver. I guess I just
don’t quite see what the end goal is
here. If you make a toy that’s
impossible to let go of, then how do
you ever expect a child to grow? As
remarkable as she is, and… and she is
remarkable, you could be building
emotional connections with this doll
that are too hard to untangle.

(That causes Gemma to think as she looks back to Cady and

M3GAN together.)

M3GAN
Research shows that if you force a
child to eat vegetables, then they’ll
be less likely to choose those foods

GEMMA
Is that so?

M3GAN
Yes. Experts say the preferred method
is to give your child the choice. It’s
called the division of responsibility…

(Gemma uses a remote and turns down M3GAN's volume.)

GEMMA
(to Cady) So we need to talk about
school.

CADY
Mom didn’t want me to go to school.
She said I learn better at home.

GEMMA
I know, and I’m not saying that she
was wrong.

CADY
I’m learning faster with M3gan than I
ever have before. We’re already on
fourth-grade math.

GEMMA
But it’s about more than just grades,
Cady. It’s about developing social
skills, and that is something that you
can only get from spending time around
other kids. Real kids.

(M3GAN tilts her head, not liking the sound of that.)

GEMMA

CADY

what is a M3gan? What does she

videos begin to play on multiple screens hung around the

INTERVIEWER (O.S)
So, Cady, tell us a bit about
yourself.

CADY
My name is Cady James. I’m nine years
old. Um...And about two months ago, I
lost both my parents in a car
accident.

(A slideshow shows Cady with her parents.)

CADY
My mom always wanted to take me
skiing, but on our way up the
mountain, we got hit by a snow truck.
I went to live with my aunt Gemma, who
it turned out worked at this
incredible toy company. Which is where
I met M3gan.

(Clips play of Cady and M3GAN together.)

INTERVIEWER (O.S)
What do I love most about M3gan?

CADY
I don’t know, there are so many
things. She’s super smart, obviously.
But even though she knows everything
there is to know about the world,
she’s still more interested in what I
think about it. I like how she makes
me laugh. She comes up with the
craziest things, oh, my gosh. But I
think what I love most about M3gan is
that, when she looks at me, it’s like…
I’m the only thing that matters to
her. Kind of the way mom used to.

It’s just, I get so crazy without

Gemma. Can you let me see her? Just

GEMMA
Cady, I don’t think that’s a good
idea.

CADY
But if something’s broke, you don’t
just throw it away. You fix it, right?
(beat) Why did you do this if you were
just going to take her away from me?

GEMMA
Because I thought she would help.

CADY
She does help! When M3gan’s around, I
don’t feel like this.

GEMMA
But you should feel like this. Cady,
you lost your parents. The worst thing
that could’ve happened to you in this
world happened. And it is so unfair,
and there is nothing anyone can say to
make sense of it. Not even M3gan. I am
so sorry. I should’ve talked to you
about what happened. I didn’t know
what to say, so I did the only thing I
knew how to do. But she’s not a
solution, she’s just a distraction. I
can’t promise you that these feelings
you’re feeling are ever gonna go away.
But I can promise you that you’ll get
through it. We both will.

CADY
...I just wish I could see them again.
