CHAPTER THREE
POWER GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF POWER AT MMUST

The generation is basically on 8mw and 3mw steam turbine

The diesel generation are standby and used during the building up of steam in case the turbine
strip steal is ore pared with high temperature and preserve (377PH) for old boiler and 407PH for
new boiler

Part with their details

Turbine

Allow inlet at 4100c inlet pressure at 45 aim

Turbine retro speed is 8226 rpm

The turbine acts as prime moves to the alternators

The turbine is powered by steam in kinetic energy at a pressure of 43 Aim and temperature of
4100c

Gear box

It is coupled to the turbine shaft to reduce speed, since the turbine rotates at R.P.M of 8226 and
only 1500 R.P.M is needed by the alternator, then the gear box is coupled to perform its function

Alternator

Generates electrical energy at rotor R.P.M of 1500 and voltage output is 11kv

NB

Alternator--- electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy in the
form of alternating current.

E MOTORS

They include:

i. Thruster motor—this particularly are used for breaking. They provides barkers
ii. Closing &opening motors—they allow the crane to open and close on crabbing canes
iii. Hoisting and lowering—this enables the switch of the crane to move up &down
iv. Cross travel motors—allows the crane to move across to cane yard beam
v. Long travel motors—allows the crane to move along the cane yard beam

Motors cleaning

The fixed and movable contactor kits present in the control circuit of crane are evenly cleaned.

This is due to the formation of carbon on the contactor kit, this makes the contactor to become
insulated and this result to phase imbalance in the circuit hence the motors needs to draw a lot of
current while functioning

Auxiliaries (for control)

The N.C&N.O auxiliaries’ alternator in operations, when one opens the circuit, the other one
closes the circuit

They are connected on;

415v, 240v, 110vv,

415v—has all the 3 phase; red yellow, blue one of the phase acts a return (phase;coilA)(phase 2,
coil42)

240v—has neutral and live

110 have neutral and live

METHOD OF STARTING MOTOR

1. Star-Delta Connection
2. Rotor Resistance Starter
3. Direct –0n Line (D.O.L)

Operation (Forward-Reverse Operation)

When the start push button is pressed the contactor coil will be energized hence closing the coil
which supply power through the overload relay hence leading to running of motors when you
press the stop push button the contactor will be de-energized hence the motor is top running

CHAPTER 4
PURPOSE OF THE ATTACHMENT
The main purpose that made me to conduct my attachment at Masinde Muliro University was to
use my theory knowledge practically.
The knowledge of installation of lift motors and water motors learnt in class I used it practically
and be familiar with it.
The attachment helped to support my carrier of engineering as it is part of the training in the
course.

CHALLENGES FACED AT MMUST
I experienced hard time at MMUST as I was not much familiar with high places such as
chimney, crane and was supposed to work their but with no safety belt this was more risk to me

Language barrier- This was a big problem since people were speaking mainly ative language
other than Kiswahili and English.

There was a hard time while working to the baggage side as the small particles from the baggage
were causing eye problem because we were not given eye protector this caused me to have eye
problems every now and then.(this mostly happen when we are working in briquetting machine)

Sometimes the training manager used to be harsh, harassing you while on duty and as a serious
this me create same fear that even I was not able to ask question concerning what we were doing

RESOLUTION TO THE CHALLENGES

The challenges I faced at Masinde Muliro University gave me a hard time in undertaking the day
to day chores.

I used all means to learn the new duties that I was not familiar with. I bought all required tools
and equipments which were needed of learning more.

We created a common language which we used to communicate at the place of work. This made
our work easy as everyone was able to understand the language used.

I was able to cope with the harsh language used by the training manager with time as the days
went by.

The period was not as easy as I thought but I gained enough knowledge that will help me as I
continue with the course.

FINDINGS

As a student my observation was the cognition of the difference between the school environment
and the labor market as it is different ball game entire

I also observed safety which was paramount and it could be able to be seen as the primary goal
of the staff of organization and not only the technicians

As safely equipment and instructions were always put in place & made available at strategic
within the company

Neatness was also a key attribute as even though the job is usually as a dirty job, technicians
were always admonished to be as neat as possible in their dressing while carrying out their
duties.

Communication played a vital role in the successful execution of jobs for among personal to
departments communicating with other departments present in the company. Good flow of
information was required and as a result most jobs that was turned or problematic, come about as
a result of poor communication between parties.

CONTRIBUTIONS

My contribution was shown on my work and services as an electrical technician in the

establishment which was basically repair and installation in the section or company. I was able to
maximize the job efficiency and work output in my section, because after a couple of weeks or
days, my supervisor gave me the access to work directly with the work done output including the
material used.

RECOMMENDATION
I use means to make the following recommendation concerning the training of student in
industrial attachment

 I would like to recommend that the engineering curriculum in the institute be adjusted
such as would provide going for industrial attachment for a longer period exceeding 3
months as opposed to three months duration to be reduced.
 Allowance should be paid to students during their programme. This would help them a
great deal to handle some financial problems during their training course since many
students commute .

CONCLUSION
My 3 months industrial attachment as a junior technician at MASINDE MULIRO
UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHOLOGY Organization was a huge success and a
great time of acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Through my training I was able to appreciate chosen course of study even more because I had
the opportunity to blend the theoretically knowledge acquired from school with the practical
hands on application of knowledge gained here to perform very important tasks that contributed
in a way to my productivity in the company. My training here has given me a broader view to the
importance and relevant of electrical engineering in the immediate society and the world at large.

As I now look forward to impacting it positively after graduation. I have also been able to
improve my communication and presentation skills and thereby developed good relationship
with my fellow colleagues at work

I have also to appreciate the connection between my course of study and other displaces in
producing a successful.
