INTRODUCTION
Coffee has a long and fascinating history that dates back hundreds of years. It is
believed to have been discovered in Ethiopia, where legend says a goat herder named Kaldi
noticed his goats becoming energetic after eating red berries from a certain tree. Curious, he
tried the berries himself and felt a boost of energy. This discovery eventually spread to nearby
regions.
By the 15th century, coffee was cultivated in Yemen and became a popular drink in the
Arabian Peninsula. It was often consumed during religious gatherings to help people stay
awake for prayers. From there, coffee spread to the Ottoman Empire and other parts of the
Middle East, where coffeehouses became social hubs for sharing ideas and stories.
In the 17th century, coffee reached Europe and quickly gained popularity. It became a
symbol of energy and productivity, and coffeehouses played an important role in modern
society. As the demand for coffee grew, European colonial powers began establishing
plantations in the tropics, particularly in the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia,
further fueling the global coffee trade and shaping the economies of these regions for
centuries to come.
Nowadays, we can see that coffee become one of the most common beverages to be
consumed whether iced, hot, with milk or infused with other flavours. As a fact, The
International Coffee Organization (ICO) estimated that coffee lovers worldwide consume
about 2.25 billion cups of coffee a day in 2023.
From its humble beginnings as a simple berry discovered in Ethiopia to its role as a
global commodity and cultural icon, coffee’s journey is a testament to its enduring allure. It is
not just a drink, but it is a symbol of energy, creativity and connection that continues to
inspire people across the globe.
Students will embark on an exciting journey to learn about different types of coffee,
such as espresso, latte, cappuccino and mocha while understanding the techniques and flavors
that make each unique. Teachers will provide clear and detailed explanations, ensuring
students grasp the fundamentals of coffee preparation. To bring this knowledge to life,
students will engage in a fun, hands-on activity by creating their own Dalgona coffee. This
session combines theory and practice, leaving students with both a deeper appreciation for
coffee culture and the joy of making their own delicious beverage.
