Travel
Why do people travel?
People usually travel to get from one place to another. There can be different reasons1 to travel:
People travel to go shopping, to commute 2to school/work, to go on business trip, to go to a
different country to learn a new language or study there, or to go on holiday in summer.
Some people like to organize their travel, because it is a lot of fun to plan everything.
You can choose your accomodation (hotel with half-pansion3, campsite4, self-catering5
accomodation)
Those people, who don´t want to organize their travel, they can use the help of different travel
agencies, who can give them brochures or links, from which they can choose the hotel they like the
most.
People travel on LAND, in AIR or on WATER.
WATER TRANSPORT - Many people choose this, because it is cheap and you can take as much
luggage as you want. If you travel for a short distance6, you can travel by a BOAT or by a FERRY7, but
it can be problematic if the weather is bad, or if there is a big storm, because you can get SEA-SICK.
On the other hand if you travel for a long distance people like to choose cruise liners8, because they
are more comfortable, and you can find cinemas, swimming pools, bars, restaurants, theatres on it.
Water transport is also important for TRANSPORTING CARGO9. We can see a lot of CARGO
VESSELS(teherszállító hajók) on the rivers, seas and oceans.
AIR TRANPORT - It is the fastest and the safest way of travelling, but of course, it is also the most
expensive. You have to BOOK YOUR TICKET/BOARDING PASS long before the day of DEPARTURE10.
Many people nowadays buy the tickets online. You should arrive to the airport minimum 2 hours
before the DEPARTURE. You do the check-in, where you give your luggage and your passport. Then
you go through the SECURITY GATES, the CUSTOMS and then you can BOARD the plane. Your ticket
also shows the number of your seat. During the flight the FLIGHT ATTENDANTS serve FOOD and
DRINK for the PASSENGERS, and you can call them, if you have any problem. Airlines have 3 classes:
FIRST CLASS = the most expensive, but also the most comfortable. BUSINESS CLASS=high quality seats
for business people. ECONOMY CLASS = the cheapest, mainly for tourists.
Planes can sometimes be DELAYED, which can be very uncomfortable if you travel somewhere on
time.
LAND TRANSPORT - This way of transport offers a variety of choices. You can travel on the road (bike,
motorbike, bus, car, truck....etc.) or on a railway 11(tram, train, underground, subway...).
Travelling by car is very popular. You are free to go wherever you want. Before you can drive a car,
you must pass the driving test and get a driving license. The petrol (=üzemanyag) is expensive, but
there are many gas stations, where you can fill your car with petrol, and have some food and drink. If
you feel tired after long hours of driving, you can stay in motels by the road. In SK we drive on the
right, but in GB people drive on the left.
Some cars look like “moving houses”. They are called CARAVANS. There is place for sleeping, a small
kitchen and bathroom.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT ON LAND - In big cities many people use buses, trams(tremsz=villamosok) or
trains to travel. They are cheaper but not so comfortable. You must buy the ticket to travel by bus,
tram or train.
Travelling by train: We have to go to the train station, buy the ticket at the ticket office12 (or online),
find the platform13, and then go into the train. The train has many carriages14, so if we can´t find
empty seat in one carriage, we must go to another one. We show our ticket to the CONDUCTOR15,
who checks if it is valid16. Some trains have a buffet car, or carriages with beds.
In som bigger cities people can travel by the underground, which is a train going under the ground. It
is fast, and it goes in every 5 minutes.
In Bratislava you can use buses, trams, trolley-buses, but there is no underground.
The huge number of cars, buses, trucks and motorbikes can pollute the air, which is bad for the
environment. That´s why some people prefer walking or use a scooter or bike for travelling.
Travelling in the past - People in the past travelled on foot, by boats or on horses. Some rich people
had wagons17, which were pulled by horses.
TITANIC - it crashed into an ice-berg, many people died. It never got into New York.

Today many students travel abroad for work: babysitting, au-pair. In this case sometimes they need to
have a VISA18.
