TAG AP/IB ENGLISH IV: SENIOR SCRAPBOOK Goals: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Develop unique voice and style.
Control tone through diction. Collect and organize information in an orderly and thematically developed manner. Extend and elaborate, using both concrete detail and commentary. Exhibit mastery of the techniques and conventions of written English in a polished and practiced manner. Create a product incorporating design, color, visuals, and text in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
Assessment: Scrapbooks will be checked at the four ISP checkpoints throughout the year. Students should have their scrapbook proposal at checkpoint 1, and four layouts for checkpoints 2, 3, and 4. Checkpoints will count as a daily grade in the six weeks they are assessed. The final product will be scored on a teacher created rubric and will count as the spring semester exam grade. Presentation of the scrapbook will be part of the overall grade. Additionally, following directions will be one important criterion for assessment. Instructions: 1. Create a thematic idea or motif that can be developed into a theme. Plan two dozen developed extensions of this motif or theme which can be used for the entries of the book. 2. Collect artifacts and assemble the required number of dated, titled entries for each checkpoint. An entry consists of varied, thematically related mementoes accompanied by a 100-word paragraph of reflection on the entry idea. Entries may be single or double page spreads and must be bound in a single-volume scrapbook or photo album of an approved size. Mementoes You will have freedom in selecting mementoes for inclusion, but remember the rhetorical triangle: your audience will include your teacher, other students, your family, and your future self. Memento ideas: photographs, ticket stubs, newspaper clippings, receipts, letters, programs, etc. Include a title (place in an appropriate location) for each entry; be creative with titles; dont merely label. Paragraphs Write at least 100 words to accompany each entry. Enter the word count for your paragraph (minimum of 100 words) on a sticky note attached to each entry. Write paragraphs legibly in ink or use your computer. You may want to include at least a few paragraphs in your handwriting for posteritys sake. Include concrete details (names, dates, places, times, facts and figures) not identified in captions and focus on commentary (personal feelings, analysis, opinions, interpretations, insights, connections, epiphanies, realizations, recognition of milestone events, quotations, etc.). The ratio of commentary to concrete details should be at least 2: 1, though good reflective writing immerses the reader in the event through vivid sensory detail and interesting description. Enhance commentary and concrete detail through well-chosen diction and imaginative imagery appealing to the senses. When possible, make connections with the literature we are reading. 5. Organization and assembly Organize your scrapbook as you wish, but you must have a unifying theme. An obvious possibility is chronological order, but even then a unique slant should be added for creativity to render a thematic element or motif. You may choose other methods of organization such as order of importance, but again top scores come from unique, imaginative approaches. Include a typed table of contents that is updated for each scrapbook submission In addition to the fifteen scrapbook entries, you will design a cover page for the scrapbook. Include your name, the school year, and a timeless quotation. This quotation may be a statement of the scrapbooks theme, a sort of motto for you, a summation of your year, a description of yourself, a projection for the future, etc. Document the quotation. Decorate the page appropriately. This page should be completed after all other pages have been assembled. Total number of pages = 16 6. Due dates: Follow the checkpoint schedule for the ISP. Your final scrapbook is due on the day of your presentation. Do not forget to pick up your scrapbook from me during the final exam time. After all, the scrapbook is for you!
