INTRODUCTION
‘Education’ and ‘Library’ are two individual concepts
fundamentally related to and co-existent with each other.
Library education means educating students to be qualified
librarians or information scientists through organized
instruction and training. A library is a collection of resources
in a variety of formats that is organized by information
professionals or other experts who provide convenient
physical, digital, bibliographic, or intellectual access and
program with the mission of educating, informing or
entertaining a variety of audience and the goral of stimulating
individual learning and advancing society.
The five laws of library science are a theory that S. R.
Ranganathan proposed in 1931, detailing the principles of
operating a library system. Many librarians from around the
world accept the laws as the foundations of their philosophy.
These laws, as presented in Ranganathan's The Five Laws of
Library Science, are:
1. Books are for use.
2. Every person has his or her book.
3. Every book has its reader.
4. Save the time of the reader.
5. A library is a growing organism.
2
Rationale of the Library
An internship is a pre-professional work experience that
provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity
to gain experience in a particular career field. Fresh
graduates of any professional discipline are not ready to
work productively until they receive training.
Here is describe several common characteristics of internship
including: -
Duration of anywhere from a month to two years, but a
typical experience usually from three to six months.
Generally, a one-time experience. May be part-time or
full-time.
May be paid or non-paid.
Internship may be part of an educational program and
carefully mentioned and evaluated for academic credit,
or internship may be part of a learning plan that
someone developed individually.
Learning activities common to most internships include
learning objectives, observation, reflection, evaluation
and assessment.
3
Objective of the Library
The main objective of the study is to earn practical
knowledge about the system and services of St. Xavier
College, Central Library. These objectives may further be
clarified as follows:
To assess the existing condition of library resources and
services.
To explore the procedure in practice for the acquisition
of library materials with special reference to books and
journals.
To understand the process methods used int terms of
processing library reading materials.
To examine the existing condition of the reading room
facilities and carrel service.
To evaluate the efficiency of the new library website.
To investigate the existing condition of the library stack
area.
To realize the rich manuscripts collection of the library.

Scope of the study
This study constitution the experience and observations of
the candidate earned during the 30 days (about 4 and a half
weeks) working day in the different section of the central
Library of St. Xavier College from Feb 20 to April 1, 2023, as
required for the partial fulfillment of the librarians of the St.
Xavier College.
The study basically covers the four main sections are:
1. Acquisition Section
2. Classification Section
3. Processing Section
4. Reference Section
Besides these are the study also covers the other section:

1. Acquisition Section:
The acquisition section is responsible for the selection and
purchase of materials or resources. It is the section which
manages the budget utilization for purchase of resources.
Recommended book lists are submitted by each department
which undergoes duplicate checking against Library holdings;
which are then placed in the meeting of Standing Committee
for book Selection. A supply order is placed for procurement
of the approved books. Books once received are accessioned
and entered the system by this section which is then
transferred to Technical Section for technical processing.

2.Classification Section: -
A library classification is a system of organization of
knowledge by which library resources are arranged and
ordered systematically. Library classifications are a notational
system that represents the order of topics in the classification
and allows items to be stored in that order.
Some of the popular classification systems are the Library of
Congress Classification (LCC), the Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) the Bliss Bibliographic Classification
(BC), the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), Cutter
Expansive Classification, and the Colon Classification (CC);
DDC and LCC being the most popular ones. DDC is the most
widely used classification system throughout the world.

BLIS aims to produce professionals who can be appointed in
libraries and information centers in junior and middle level
positions. With time and after gaining experience they move
further up in position. They can also be self-employed
providing information-based services and products, even
open their own start-ups. Students can be introduced and
exposed to work culture, routines, and practices by placing
them as interns in different working environments. The
internship has also been stressed in the courses. It also leads
us to have a component of practical in all the courses. The
internship will expose the students to translating their
learning into work/job and consolidate their practical
learning in the LIS /school by doing it during an internship for
providing services and designing information products. It is
necessary to introduce the students to the concept and need
for an internship. A short theoretical course/module needs to
be introduced as part of the curriculum for the student to
understand the internship. To bring home the seriousness of
its students should be evaluated for this short
course/module. Internship performs the activities as given in
the workbook for a minimum of 5hours a day, five days a
week, for a period of 1 month, excluding holiday to be
worked for completing the internship. The student must
complete 100 hours (about 4 days) of training during the
internship. So, I have completed a workbook based on the
work performed during the training. Here it is: -

CONCLUSION
This internship has provided me with an excellent
opportunity as well as a great experience to improve
my limited knowledge in library and information
science.
St. Xavier College library was an experience for me.
Apart from the theoretical knowledge this college had
given huge exposure and I came to know more on
library
sections and services. I should highlight the
cooperation among all staff members.
Moreover, I should say that I got a chance to explore
this beautiful campus and for a month I was a part of
St. Xavier College library. I can’t conclude without
thanking Ramesh Kumar sir for such a great
opportunity.
