The Last Breath by Sam Kahiga

We watched Eva walking firmly back to her dormitory. I glanced

sideways at Dad. He was watching her with a strange, tense look in his
eye.

1. Who is the “We” the first-person narrator is referring to?

2. Who is Eva?
3. Where does Eva live?
4. Why are the narrator and his father watching Eva?
5. Why does the narrator glance sideways at his father?
6. Why does the father have a strange, tense look in his eye?

I hesitate on the word ‘tense’, doubtful as to whether Dad was ever

tense in his life. But the look in his eye was very strange as he watched
her walk away.

7. What does the narrator mean when he says that his father had never
been ‘tense’ in his life? What does this tell us about his father?
8. Why do you think the father has this strange look in his eyes as he
watches Eva walk away?

I wondered what he was thinking. Whatever it was, it made no

difference. I loved Eva and would marry her as soon as I possibly could.

9. What is the father thinking about?

10. Why does the narrator believe that his father’s thoughts will have
no impact on him?
11. The narrator claims to love Eva. Why doesn’t he marry her now?
Why is he waiting?

Suddenly, without a word, Dad started the engine and drove furiously
down the road towards the gate of the blind school.
12. To be furious means to be extremely angry. Why is the narrator’s
father furious?
13. Eva lives in the dormitory of the blind school. What do you think
this means? Where is her family?

“What will you do? You can’t marry her like that!” he shouted above
the roar of the engine.

14. Why does the father ask the narrator, “What will you do?” What
exactly does he mean with this question?
15. Why does he tell his son he can’t marry her “like that”?
