Introduction
Today you will learn about King Sejong who was king of
Joseon. Joseon was one of period of Korea.

But unfortunately, some people in Korea use profanity and


say loanwords. For this, many people in Korea make some
posters, games and challenges to make them use Korean
correctly. For example, ‘Delicate and beautiful Korea’. Such
as this sentences, those are very effective!

He invented a lot of things that are necessary. He loved his


nation and citizens who lived there. Also, he loved meat!
That is a reason he died early. He conducted a study of
Hangul with scholars. Hangul is a language of Korea. If
there wasn’t Hangul, Korean might use language of other
countries.

Do you know how King Sejong make Hangul? He made


Hangul about surrounding life. For consonant, he made
the words with avoirdupois about pronunciation agency.
For vowel, he made avoirdupois words about life. Hangul is
really meaningful and scientific!

Childhood
He was born on May 15, 1397 and he died on March 30,
1450. He had two brothers. His father is Bangwon Lee
and Mother is Wonkeyeong Min. He loved science. Also
he loved to read books. Even he was sick because he read
too many books.

He loved books so he learned many things from books. He


learned all subjects from private teachers because he was
from a royal family. Maybe his parents doesn’t want
him to study in Korean School. Studying by private
teachers will helps him more. So he didn’t go to the
Korean School.

One day, Sejong’s father “I told you stop reading books for
a while. Reading books are good, but it can hurts you.”
and Sejong said “Dad, don’t be worry about it. Reading
books make me happy.” Sejong read a book many times
because he thought reading a book in only 1 time is not
enough to understand. Sejong’s father thought Sejong is
studying very hard of his sons. He looked at him very
proudly.

But Sejong’s father was little bit hard to choose next king.
He didn’t choose first and second sons. Because first son
liked to play and second son was very sick. So he choose
third son who is Sejong. Sejong thought very thank you to
4 his family.
It was the first day that he become a king. He collected all
the genius in Joseon. He thought ‘ Scholarship is so wide
and deep!’ Although he became a king, he read books
constantly, and conducted a study with scholars.

He was young, but he controlled his country very well. He


didn’t only care about him, he took care of his nation more
and citizens. He controlled his country for 32 years!

It is the result of the king to read many books and study


hard since he was young.

Adulthood
When he became 30 years old, he brought a youth named
Yeongsil Jang. He was good at dexterity since childhood.
So King Sejong thought he’ll helps him. Yeongsil’s
status was very low. But he invented many things so
King Sejong made Yeongsil’s status high. They made a
lot of things. But the most important things are Korean
sundial, Korean surveyor, Korean water clock and
Korean seeing stars machine. Also measuring movement
and position machine.

What is the Korean Sundial? We call it Angbuilgu.


Angbuilgu is an old Joseon clock that can tell the time by
the sun. You know that science didn’t develop in the
past,right? So Korean could what time was.

What is the Korean Surveyor? We call it Ceukugi.


Ceukugi is a mechanism to measure how much rain has
come. It also used long time ago.

What is the Korean Water Clock? We call it Jageukru.


Jageukru is a water clock that automatically tells you the
time. And what are Korean Seeing Stars Machine and
measuring movement and position machine?
Korean seeing stars machine is Guancheondae.
Guancheondae is a machine that observes stars in the sky.
Also sun and moon. And measuring movement and
position machine is Honcheoneu. Honcheoneu is to measure
6 the movement and position of the celestial bodies.
These all things are important, but more important thing is
Hangul!

Before he started to make Hangul, they used Chinese.


Chinese were hard to learn even some people don’t know how
to write. Many people didn’t know how to write, so they had
a lot of unfair things.

One day, King Sejong ask to prince, “Can you make a


bird cry?” The prince started to imitating.
“Tweet,tweet,chatter,chatter” King Sejong asked again.
“Can you write it?” The prince answered. “I can’t write it
because Chinese is mean something.” Since then, King
Sejong stayed up all night studying the shapes of letters.
So he became very sick. But he didn’t care of him self
because he thought he should make Korean as soon as
possible. And Hangul was made. He succeeded to make
Hangul.

Accomplishments
Jong-moo Lee led 22 military ships to the Japanese
invasion of Daemado, and in 1419, King Sejong’s first
year of King Sejong’s reign, he ordered Daemado Island
to be subjugated to Gyeongsang-do.

The death penalty shall be the “Three times Psychological


Law” so the no one dies unjustly.

He set up a custom made temple (the government office


responsible for music) to arrange the royal music, ‘Aak’
to Parkyeon. They encouraged music by compiling sheet
music of Aak.

What is saga reading? The system of recruiting young


tattoos to foster talented human resources and giving
them leave to concentrate on reading.

King Sejong recognized Kwannobi as a “people” and


increased maternity leave by setting a low on her
maternity leave.

Completion of 36 volumes of Taejong’g silk (history of


Taejong period) under the supervision of Hwanghee.

It is a book made by gathering the deeds of loyalists Hyoja,
and enamored women who will be good examples in the
Samgang of the military, the rich, the couple in the
Chinese books.

In 1434, King Sejong ordered Icheon, Yeongsil Jang, and


others to make a sheet of metal for printing letters. It’s
bigger and looks better than the previous type. It’s name is
‘Gabinja’.

Hunminjungeum was share and


Hunminjungeumheryebon was completed.

He was sick, but he always like to read books and he loved


citizens.

How could a king who should rule over all people and all
things in the country with impartiality treat those of low
birth any differently form the way he treats other?”

“Unlike many other occupations,scholars have the greatest


responsibility to the people. Their work can ultimately
improve the lives of all people for many decades. But if an
academic becomes lost in his study, he cannot see how his
work can benefit others. Therefore, like a well-balanced
fencing stance, or a reasonable argument, the scholar’s life
must be even and balanced.”

Conclusion
In conclusion, King Sejong was a great person in history.
Even some people in other country know him!!! He is so
famous!

On October 9th is Hangul Day. It is a day to publicize the


excellence of Hangul and celebrate King Sejong’s
proclamation of Hunminjeongeum.

In Seoul which is city of Korea, there is a statue of King


Sejong. In front of this statue, there is sundial,
measuring movement and position machine...etc. Many
people take pictures and respect him.

He died early because he had diabetes, and veneral


diseases. He didn’t care his body because he was very busy
to study.

He was a great King of Joseon! Let’s respect him!!!
