 INSTRUCTIONS
The Stitches

Written in US term

magic ring inc – increase

ch – chain dec – decrease
sl st – slip stitch yo – yarn over
sc – single crochet sk – skip one stitch
dc – double crochet bst – bead stitch

Special Stitches:
Bead Stitch – (See photo tutorial below under the blanket pattern) Insert
hook behind the previous dc from front to back, pull through a long loop (2
loops on hook), yo (3 loops on hook), insert the hook again behind the same
dc from front to back and pull another loop (4 loops on hook), yo and pull
through all 4 loops.

Gauge

Keep the tension relaxed, if your work is too tight, the ends will curl. Use one
size up hook to make the foundation chain.

Using the yarn weight and hook size suggested in this pattern will
create a blanket size 100cm by 80cm (39.5in by 31.5in).

Gauge for a 10cm by 10cm (3.9in by 3.9in) area is 5 rows by 8 stitches.

 This beautiful 3 in 1 baby blanket acts as a toy, a blanket and a
decoration for your loved one's room. Unfold it and keep your child warm
and snuggly while he is entertained playing with the unicorn. Once done,
fold it back and it instantly transforms into a decorative item that you can
rest on the arm chair or the side of the cot.

Made with chunky / bulky yarn, this blanket is warm and soft and
perfect for the cold months ahead. The natural neutral colors are suitable for
both girls and boys and will fit with any color scheme you might have.
Crochet the mane and tail in the color of your choice to suit your decor and
taste.

This pattern will create a baby blanket size 100cm by 80cm (46in by
31in), but you can make yours as small or as large as you like by changing the
number of the starting chains and the number of rows.

Depending how big you choose the blanket to be, there are 2 different
techniques of folding it: the gate fold technique and the tri fold technique.
For this size of blanket, I used the gate fold Technique explained in detail at
the end.

1. For small to medium blankets such as pram blankets you should

choose the gate fold technique

2. for larger blankets such as baby blankets use the tri fold technique

Supplies Used For This Pattern

 9 x 100g balls of chunky (bulky) yarn in white for the blanket and head
 part (less than half) of a 100g ball of dk yarn (light worsted yarn) in
white for ears and legs
 part (less than half) of a 100g ball of dk yarn (light worsted yarn) in
grey for the horn and legs
 various colors (a few yards) for the mane, tail and flowers (I used
leftover multicolor and sparkle yarn from my previous projects, but you
can use any colour you wish and fits your needs and decor)
 polyfill stuffing
 crochet hooks sizes 6.5mm, 6mm, 4mm and 3mm
 blunt sewing needle to fit the yarn used to stitch the parts together
 1.2mm black doll safety eyes
 scissors

The Pattern
The blanket is made out of 7 different patterns:

- 1 x blanket
- 1 x head
- 2 x ears
- 4 x legs
- 1 x horn
- 3 flowers
- 18 curly strings (10 for the mane and 8 for the tail)
- 3 buttons

The Blanket

The blanket is crocheted with bulky yarn and consists of alternating

rows of double crochet stitches and bead stitches.

The pattern requires an even number of chains plus 3 chains that count
as the first double crochet stitch (in this case I made 70 chains + 3 chains).

If you are a tight crocheter, use a larger hook size to make the foundation
chain (in this case I used a 6.5mm hook for the initial chains, then a 6mm
hook to complete the blanket).

How to crochet the Bead Stitch

The bead stitch is crocheted around the previous double crochet post.
Because I used bulky yarn, 2 loops were enough to create it, if you are using
a lighter yarn weight, you might want to pull 4 loops through.

Start by making a double crochet stitch. Insert hook behind it from front to
back, pull through a long loop (2 loops on hook), yo (3 loops on hook), insert
the hook again behind the same dc from front to back and pull another loop
(4 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 4 loops.

Making the blanket

With bulky white yarn and a 6.5mm hook, chain 73. Change the hook to a
6mm one and continue with row 1

Row 1: dc in 5th chain and in each chain across, turn

Row 2, 3 & 4: ch3 (acts as a dc), dc in the next stitches across, turn

Row 41,42,43 & 44: ch3 (acts as a dc), dc in the next stitches across, fasten
off and weave ends.

To make it easier, here is the sequence of rows made: 4 dc rows, 1 bst row, 3
dc rows, 1 bst row, 5dc rows, 1 bst row, 3 dc rows, 1 bst row, 5dc rows, 1 bst
row, 3 dc rows, 1 bst row, 5dc rows, 1 bst row, 3 dc rows, 1 bst row, 4dc rows

The Head

Work in a continuous round using a stitch marker to mark the

beginning of the round. I used a smaller hook size for a tighter work, if you
are using a larger hook than mine, the head will be slightly larger.

With bulky white and a 4mm hook, create a magic ring

Round 1: 5sc into the magic ring = 5

Round 2: inc in each stitch = 10
Round 3: *inc, sc*, repeat until end of row = 15
Round 4: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until end of row = 20
Rounds 5, 6 & 7: sc in each ch = 20
Round 8: *inc, 3sc* , repeat until end of row = 25
Round 9: *inc, 4sc* , repeat until end of row = 30
Round 10: *inc, 5sc* , repeat until end of row = 35
Round 11: *inc, 6sc* , repeat until end of row = 40

Rounds 12, 13 & 14: sc in each ch = 40

Place the eyes between the 8th and 9th row, 10 stitches apart

Start filling the head with polyfil stuffing. Continue filling as you work up the
rounds.

Round 15: *dec, 6sc* , repeat until end of row = 35

Round 16: *dec, 5sc* , repeat until end of row = 30
Round 17: *dec, 4sc* , repeat until end of row = 25
Round 18: *dec, 3sc* , repeat until end of row = 20
Round 19: *dec, 2sc* , repeat until end of row = 15

Finish off and sew up to close then weave in ends.

The Ears

Make two in dk yarn white. Work in the round, without turning or closing
the round. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

With a 3mm hook create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6sc in the magic ring = 6

Round 2: sc in each chain = 6

Change colors to dk yarn in white

Round 10: sc in each chain = 25

The Mane and Tail

I used leftover multicolor yarn from previous projects. Feel free to use
any dk yarn you wish. I made 9 pieces for the tail and 9 for the mane.

Row 1: with a 3mm hook chain 54

Row 2: sl st in 2nd from hook and in following 2 chains, inc (2sc in same
chain) in each remaining chain, fasten off and weave in ends.

The Flowers

I used leftover glitter yarn, feel free to use any dk yarn you wish. Make 3: 2
in purple and 1 in pink, work in the round without turning

With a 3mm hook make a magic ring

Round 1: 5sc, pull close the magic ring and sl st in the first sc
Round 2: *ch2,sc*, repeat ** around, sl st in the first ch
Round 3: make the 5 petals - *sc, ch1, 3dc, ch1,sc * in each of the 5 ch2
spaces created in round 2, fasten off and eave in ends.

The Buttons

Putting The Blanket Together

With gray yarn, sew on the horn to the head between rows 10 and 12,
above the eyes.

Sew on the nostrils and mouth with gray yarn.

Sew on the ears on either side of the horn with white yarn.

To join the mane:

Row 1: sc in 5 of the curly strings, turn

Row 2: ch 1,sc in each stitch, turn

Row 3: ch 1, sc through next stitch and a curly string, sc in following stitch
and a second curly string, continue until you joined all 5 curly strings, fasten
off and leave a long tail.

Sew the mane to the head, starting from the back base of the horn.

This is how the end result should look like

Sew on the flowers at the base of the horn

Tie the buttons on one side of the blanket, one in each of the two corners
and one in the middle equally spaced between the two.

Using the gate fold technique shown at the beginning, fold the blanket
lengthwise then using the tri fold technique, fold the blanket widthwise. You
will end with a square.

Mark the corners with a safety pin or a piece or yarn, unfold the
blanket and sew on the legs. Make sure the front legs are sewn at the edge
of the blanket as you see in the photo below

Now sew the head between the front legs, right in the middle

To join the tail, first run string through all 8 curly strings and tie a knot,
then use the rest of the yarn to sew it between the back legs, adjacent to
the head.

How To Fold Your Blanket

Step 1: lay the blanket with the wrong side up

Step 2: fold each side up the the center

Step 3: tie up the buttons by sliding them through the stitches on the
opposite side.

Step 4: divide the length of the blanket in three imaginary parts and fold the
end of the blanket (the one that doesn't have the head) like in the picture
below

Step 4: fold the blanket again in half as in the picture

Step 5: fold the blanket in half once more

Once folded you can rest it on the side of the sofa, cot, armchair etc, or roll it
inwards and rest it anywhere you like.
